Johnny Guitar (1954,  PG)
Johnny Guitar
A feminist western with the gender roles reversed. The title character is almost forgettable compared with Crawford and McCambridge and the bitter rivalry between them.

The story itself is rather second rate, but the characters and the glorious overacting make this cult classic worth seeing.

Brilliant film. James Dean in Rebel is the symbol of teenage rebellion. After all these years it's still relevant today. A classic which you just have to see.
38
The Man with the Golden Arm (1955,  Unrated)
39
Smiles Of A Summer Night (1955,  Unrated)
Smiles Of A Summer Night
Bergman does comedy!

Lighter in tone compared to most of his other films, but as always brilliant. Witty script and great performances.

Lola Montès (The Fall of Lola Montes) (The Sins of Lola Montes) (1955,  Unrated)

All That Heaven Allows (1955,  Unrated)
All That Heaven Allows
Better than the previous years "Magnificent Obsession", also with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. Again a typically melodramatic story but the Douglas Sirk touch makes it well worth watching. Gorgeous cinematography by Russell Metty.
45

Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows) (Lift to the Scaffold) (Frantic)
'Ascenseur pour l'échafaud' is gorgeous to the eyes and the ears. Every frame of Henri Decaë's cinematography is indeed pretty enough to frame and the Miles Davis soundtrack is superb. Moreau puts in a great performance, the scenes of her walking through Paris really are a joy to watch. Malle succesfully blended Film Noir with the coolness of the Nouvelle Vague and created and truly original and thrilling masterpiece.

An early masterpiece by Kubrick with an incredibly moving ending.

Witness for the Prosecution (1957,  Unrated)
64
Popiól i diament (Ashes and Diamonds) (1958,  Unrated)
Popiól i diament (Ashes and Diamonds)
The final part of Andrzej Wajda's War Trilogy. Some say this is the best of the three but I prefer the previous film Kanal.
65
The Defiant Ones (1958,  Unrated)
66
Touch of Evil (1958,  PG-13)
Touch of Evil
Beautiful, stylish cineamatography plus a great story. Most of the performances are great, only flaw being a not so convincing performance by Charlton Heston as a Mexican. Also a brilliant, but brief role for Marlene Dietrich.

The Tiger of Eschnapur (1959,  Unrated)

The Indian Tomb (Das Indische Grabmal) (1959,  Unrated)

Peeping Tom (1960,  Unrated)
Peeping Tom
Totally ahead of it's time. A classic.
88
Purple Noon (1996,  PG-13)
Purple Noon
A Patricia Highsmith adaption with the handsome as ever Alain Delon as the cold and calculating Tom Ripley. As well as Delon's stunningly chilling performance, singer Marie Laforet is worth noting in what was her first film role. All this coupled with stunning photography and brilliant Nino Rota soundtrack makes one fine thriller.

Eyes Without a Face (,  Unrated)
