L' Année Dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad) (1961,  Unrated)
L' Année Dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad)
Simply a masterpiece.

A simple plot of a man trying to convince a woman that they had an affair the previous year, yet still a complex puzzle which will take more than one viewing to fully undertand.
The black and white cinematography is beautiful. The tracking shots through the corridors of the baroque hotel are also sublime.
A truly unique experience.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1960,  Unrated)
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Bette Davis in her best over the top acting mode with outrageous make-up, childlike outfits and a certain hatred for Joan Crawford. Both hilarious and horrifying at the same time.

Disappointing compared to Tony Richardson's earlier films.

The best part of the film has got to be:

THE HIGHWAYMAN:"Stand and deliver!"
MISS WESTERN:"What?"
THE HIGHWAYMAN:"Stand and deliver!"
MISS WESTERN:"Deliver?Deliver what?I am no traveling midwife!"

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Hilarious! Possibly my new favourite Kubrick.
I can't praise Peter Seller's performance enough, each of his characters were brilliant.

"Sir, you can't let him in here. He'll see everything. He'll see the big board!"

Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) (1963,  PG)
Il Gattopardo (The Leopard)
A gorgeous Italian epic. Beautiful in everyway from the acting, to the grand visuals and to the superb Nini Rota score. My first Visconti film, I'm definitely looking forward to discovering his other works.

A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari) (1964,  R)

Goldfinger (1964,  PG)

A Hard Day's Night (1964,  G)
A Hard Day's Night
"Are you a Mod or a Rocker?"
"Actually I'm a Mocker"

Even if you are not a fan of The Beatles this is a highly enjoyable film. John, Paul, George and Ringo provide their own unique brand of comedy plus some classic early Beatles tunes.

Viva Maria (1965,  Unrated)
Viva Maria
Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau frolic round early 1900's Central America, leading a revolution, blowing things up, and inventing the striptease along the way. Sounds good? Sadly, that's not really the case. Bardot, Moreau and Malle have all done better things.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965,  Unrated)
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
A great cast (Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, Oskar Werner), but the story just didn't keep me interested.
Nice cinematography though, very atmospheric.

Doctor Zhivago (1965,  PG-13)

Pierrot le Fou (Pierrot Goes Wild) (Crazy Pete) (1969,  Unrated)
Pierrot le Fou (Pierrot Goes Wild) (Crazy Pete)
"It is not really a film, it's an attempt at cinema. Life is the subject, with [Cinema]Scope and color as its attributes...In short, life filling the screen as a tap fills bathtub that is simultaneously emptying at the same rate." - Jean Luc Godard

"The film is like a battleground. Love, Hate, Action, Violence, and Death. In one word, Emotion." - Samuel Fuller

The Cincinnati Kid (1965,  Unrated)

The Knack... and How to Get It (1965,  Unrated)
The Knack... and How to Get It
Very much a product of it's time, which is probably why I found it produced smiles rather than full on laughs. That being said it still manages to be rather charming and enjoyable. Richard Lester does a good job directing, continuing the style of "A Hard Day's Night". Rita Tushingham is also good in her girl from the North role.
Just a little fact, "The Knack" features a few rising actresses in thier first (be it uncredited) roles. Jane Birkin as the girl on the motorcycle, Charlotte Rampling as the girl water skiing and Jacqueline Bisset, but I didn't manage to spot her!

Alfie (1966,  PG)
Alfie
I enjoyed this film. The character Alfie was a bit of a bastard towards his women (always refering to them as "it")but Michael Caine bought a certain charm to the character making him more likeable. This is meant to be a comedy but there were some pretty grim scenes (mainly the illegal abortion scen...(read more)e). Shelley Winters also put in a good performance who in the end gave Alfie a taste of his own medicine.
In all a good film showing another side of 60s London, but nowadays is slightly dated.

Seconds (1966,  R)
Seconds
Visually this film is stunning. The cinematography is amazing all thanks to James Wong Howe. He uses fish eye lenses, hand held camera shots and interesting angles to create a sense of paranoia and claustrophobia.
A movie way ahead of it's time, with great acting by Rock Hudson, defiantly one to see.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway play the two leads perfectly. The final scene where they take one last loving look at each other before both being riddled with bullets will stay in my mind for days to come I'm sure.

If.... (1968,  Unrated)
If....
Classic. A stunning film which to this day is still powerful. Malcolm McDowell gives a great performance in what was his first major role. Love the jumps from colour to black and white, even if it was down to budget!

Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) (1968,  PG-13)
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West)
Westerns are not exactly a favourite genre of mine but this is something else entirely! The combination of great directing, acting, and Morricone's epic score is faultless. Apart from being the best Western I've ever seen, it's up there with the best films I've ever seen.
