In Bruges (2008,  R)
In Bruges 4.0 Stars
This film is an absolutely terrific dark comedy and in many ways is the best film I've seen so far this year.
Colin Farrel is fantastic in his role as a hitman who shows genuine distress over an event in his past. He really does it well. Brendan Gleeson who I don't think I ever encountered prior to this film is also fantastic. But best of all is Ralph Fiennes who is outstanding as the traditional cockney gangster boss character, but plays it with his own little spin and turns it into an absolutely hilarious character.
The script is also outstanding. Not only does the dialogue flow really energetically and naturalistically in a comedic way, but the way everything comes together within the film -not one thing isn't there for a reason -is just remarkable.
The setting itself is a nice looking backdrop for a film, I must say, and whilst the cinematography isn't anything special, the film just looks nice thanks to Bruges. The score is also quite good.
This film ought to mark great things for the future of it's writer/director. It's a real gem of film and deserves to be given a chance by all.

It's like if David Cronenberg had directed Thankyou for Smoking. But, not quite that awesome.

A little gem of a crime-caper film and with both the legends William H Macy and Steve Buscemi.

Tropic Thunder (2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder 4.0 Stars
This is the funniest film to be released in ages. It's a pitch-perfect parody of Hollywood. The fake movie trailers as well as scenes from the film within the film are absolutely spot-on, as are the takes on actors that we see. It's remarkable for that reason and is actually a hell of a lot smarter than it needs to be.
This completely dwarves Pineapple Express as it's not only a better comedy, but a better action film.
The cast are all-round fantastic, especially Robert Downey Jr who is just brilliant as usual.
It's nice that almost every role in the film, big or small is a famous face. It means you can star-spot throughout the film.
Plus it's suprisingly well shot and the music is suprisingly good. I guess it had to be to get the war-movie parody thing right.
All in all, it's good stuff. Ben Stiller is really growing as both a director and writer.

Bio Zombie (1998,  Unrated)
Bio Zombie 3.5 Stars
There's something so endearing about Hong Kong's sense of humour. This film, whilst no masterpiece, is a great bit of fun.
Almost every character is candidate for the most 2-dimensional character I have ever seen and some of the dialogue is awful, however, I have a sneaking suspicion this is due to the dub I watched as opposed the film itself (couldn't get a subtitled copy). Especially as some parts of the dialogue are great and really witty.
It's a very strangely structured film, starting off almost like if Stephen Chow had directed Mallrats and soon turning into a typical straight-to-video zombie film (except it's good) before moving on to a dark ending. But for some reason that works here. Zombie films are often weirdly structured after all.
Overall, it's incredibly enjoyable, but if you can, go for the subtitled option. The two main characters are very likeable and there's some great humour. Also, it's the first film or anything that I've ever seen suggest the notion of human sushi, which is in my opinion something for it to be proud of.
