Step back in time
Period costume films from ancient, medieval, renaissance/elizabethan/edwardian/victorian/georgian times. I enjoyed the movies and admired the lush, elaborate costumes and sets too.

Amazing Grace (2007, PG)
What an amazing historical piece! My regret was not being able to watch this earlier. This film is about the fight of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery in the early 18th Century. Ioan Gruffudd as Wilberforce is believable, complimented by an amazing casts like Albert Finney. The beautiful song Amazing Grace has long been one of my favorite songs, hearing and singing it in church during my younger years. |

The chemistry between Kidman and Law is breathtaking but watching Zellweger as the rough, feisty and loudmouthed Ruby was a real treat. She makes Kidman look like a deer caught in headlights most of the time. Also I wouldnt miss any masterpieces from Anthony Minghella who directed The English Patient and Talented Mr Ripley. He makes films in the most beautiful locations! It is a real pity that the gifted director had passed away. Anyone who enjoys watching the Civil War period/epic romance movies, would treasure this one. I find this a well crafted film from start to finish. |

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005, PG-13)
Read the book many years ago and was both excited and at the same time afraid that this beautiful story would be butchered onscreen. Rob Marshall proved me wrong. Also its funny that this film was heavily criticized for having a Malaysian and 2 Chinese actresses portraying Japanese Geishas. My favourite is Gong Li here, she deserved a recognition for her role as Hatsumomo. Lavish costumes and exquisite cinematography |

Titanic (1997, PG-13)
The Titanic. Unsinkable, it was claimed until an iceberg changed everything. I don t think I will ever get bored of this movie. When it came out in 1997, I saw it for the very 1st time, I was in awe. Still am. The cinematography and the special effects kept me riveted. It gives you the feeling of almost being there on the ship itself. A visual grandeur indeed. The 2 leads were superb, amazing chemistry. To date, my favourite scene is where L.DeCaprio and Kate Winslet flying at the ship's front. The sinking of the great ship is no secret and certain scenes were so hauntingly sad .Every creak and groan of the ship was audible when watching it on a good quality DVD. |

Action, romance, war, and passionate, intriguing drama. An epic to be reckon with.A timeless tale of the 18th century frontier and the virtue and tragedy that results when the uniquely different cultures of the French, English, Native Americans, and colonists collide. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeline Stowe were brilliant here, they delivered their roles as Hawkeye and Cora Munro. |

Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003, PG-13)
Viewed this swashbuckling fantasy again and found it to be just as good as it was the first time. So it's two and a half hours long. I didn't notice it. Depp's performance aside, the best element of this 2003 picture is the story, a sweeping action-adventure story. It was stylishly designed and shot. Let's not forget Geoffrey Rush, he was suitably menacing and chilling with a touch of humor. A true treasure of a movie! |

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006, PG-13)
The Davy Jones character was fantastic, played so convincingly by Bill Nighy. The costume designs were even more outstanding and the locations look just breathtaking in Blue Ray. POTC 2 is indeed darker than the first. It is still filled with lots of action and adventure but I found it to be lacking of freshness in story. Some of the best dialogues came from the 1st POTC. |

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2007, PG-13)
At wits end, I must say! This one in my opinion deserves to walk the plank, fed to the sharks. POTC 1 was too amazing for words. POTC 2 was not bad but the 3rd, where to start? The first problem with the movie is that Jack Sparrow isn't seen for half an hour and when he does come on, it one of the worst opening scene for him. You can find some of the most dimwitted dialogue here. The story was too long, clocking in at almost three hours. By the time it ends I got a tad seasick. |

Outlander (2009, R)
I am surprised that this movie went unnoticed at the cinemas, definitely would have been better to catch it in the big sceeen. This is quite an entertaining SciFi/Norse legend film. Story revolves around the vikings and a spaceman battling an alien beast known as the Moorwen in 709 DC, in the Iron Age. I had enjoyed watching Sophia Myles in Tristan & Isolde and now she portrays a brave Viking Princess. A decent effort by unknown director Howard McCain. |

