Karla (2006,  R)
Karla
Like many films of true crimes and murders there is a tendency for them to be overtly analyzed when the full details are not quite certain of e.g. When events are acted in a assumed manner without direct commentary, all with a touch of artist license for dramatic or chilling effect.

However Karla falls into another pit full of these films an uneasy depiction of the killer appearing as a victim. Whether intention or not I couldn't work out, its possible that in trying to show the very complex nature of Karla Homolka and her destructive and abusive relationship with Paul Bernado, they inadvertantly overlooked a few issues and figured the "character" would be liked more.

Laura Prepon stars as Karla, young beautiful and blonde woman who falls for Paul (Misha Collins) an egotistic, masogonistic, serial womaniser and rapist (all unknown to karla). the two quickly enter a troubled relationship of kinky, violent sex, jealose rows over paul's obsession with Karla's younger sister Tammy. Which leads to Karla offering her sister to Paul after drugging her 2 days before X-mas, the two then film themselves sexually assaulting Tammy but she chokes on her vomit due to the drugging and dies. Karla and Paul freak call and ambulance with a hastily made up story about Tammy being drunk and they get away with it. But Paul liked it so much that in the following years he proceeds to kidnap, abused film, raped, brutalize, beat and kill more teenage girls all with Karla's willing participation.

The film shows that very abusive relationship between karla and paul, and no doubt she was a beaten spouse, her mind was affected and she willingly admitted that she would do anything to please him and keep him. but this film doesn't balance that with the troubles that plague the courts: the evidence of video's showing karla without fear or intimidation abusing many of the victims including her own kid sister, and also that she helped to kidnap the girls and was fully aware in later years of paul's serial rapist behavour and failed to prevent further attacks.

Prepon and Collins are greats as leads, she provides the beauty, vunverbility and little bit of sass that the role calls for but with a sterness and clearity to the acting that provises a great performance and Collins is superbe as Paul Bernardo, twisted, Pyschotic highly abusive, manipulative and extremely charming and easy to eleviate peoples fears.

The couple were called the Ken and Barbie Murderers, a young good looking sweet couple next door. but behind closed doors there was a whole horrid world. This is their story and serves as a fairly good movie on the real life case of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.

The real couple its based on:

The Condemned (2007,  R)
The Condemned
Although not an untirely well delivered movie, it has some really great aspects and cool fights and explosions.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

10 will fight.....9 will die....You will watch. Yes that is the plot. 10 criminals all sentanced to death are bought by a milllionaire, dropped on an island and given 30 hrs to kill each other for the prize of being the sole survivor they get salvation. All the convicts are brutal killers and/or rapists, except Jack Conrad (Steve Austin) a specail forces guy left to rot by his government in a Central American prision after being captured on an op.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Yeah well naturally not all the crims wanna kill, so cue the C4 strapped to their ankles with taper proof cuffs and a 30 hr count down. And pretty soon its an all out killing feast......Oh and did mention Mr Rich is broadcasting it all live on his internet show. Cue the last survivor.

Austin is good, bit wooden acting wise but decent fights. Vinnie Jones is Fantastic as the bad Motherf*cker Criminal with a crossbow. Good concepts and general action style worth a gander.

The Reaping
"You wanna talk plagues, lets talk plagues. In 1400BC a group of nervous Egyptians saw the Nile turn red. But what they though was blood, was actually an algae bloom, which killed the fish which prior to that had been living off the eggs of frogs. Those uneaten eggs turned into record numbers of baby frogs who subsequently fled to the land and died. Their little rotting frog bodies attracted lice and flies, the lice carried the Blue Tongue Virus, which killed 70% of Egyptians livestock. The flies carried Glanders, a bacterial infection which in humans causes boils. Soon after that the Nile river valley was hit by a 3 day sandstorm, also know as the Plague of darkness. During the sandstorm intense heat combine with an approaching cold front created not only hail but electrical storms, which to Egyptians would look like fire from the sky. The subsequent wind would have blown the Ethiopian locust population off course and right into down town Cairo. Hail is wet, Locust leave droppings, spread both on your grain and you've got mycotoxins. Dinner time in ancient Egypt meant the first born child got the biggest portion, which in this case meant he eat the most toxins, which meant he died. 10 Plagues 10 scientific Explanations".

