Gomorrah (Gomorra) (2008,  Unrated)
Gomorrah (Gomorra)
Slightly disappointed in this one, only because it?s been my most anticipated film for the last couple of months and it didn?t quite deliver the heighth of my expectations, I found myself bored throughout most of the film, but found myself warming towards it in the last few scenes.

Comparrisons have been made to ?City of God' and there is definitely a similar effect, in fact the acting and believability of this film is not in question as both were great. It was more to do with the structure of the storyline ? in that if someone asked me about the storyline of this film, all that I could tell them is it?s about drugs and killing. I?m sure of course, it will benefit from further viewings.

American Gangster (2007,  R)
American Gangster
This film is not for people looking for non-stop action, based on a true story, this lengthly drawn out film is only for those with the stamina to see it out to the end.

Admittedly if I'd seen this on dvd, I would have been tempted to quit watching after the first hour or would have at least watched it in two sittings. At the end of the film it leaves you feeling glad you saw it through and it is indeed a hell of a tale. My advice would be not to read too much abou the film before you see it.

Great performance from Denzel, but I have to say that it was Russell Crowe that shone for me.

VERDICT: A Brilliantly put together film for those who can last the distance
3
Little Fish (2006,  R)
Little Fish
Not quite what I was expectiing from this film. The acting was fine, Cate Blanchett was very good, but the story was a little stretched out and there wasn't many high points to accomodate the low points
4
Shrooms (2008,  Unrated)
Shrooms
The very beginning of this films looks quite realistic and gives hope of potential, when within seconds it changes to a very typical teen travelling Horror.

Just in case the American teens, along with the Irish friend (who doesn?t actually sound Irish) do not give you the hint that this is based in Ireland, look out for the token Irish Dancers in the airport near the beginning of the film ? there you have it, we are in Ireland!

Like many Teen Horrors previously, each of the characters are strategically created to clash with other personalities, which give you a ?been there seen it, kind of feel?.

There is a little credit due for the original plot using magic mushrooms which led to some quite good trippy moments, which I won?t spoil for you.

All in all, it was an easy watching Horror film with little glimmers of originality, but it really doesn?t offer that much more than any other film within this genre.

The Business (2005,  Unrated)
The Business
Danny Dyer was made for roles like this. It?s a harsh lesson to the quick rise and fall of an underworld lifestyle, perhaps glamourised a little too much, but a pretty good watch all the same.

There are some great characters created here, in typical Brit crime to Spain fashion.

If you are easily offended by bad language, you may wish to avoid as this film really has quite a lot.
6
London (2005,  R)
London
A very one dimensional film, aimed at the ?everybody?s been there? type of crowd. Hyped up with drug fuelled conversations about lost love, mainly filmed in a bathroom or in flashback to happier times.

Very much an anti-climax of a film, which I found a little depressing.
7
Down to the Bone (2004,  R)
Down to the Bone
Drawn out, but an extremely realistic film about drug abuse with some impressive performances, in particular Vera Farmiga, which is definitely a name I shall be taking notice of in the future, her role in this was faultless and she reminded me of Cate Blanchett in many ways.
8
Layer Cake (2004,  R)
Layer Cake
An incrediibly clever ganster movie, which sees Daniel Craig at his acting best. Some great characters, some clever twists and unexpected ending
9
Stone Cold Killers (2004,  Unrated)
Stone Cold Killers
This film really created a mixed opinion with me. It's obviously a very low budget film, but it has a pretty good theme and storyline (which would probably have benefited from a bigger budget). The situation seemed real enough, but some of the acting made the film a little too boring and a little too drawn out.
10
Maria Full of Grace (2004,  R)
Maria Full of Grace
An impressive film which shows a realistic story based around drug muelling. Great performances all around, but particularly from Catalina Sandino Moreno who played the lead character.

A Drama which really pulls you in and see the circumstances from different viewpoints.

Definitely a recommendation ? an instant favourite for me.
11
Veronica Guerin (2003,  R)
Veronica Guerin
Another stunning performance by Cate Blanchett and a great supporting cast.

A very powerful story based upon the true life of Veronica Guerrin, a journalist from Ireland who's career and search for the truth comes at a high price, amid the drug pushers and criminals.

Some very realistic violence used in a few of the scenes.

