Comics come to life!

An ordered ranking of the best live action movies depciting comic book characters, not including cartoon comics aka funnies.

This is not simply a list of every movie that has been granted a comic book. These are movies that originated from a comic book such as TMNT, and do not include movies starring characters like Robocop, or Predator which have been given comics after the success of a movie.

You might ask how come a certain movie is higher on the list than a movie I gave more stars to. Thats because the stars represent more specificaly how much I personally enjoyed the movie and prefer the content, and not exactly the overall quality of the movie when compared to others.
This list is not yet complete.

Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man 3
SM3 deals with some heavy issues, and carries alot of emotional weight like its predecessors. Just like any good soap opera will, SM3 spins an intricate of web of human drama, filled with love triangles and bitter rivalries, while still managing to deliver action and excitement on a grand scale. Just when you feel that the mood of the film is going in a dark direction it pulls you back out into the light. Ultimately a film for all ages but undoubtebly a movie that kids will want to see, and as a any one might hope, this superhero tale comes with a strong moral lesson. A notion well worth repeating and remembering that in life our decisions often dictate who we really are and that there is always a choice between whats right and wrong. It's as simple as it is true and SM3 does incorporate this message rather well.

On the surface SM3 may seem like a sloppy put together of characters and events, all slammed into 1 tight package but, if you watch it enough you should realise that, the movie is balanced quite well. Each charcter has a cycle of highs and lows that either directly or indirectly influence anothers.

I believe expectations for this film were extermely high, with the tremendous task of outdoing the previous films without going overboard and at the same time , wrapping things up into a happy little ending that satisfies the lot.A difficult job no doubt but not nearly as impossible as it may seem, and one this production manages to fullfill. With the addition of new characters and larger than life villians, a higher level of intensity is achieved. Very few films can brag that they were able to successfully incorporate 3 villians and only 1 hero into a logical story. Fan favorites the Sandman and Venom translate well on the big screen and fit into the story's plot almost flawlessly. The Sandman's tragedy is one that harkens back to the root of our story and reflects the same struggle over the darkeness within Peter, along with the heavy message he conveys to him near the end. Suddenly the first films message becomes all the more clear and is seen from a different angle. "with great power comes responsability" The resposability of not taking revenge on those that have hurt you.

More attention and development should have gone into Venom's portion of the script, which seems tacked on and under emphasized, when combined with the laundry list of other elements within the plot. Venom was used simply as an example of what can happen to you if you allow revenge to take control of your heart.

All the visuals, everything from character design to the background settings, look and play their part wonderfully, showing that afterall this is Sony and you know there going to get it right.

With this film the trilogy is complete and perhaps the characters we were introduced to have come full circle. From friends to rivals to bitter enemies and back to friends again, but for Main characters Peter and MJ, well it seems things are back on track, all we can do is hope.

There is so much to say about how well this movie was made it shaddows most of its blemishes but harcore fans will break out the microscope and be sure to point out each little inconsistency. Yes there were a few scenes that should have been heavily edited or even removed altogether due to absurdity, and a few moments where the acting didn't match the emotion of the script, but overall I'm truely pleased at how SM3 turned out and will patiently and devoutedly await for a second trilogy.

Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
The big surprise here was the A list of actors and top performances.
Its about time Bridges took on the role of a true villian, and boy did he nail it. This movie is just laced with cool. Outstanding Effects corieography camerawork and story. Ironman has earned its spot as a true hollywood blockbuster. The CGI on the meatlic suit was flawless and magnificient. I think that because of this film we will definetly see a new generation of devout Ironman fans. The movie did so well in pointing out that hes not your average muscle bound hero with a cape and sense of justice. Ironman is a warrior of the new millenium, dominated by speed and technology.

Batman Returns (1992,  PG-13)
Batman Returns
Tim Burton at his best.
6
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I really hate to burst everyone?s bubble ( ok I lied ) but this movie wasn?t all that grandiose or spectacular. I mean there were occasions that lifted us to the very edge of our seat and moments that might have made our skin crawl, but all in all was it really as good as you predicted it would be?

To me the movie just begs a lot of questions, too many than a good film should, and I?ll leave it to you to try and fill in the blanks for me. I can?t really seem to make up my mind about how much I like or dislike it.

Were they?re really enough scenes with Batman? What besides the action and characters stand out, in this movie? Could you repeat the majority of the plot or interpret the meaning behind it?

If you think you loved this movie, let me give you some things to think about.

Jumping on the Heath Ledger bandwagon was more of a trend in 2008 than going to the unemployment office.

Morgan Freeman, barely there

Commissioner Gordon, did you really think he was dead?

The story of two face... under played or overplayed?

Christian Bale and Michael Kane?no chemistry together

Bruce?s love interest?None in this movie

Maggie Gyllenhaal?a poor replacement for Katie Holmes

Batman?s voice was horribly raspy, and inconsistent. Someone offer him a cough drop.

The Joker, more of a pathetic deviant scum than the threatening ego maniacal genius of the past. Did he get away?, Will he be brought to justice for all those murders?
Apparently it?s not worth knowing.

The movie just didn?t transition well from scene to scene. The story was very scattered and sparse. Lines were often jumbled and under emphasized.