To be entirely honest this review is causing considerable pain to write and not just due to the bruising from my canular. I just don't see the point of horrors anymore as a viable aspect of films, and why would I when dull predictable barely thrilling or scary films like this are dealt out in the way Prozac is at Girls Aloud concerts.

The concept had potential as most decent horrors usually do. And lets face it what can be more scary than the concept of blind faith, biblical plagues, hick towns and a slightly feral/disturb/supernatural child. But once again its the undertaking of the performing and applications of the story that is highly lacking. Poorly executed character stories, dull acting from most, lack of passion and enthusiasm of the story and underdeveloped plot lines and subject matter.

The story is Hilary Swank and Iris Elba play biblical miracle and religious phenomena investigators and with scientific application basically debunk the crying statue of virgin mary or the restoration of sight to the local blind man after kissing the forehead of the dead priest. Katherine (Swank) is an ex-missionary who lost her faith after her family were slaughtered in a religious offering. Elba's character is a highly religious man after surviving over 12 gunshots to his body. The dynamic of this team and their work is truelly put to the test when called to a small Louisiana town after the rivers run read. The manifestation of the 10 biblical plagues being to appear all after the appearance of the strange young girl (Annasophia Robb) outcast by the locals to the woods off the river. Soon Katherine begins to realize that science has no power to explain, that maybe her faith is needed if she is to save the town, the girl, her friend and herself.

I started to realize that the flash backs, bible bashing and strange connection to a priest made little sense, the story fluttered about too much around the center theme without much reason or explanation. the ending was just packed with too much "stuff" (for lack of a better word). It was as if they just kept throwing ideas in regardless if they connected to the story or not. Like I know we'll make the young girl the incarnation of Katherine's dead daughter, or lets have them find a crypt full of dead children, or a strange cross/ pirate hook symbol carved on crap or have the creepy girl as part of a sick family cult religious thingy where they tortured her and think shes the Antichrist. There were just too many incoherent thoughts and ideas most of which were just irrelevant, and the ending scooted by very fast after a slow build up of story. In a nutshell it was all a little anticlimactic.

Fairly decent acting from Swank, no surprise and good performances from David Morrissey, Annasophia Robb and Idris Elba.

I've seen scarier things at the local farm like that two headed goat ARGH, and more suspense watching a blonde try to figure out a ticket machine at the train station. The thrill level though is pretty matched to that time the police chased that shoplifter and it was touch and go as to whether they had the juristicion to arrest him in case it breached his human rights.

WARNING!!!!! Those with Heart conditions and/or weak stomachs AVOID!!!! As I have neither I went, I saw and I loved!

Yeah the plot was all too similar to countless other horror films. A loved up 20 something, couple go on a road trip for summer fun on springbreak. They get roped into giving a hitch-hiker a lift, even though he's one creepy freak. The guy attacks them but their able to escape, but inturn majorly Piss him off and then the fun crazed murder spree and deadly car chases ensue!

I'm sucker for horror's where by the "Evil" is in the form of human brutality and killing for no better reason than its fun and feels good. And this had it all in the form of the chillingly terrifying John Ryder. A relentless cold hearted murder who enjoys killing innocent families who he cons into giving a lift.

Sean Bean is excellent even with the slightly poor american accent, bringing the correct amount of menicing charm and pyschotic pather-esque stalker slayer action. Knighton and Bush are excellent as the young couple or the prey. And excellent casting of Neal McDonough as the Police Lieutenant trying to figure out why all these people are turning up dead.