Cate Blanchett surely does seem to be able to turn her hand to anything and any accent.
12
Blow (2001,  R)
Blow
The rise and fall life story of George Jung, well played by Jonny Depp. An interesting account of the Cocaine Entrepeneur's life style during that era and the meaning of his life when things go wrong.
13
Requiem for a Dream (2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
Requiem for a dream is a cleverly put together story, showing the lives of four drug addict, three addicted to narcotics and one to prescribed drugs.

The acting is great all around, the creative filming allows the viewer to understand the feelings of the characters and the music really dramatizes the situation.

Best performance has to go to Ellen Burstyn
14
Human Traffic (2000,  R)
Human Traffic
If you're a raver/clubber from the 90's then I'm sure you'll relate to this film
15
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998,  R)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Sorry, I know this is a popular favourite, but I found this film boring. The character taken on by Johnny Depp was brillient and there were some funny moments but I thought the storyline was pretty weak
16
Nil by Mouth (1997,  R)
Nil by Mouth
If you're easily offended by bad language do not watch this film. It's a very gritty down to earth story of one family's troubles.

Kathy Burke and Ray Winstone's acting were very believable, they did an amazing job. Brits will also recognise many of the rest of the cast too.
17
Twin Town (1997,  R)
18
Basquiat (1996,  R)
Basquiat
An oddly compelling tale of an Artist, I had no previous knowledge of. The main character was very likeable as and with quite a star cast, this film does have entertainment value. It is based on the true story of the Artist and watches the rise and fall of the man.
19
Trainspotting (1996,  R)
Trainspotting
I've lost count how many times I've watched this film now.

The Harsh shocking reality of Danny Boyle's film adapted from the novel by Irvine Welsh, was a controversial revolution at it's release and it still remains (in my opinion) the best film of it's genre, a timeless classic highlighting the problems of this huge epidemic.

The film that brought Ewin McGreggor to fame and by far his best performance to date. All the actors were cast extremely well included Carlyle's portrayal of 'Begsby' proving the hard man doesn't need to be a big mean looking man.
20
The Basketball Diaries (1995,  R)
The Basketball Diaries
The Basketball diaries takes you on a journey of a drug user from the very beginning and shows the escalation into drug abuse and the crimes comitted to support the habbit. The film lures you into a false sense of security by showing the boys just as juvenile delinquents , not experiencing too many problems, then bang, they're hooked and everything changes.

The end result (in my opinion) is Dicaprio?s finest performance to date and this is why I feel in later years he took on a few films that really didn?t show his acting skills at his best. One particular scene is extremely powerful and emotional.

Based on a true story, this is a remarkable tale cleveryly put together.

Killing Zoe (1994,  R)
Killing Zoe
Directed by Roger Avery, Produced by Quentin Tarantino, amidst the height of the 90?s Cult drug fuelled storylines, topped with violent criminals and a chaotic bank robbery.

Some pretty good camera shot interpretations and probably the role Eric Stoltz is best known for (apart from his smaller role in Pulp Fiction that is).

Certainly not flawless and perhaps the one that has dated more than some of the other within this genre and era, but one woth watching.
23
True Romance (1993,  R)
True Romance
I'd actually forgotten I used to be a fan of Christian Slater, of course we don't seem to hear much of him now, but he and Patricia Arquette pull of this film as the main characters, accompanied of course by a strong cast of great actors. It's the ultimate story of love at first sight and of course romance. It has to be one of the funniest parts Brad Pitt has ever played.
24
New Jack City (1991,  R)
New Jack City
A great film in it's time
25
Drugstore Cowboy (1989,  R)
Drugstore Cowboy
A film which although lacks any major excitement is still a fairly interesting watch. You see the film through a viewer?s eyes and perhaps create your opinions on this as opposed to making the viewer see it through an Addict?s eyes, which many later films following this theme have managed to do.

It?s a very watchable movie, just feel it lacked a little something, worth seeing if it appears on tv and enjoyable performances from Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch.
26
Scarface (1983,  R)
Scarface

Midnight Express (1978,  R)
Midnight Express
Ever been to a Turkish prison? This film does seem to go on forever even though it's just under 2 hours long. An excellent performance from Brad Davis and an excellent story based on true events, this film kind of has a big moral to it, that one stupid mistake can change the rest of your life. The film highlights both mental and physical brutalitiy from police and how laws vary from place to place.

VERDICT: If you have the patience to watch this then you'll find it a great movie
