Spoofs
It seems that almost every month we're getting a new movie that spoofs some genre of Hollywood. From "Scary Movie" to "Meet The Spartans", no movie is safe from lampooning. The problem is, most of these movies are just NOT funny. In fact some of them are so bad, they rank among the worst movies of all time. But there were many classics, and hopefully there will be more to come.

BASEketball (1998, R)
One of the most underrated comedies of all time. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are two slackers who create their own sport in their driveway, basketball with baseball rules, that quickly becomes the new national pasttime. With their teammate, Squeak "Lil Bitch" Scolari, they become national heroes in a game where cheating is the norm, and you score by grossing out your opponent. As politically incorrect as you can hope for, the laughs come fast and furious. Between the quick one liners and physical sight gags, the laughs do not stop. Not least of which are the names chosen by some of the teams....The Milwaukee Beers, The San Fransico Ferries and more. Rent or buy it now, you won't be sorry. |

Meet the Spartans (2008, PG-13)
The only positive thing I can say about this movie is that it's better than movies like Date Movie and Epic Movie. Those movies, like this one, were written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Selzer. These guys just do not get satire. In this movie, they even have to go as far as to identify the very pop culture refrences they are trying to make fun of. Why? Because the physical spoofs are not recognizable, and the celebrity look-a-likes they use don't even come close to resembling the real celebrities. The only thing they are good at showing is their love of the hip hop culture, and Carmen Electra's body. Guess what? That's not funny. Now truth to tell, I did catch myself laughing a couple of times, which is more than I can say for any of their other movies. But a couple of laughs is few and far between in an 87 minute movie. Another swing and miss for the guys that envision themselves as successors to the ZAZ team that created Airplane, Top Secret, and The Naked Gun. That concept is funnier than anything these doofs can dream of putting in any of their movies. |

Superhero Movie (2008, PG-13)
While it's not as bad as turdfests like Epic Movie and Date Movie, it also doesn't even come close to hilarity of Airplane, Naked Gun, or Top Secret. Leslie Nielsen is, as always, dependable for some good deadpan laughs. Nickelodeon's Drake Bell makes a good case for tv actors who should stay on tv. Especially ones who come from kids shows. One big lesson for movies like this, and all other pretenders to Airplane's throne...if you are doing satire, the characters in the movie can NOT be in on the joke. Every time one of the characters does the "wait...what?" double take, it ruins the joke. It's like a sign saying "Hey there was a joke there". The more clueless the characters are, the better the ridiculousness of their situation is. |