Now i have a really strong resolve and there isn't much gore/blood wise that makes me grimice but a few parts did. the violence is brutal extreme and in your face. The jump factor is also on high, i nearly had a coranary when a car crashes in front of a girl after it flies of the cliff from above as the scene was so serene and peacefull before hand.

SO finally Want to be scared, get the heart and adrenaline pumping, brutal violence, breathtaking car chases or maybe just get some very creative methods and ideas for your own killing spree then this is the movie for you. But don't get popcorn it'll end up on your lap or the floor!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sorry I was laughing at this because the makers obviously intended it to be a joke

*whispering from movie elders*

WHAT this was supposed to be a serious movie?? Oh gosh darning hell, they managed to hit the comedy genre too without even trying, Well freaking done!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Based on the true story of the Broderick Family and their campaign of terror on their Ranch of Hoboken Hollow. This bunch of hill-billy interbred nut jobs have been luring unsuspecting vagrants and hitch hikers to the ranch with the promise of food and shelter in turn for a few days work. However once they are there they refuse to let them leave, keeping them shackled, over worked, underfeed, scared, beaten, psychologically and physically abused and even turning those who rebel into JERKY!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The film centers around the 5 young men, their efforts to survive the ranch and the interests of local oil Tycoon J.T Goldman (Michael Madsen). See Goldman is desperately trying to buy out Mother Broderick who owns a Shop, Cedar Wood Stock and the Ranch on Hoboken Hollow. She refuses to sell so he starts snooping for the skeleton in the closest that will force the sell. And the skeleton happens to become many (in the well not the closet), and the scandal becomes wide as the local sheriff (Dennis Hopper) Is Mother's Cousin and is actually PROVIDING poor souls for the ranch slavery.

Although based on true events and has some potential to be an "ok" movie, I can't rate this well. A 1 star was greatly generous. It starts out like a Mockumentry rather than a film, like a type of dramatized reconstruction for the crime channel type shows, before cascading into chaotic torture and drug allured kinetics. The story flitters between trying to get in facts chronologically and systematically. but sadly descends mostly into an incoherent choppy confusing parody of killing, escape and poor story telling. Whether this is because the facts of the actual cases aren't know that well and they just tried to make a film with the very little know events and surmised the in between parts. Or possibly they just made a shit film.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Either way its a real shame because true stories are great material, if left alone and NOT glorified/sexed up. The story almost runs along the lines of a real life The Hills Have Eyes but without the "mutant/Savagery" aspect and is basically the Texan version of Wolf creek. The problem is with both this and Wolf Creek, that they focus too heavily on the Gore and shock value and put the Story on the back burner. There is no substance within the basic idea, yeah we're shown the main players and the important aspects of events and Problems but there is no "skin" on those "bones" (sorry bad pun) It like watching a 3 hour film of WWII and all they say is Hitler was a bad guy who tries to kill some people he didn't like and take over countries he had no right to rule, padding the rest out with video of bombing, battles, mass graves and concentration camp images but not explaining their meaning or significance.

Constantine (2005,  R)
Constantine
An excellent example of how to do a supernatural horror full of religious mythology and references, as well as some fantastic special effects and mighty fine actors.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Plot summary: John Constantine can see half breeds angels and demons. plagued by these visions he committed suicide, but failed however after sent back from the dead he polices the half breeds. any one that breaks the rules and interferes with humans he sends back to the other world, but only to try to ensure his entry into heaven (due to his suicide attempt) Enter Angela (Rachel Weisz) who's twin sister Isobel, who also saw things commits suicide with her final words being "Constantine". So as she tries to solve the mystery of Isobel's death and John tries to find the connection to Isobel and the increase in demon possessions they fly head long into the plot to resurrect Mannon Or the son of Lucifer, using the Spear of Destiny.

Everything about this film speaks to sci fi and horror fans. Its not exactly hard core of course but it plays around with enough aspects of scariness to provide those thrills and suspense without being ridiculously extrovert and stupid.