Arabian Nights (2000, Unrated)
Hallmark Entertainments Arabian Nights, is the story of a womans attempt to save the one she loves, through the art of story-telling. Set in mysterious Arabia, it traces Scheherezade, who with more and more of her tales, escapes her husband, Schariars, death traps. After being betrayed by his first wife, Schahriar has lost all trust, and kills his new brides the morning after the weddings. When Scheherazade decides to marry him, she saves her kingdom and her life, by seducing her husbands imagination. Breathtaking cinematography, a fairy-tale theme, and beautifully-mastered special effects contribute to the unforgettable overall effect of the film. My review: There has been so much garb on TV lately that one would not have any expectations for this one. This pure myth and magical tale proved many wrong. It is highly entertaining with great much loved classical tales like Ali Baba, Aladdin and more. Wonderful special effects, lush costumes and sets kept me entertained throughout the 175 minutes. |

Anna Karenina (1997, PG-13)
A wonderful Russian tragic love story but it is a pity that the acting from the lead actress falls short here. She is just not passionate enough as Anna who gave up her marriage, her son, her place in society to be with her lover. I loved the cinematography! The ballroom and the horse racing scenes were splendid. The atmosphere during the 19th century is very authentic. |

Ella Enchanted (2004, PG)
A tongue in cheek kind of fairytale. I enjoyed this light hearted piece of enchantment. Recommended to those who are fans of Hugh Dancy(his crisp english accent gets me everytime), those who love Anne Hathway's work. She is luminous with those big expressive eyes and charming smile. I didnt know that she could sing! Powerful and beautiful voice. And for those who digs fairies, ogres, elves and other enchanted beings. So what if it is targetted for younger audiences, the young at heart would love this one just as well. |

The Newton Boys (1998, PG-13)
A true story of the Newton brothers, who are regarded as the most successful bank robbers in the history of the United States. Takes place sometime the early roaring 1920s.The film smells distinctly of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Oh well, women, girls are going to love this. All 4 Texan Newton brothers were played by bright eyes wonders McConaughey ,Hawke,D'Onofrio and Ulrich and they are pleasing to the eyes. Might cringed at some of the most stupefying antics of the bankrobbing scenes. Overall an average but not a great movie. |

Appaloosa (2008, R)
Westie movies are so rare these days. I was happy to have finally obtained this DVD. I find that this is a different kind of western movie, that sparkles with hidden humor. Don t care much for Renee's loose character here, in fact her character is completely ridiculous. She plays a refined lady but gosh she was ready to hop into any man's bed given a chance. But watch it for Ed Harris and especially Viggo Mortensen performances. In terms of storyline,I still prefer 3:10 to yuma though. |

Public Enemies (2009, R)
Reasons I wanted to watch this one soooooooooo badly: Direction by Michael Mann. Bale n Depp against each other and who could forget the phenomenal performance by the luminous Marion Cotillard in La vie en rose. All the winning formula here right? Well it is not a total disaster of a movie but not quite up there with Heat. What s with shaky, quick-cutting camerawork style, I know it was intended to give it a sense of urgency and adrenaline, but to me it was downright distracting. One of the worst cinematography I ve encountered. What I find thats pretty good here were the elaborately staged shoot-out sequences by Mann aka King of film shootouts and Depp was mesmerizing as Dillinger. |

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999, R)
Milla plays the medieval saint, Joan of Arc, a young woman who would inspire and lead her countrymen until her execution at the age of nineteen BUT instead of inspiring she came off as whiny, screeching, fanatical loon. Oh and the dialogue is absolutely terrible. This was set in the 15th century, so why were the actors speaking like it is in modern times???This sword and sorcery epic by Besson is quite a disappointment. A 3 hours torture. |

The End of the Affair (1999, R)
Two very gifted stars brought Graham Greene's novel to life. Also masterfully constructed by writer-director Neil Jordan. Ralph Fiennes has a face made to make period pictures, he plays a brooding novelist who loves Moore 's character with an obsessive passion and Moore was perfect, gave a heartfelt performance of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage. The film is set in London in the early 1940s, wonderful cinematography. A truly sad, beautiful and passionate story not to be missed. |

Love in the Time of Cholera (2007, R)
Tells a love story about one man's grand love for a woman who marries another. To be exact, he loved and longed for her for fifty one years, nine months and four days. Giovana Mezzogiorno's performance was amazing! Here one can view the development of her character throughout the stages of her ilfe, from her youth through her old age. Javier Bardem is an excellent actor, carried his character well. The settings were well captured too, the very essence of Columbia, a very period feel during the 1800s. A fantastic adaptation from the book. |