Hoorah for good costumes, hoorah for good makeup and special effects, hoorah for the explosive action, and hoorah for the casting, but despite having all that going for it, where was the real element of delight? The storytelling just didn?t sell it.

The Incredible Hulk
Not enough Hulk. Spare me the mellow drama.
the previous cast was much better. acting and script was poor. This story was
too basic and boring. Action scenes were awesome but too few and far between. Amazing special effects. I love the fight at the end it was explosive and worth the ticket price. Most of the plot was ridiculous.
Could have been alot better and was expected to be.

Graphics and animation on the Hulk Model were greately improved and the Villian was short lived but impressive.

I would have liked to have heard more words from the Hulk although, hearing him shout Hulk Smash! was very satisfying. Overall pretty cool.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
James was once a boy,but that was a long long time ago. Now he goes by the name Logan. He has suffered more pain than any man has ever endured. Been through hell and back many times, and inside he still hurts, but how'd he get there? And where did it all go wrong? Im glad you asked.

Straight from the pages of Marvel comics comes the latest installation of a film based entirely on the origins of the widely popular and highly fan favored character Wolverine.

Played by the renown actor, and supposed world?s sexiest man Hugh Jackman; this is the fourth time Wolverine has appeared on the big screen, but this time the spotlight is on one man, and he owns it.

Even though the film bares the name X-men in the title don't expect to see a lot of familiar faces. This story goes much farther back and predates the team by a century or more.

Have you ever found yourself wondering, or caught up in a conversation about just how did Wolverine get those shiny metal claws? Or perhaps you were the odd man out because you didn't have a clue. Well its about time for you to see for yourself.

In this flick Marvel reveals to the mainstream, a lot of the mysteries behind the man with the metal. He was once a soldier, make that 4 or 5 times a soldier. He was once a son, a brother, a best friend, a lover, an honest hardworking man, but still theres more ( and not just underneath the skin )

Maybe you do know about his mutenagenic healing factor, which partially explains why he's impervious to old age, but chances are you don't know about his involvement in the CIA.

The story leaves a lot of the details out forcing you to assume, and play a little game of fill in the blank.

Wolverine is a movie about love, trust, and betrayal but mostlyt about blood thirsty revenge.
Its also a movie without highs and lows, its all pretty much straightforward. The whole way through its anxiety driven, blood for blood. It seems to focus on the concept of war.

It hardly gives you a chance to feel anything else, even at its would be saddest moments. What good is a movie that only makes you feel one emotion?

The pace that it moves from scene to scene leaves you feeling empty and conflicted.

As far as the action goes, theres certainly plenty of it. Everyone seems to jump on board like a wrestling free for all. Fighting, hatred, rage, and killing is what this movie is all about. Not very flashy or stylistic to say the least. You wont see any elaborate costumes or really dazzling special effects, just a whole lotta SLASH and BASH, almost what you'd expect from a $2 comic book, isn't it ironic?

Theres nothing at all subtle or poetic about this, but does anyone care? After all its Wolverine not Shakespeare, but it turns out it really does matter, as movie goers seem to be less than thrilled with the this release.

How is it that Wolverine's back-story can be so rich and intricate, ( There's been literally novel upon novel written about him), yet when it comes to the plot, it seems to be the one thing they left out? I say left out because I have to wonder that maybe they did it on purpose so that audiences wouldn't be bored with the lack of action, but it seems to have had the reverse effect. It's like making a dinner and only serving dessert, or making a pie without the crust. Whatever you compare it to, something is definitely missing. Sad that such a fantastic character gets treated this way.

Many Marvel mainstays and personalities make their debut here, but characters are rarely referred to as their codename, although you have quite the rundown featuring Gambit, Sabbertooth, Kestrel, Maverick, Bolt, the Blob, Silver Fox, Cyclops, Deadpool, White Queen and a few unmentionables.

Hey not bad, but none of them truly leave much of an impression other than being flat, except for the Blob. He's more round, yet still somehow seems 1 dimensional. ( Does he really even belong in this story? Whose idea was this? My only guess is that the producers wanted to use him instead of Mastodon who is a lot less famous, but fans should know Blob doesn't belong.)

Near the end of the film everything is such a mess, all the characters are scattered and so is whats left of the plot. You've practically stopped caring seeing as how Wolverine is practically invincible but he has already been defeated emotionally.

This movie is 99% action and 1% drama, and just like the ending of any 12 - 25 page comic book you'll ever read it has no real conclusion, and the ending is just the beginning of more strange things or chaos. Still its Wolverine, its intense, its got box office appeal and you know you want to see it.

Watchmen
Its not brilliant, but it is smart.

Finaly a DC superhero team that made it to the big screen.

This movie would make Superman cry like a pussy.

They sure as hell arent the
X-men, but who cares, they kick ass.

Filled with Batman inspired tragedy and grittiness.
Its dark, sexual, and politicaly aware.

Reminiscent of Frank miller's Sin City and other shocking street tales, this movie relies on edgy and conroversial themes.

Violenece is rampant and explicit in detail, enough to satisfy the mature fan, and turn away the heads of any practical viewer.

Deeply rooted with issues of opression, morality, and resposability, making it heavy between the lines.

Spectacular fight scenes and tremndous stunts will keep you entertained and leave you wanting more.

The costumes look, so damn cool, too cool for words.

"Who watches the Watchmen ? " In this case we all do. : )