I just love all the characters and actors/actresses playing them. They just pull off the parts so well.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Firstly the star attraction Mr Keanu Reeves, Playing a similar character in the matrix, very moody, brooding and badass even in a suit. He has this ability to show that utter disregard for thankfulness and sees his "word" as a means to the end and in order to secure heavenly sanctuary when he dies. And with 30 cigs a day for th also 20 years finally taking its toll you can see why he's a bit pissed that all the policing he's done for god and the humanity and still not getting any signs of reward. He seems a little wooden as there isn't much emotion acting as the role calls for the dark gloomy figure it actually makes the character a lot more deviant and destructive.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Then there is Djimon Hounsou and Shia La Beouf, whose character provide almost departed friendship, in that they help John Constantine but aren't really his friends. They provide much needed character development and light relief from the dark intenseness of the story.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Rachel Weisz great acting, and a great character but only relevant in tying the 2 veins of the story together and is crucial to the final moments of the film but beside that she just provides the essential roles of the female lead, strong beliefs which end up being reevaluated but this Constantine figure.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And Tilda Swinton is the true gem of the film and without giving away the plot of ending, if you've seen it you'll understand just how well she acts as the character of angel Gabriel. Effortless and intimidatingly brutal. Class act!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And finally the special effects, make up and the incredible action, demon attack and fighting scenes are simply fantastic in this. If you haven't seen it yet then why are you still reading this go now.

I honestly did not think I could ever see a movie that was as bad as this one even if I spent ever hour of the day for the next 50 years watching films.

The ironic thing is on the front of the DVD case it touts "From the makers of SPIDERMAN, DAREDEVIL, X-MEN and BLADE." Cos wheni see words like that is tend to think it means that the film will be at least half decent with all the suppossed great talent behind it.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It even goes as far as to state "Atmospheric. Visually stunning horror Movie" Well either that is a horrific printing mistake at the Dvd cover makers or someone was taking the piss out of not just the movie but us dumbasses for Renting/buying/watching/shredding it.

It had the potential to possible achieve that 2 1/2 star rating, had it not fallen into the trap of poor everything. Poor Characters, Poor Story developement and execution. Poor mythology. Poor bad guys (human form). Poor Hero. AND EXTREMELY POOR MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The story is that a new sheriff arrives at a small southern town after the last sheriff disappears. Other locals have too, and most been found dead and mutilated, cast as alligator attacks from the local swamp. However the reality is that oil barons digging up the swamp have disturbed the ancient malevolent native Indian monster hellbent on revenge. its seeking blood of the locals and kills by sticking tree branches through people.

Like I said Its just plain ludicrous. The monster "Man thing" It like a cross between the huge live trees from The Lord of the Rings and the Incredible hulk with a shocking case of pink eye.

Ps. The half a star is because I feel incredibly generous and not because it really deserves it.

Return to Sender (Convicted) (2005,  R)
Return to Sender (Convicted)
A fairly good crime thriller /death row drama which seems to have been over looked by many people.

Aiden Quinn is Frank Nitzche, a previosly disgraced Death row attorney who now exploits criminals by selling thier private letters to newspapers after thier deaths.. He cons death row inmates into writing to him by posing as a friend in thier time of need and ultimatley getting confessions and final letters before thier deaths. his lastest target is "Baby killer" Charlotte Cory (Connie Nielsen). Convicted of kidnapping and suspected killing of 2 year old daughter of a famous baseball start.

However when frank begins to notice inconsistances and strange connections in charlottes case, he begins to think that she is innocent ans protecting the real killer. So along with charlotte's lawyer they try to discover the real killer and save cory before her exceution.

The acing from Quinn and Nielsen is really great to watch, especially as their relationship developes and the intense situations are only furthered byt the characters. There is a good backing cast and athe story does flow quite well with only hints at dragging. There isn't spectacular plot or acting but its is good enough to watch and enjoy, with a fair amount to twist and turns to keep you entertained.

Take a chance and give it a go.
