The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
This is my favorite of the trilogy. It's the best fantasy movie ever I think.
2
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight was simply incredible. Spiderman 3 was a disappointment after all the wait. The Dark Knight however is even better than I hoped for. It takes Batman and the villains seriously. So you don't get shots of Batman's butt or him saying awful lines, like "I don't fit in at a family pic-nic", or "it's the car, chicks dig the car". While the villains don't act like something from the 60's tv series.

The Dark Knight has Batman (Christian Bale), Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) teaming up to bring down criminals. They aren't doing a bad job; a new criminal named the Joker (Heath Ledger) just might be more than they can handle though. He's a twisted and creepy villain with no compassion for anyone. He threatens to kill a different person until Batman reveals who he is. Which starts to become too much for Bruce Wayne since people he cares about start to become targets.

The movie is an ingenious masterpiece with many twists and turns. You never know what to expect from the movie. Despite being a super hero film it also works as a thriller/mob movie. Sometimes I even had a hard time convincing myself that Michael Mann wasn't the director lol.

Comic fans should still be pleased though. Heath Ledger is amazing as the Joker and it's sad that he won't have a long career of playing the part. He's creepy, twisted, funny and menacing in the role. What also helps the movie is that everyone else is in top form as well. While Christopher Nolan knows how to handle having more than one villain, unlike Sam Raimi with Spiderman 3. He does have a task ahead of him though to try and top this with a 3rd film. I don't see that happening but I can't wait for more either way.
3
The Departed (2006,  R)
4
The Passion of the Christ (2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
People expected an uplifting film and got a realistically disturbing and brutally violent film instead. However the flashbacks of Jesus can be a little uplifting. While James Caviezel should've just been handed the oscar for his performance as Jesus but he wans't even nominated!
5
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) (2000,  PG-13)
6
Spider-Man 2 (2004,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 2
A little over-rated but still was much better done than Spiderman 3. It has more going for it, a lot more.
7
Gladiator (2000,  R)
Gladiator
It wasn't really best picture worthy but it's still really good. The performances are all fine, while the action is exciting as well.
8
Memento (2000,  R)
9
Traffic (2000,  R)
10
Walk the Line (2005,  PG-13)
Walk the Line
Walk the Line is a great movie due to many different reasons. The performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are incredible for one.

Phoenix though, I think is the one that should've won an Oscar. He sounds exactly like Johny Cash if you listen to the real singers in the credits. Reese Witherspoon does a great singing job but she sounds nothing like the woman.

I also liked Robert Patrick as Cash's father. Besides the acting being strong, the music scenes are well done and very entertaining. The drama and love story also wheels you in.
11
No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
The film is well acted and chilling with fine direction. It's Javier Barden that makes the movie with his scary and unpredictable villian. I literly got chills when ever the guy is shown. He's so emotionless and low key that I almost thought of him as a Terminator except he's better at it than Arnold lol.
12
Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
An obnoxious, sarcastic and prejudice old man (Clint Eastwood) accidentally saves the Chinese boy next door. He's then honored by the boy's family and is suddenly getting more attention by them than he'd like. He doesn't see much respect shown by the youth of today, especially by his young granddaughter who was bored at her own grandmothers funeral. So, he takes the boy under his wing because he sees potential in him. He also takes interest in stopping an Asian gang from harassing the boy and his family.

Despite Eastwood saying a prejudice or offensive word pretty near every time he opened his mouth, he had charm and was very entertaining. Everyone else tried hard but Eastwood owned the movie. Ahney Her as the boy's sister had the best scenes with Eastwood though I think. She played off of him well and they were fun together. Christopher Carley had a good role as Eastwood's late wife's priest but the role should have went to a better actor though. While the boy tried hard but his performance wasn't the level of Eastwood's either.

Still though, the movie was one of the best of lat year and shouldn't have been totally shut out at the Oscars. If it was Eastwood's last performance, then he deserved a best actor nomination. Not out of pity though, but because he was awesome in Gran Torino.
13
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
All the hype and Oscar wins annoyed me a little. I had to see Slumdog Millionaire to see what was so great about it. It was so good that I got chills lol. The movie is gripping and always exciting. It also has tons of charm.
14
Cast Away (2000,  PG-13)
15
Road to Perdition (2002,  R)
Road to Perdition
Road to Perdition is an under-rated mob drama that's well made and well acted. It's about a hitman (Hanks) who's betrayed when his son witnesses something that he shouldn't have. His wife and other son are murdered and flees with his son. A dangerous hitman (Jude Law) is on his tail though.

While Hanks seaks revenge on his former boss (Paul Newman) and his son (Danial Craig). This is an intense and gripping movie with nice shoot-outs. It also has heart to it as well. While Hanks gives one of his best performances in a more gritty role. Hell he barely even smiles. Jude Law is fantastic as well. Most of Law's best work come from most of his earlier films like this one.

Paul Newman who's dieing from what I hear gives one of his best last performances as well. I'm glad that he was nominated one last time. Anyway if you haven't seen this movie, I strongly recommend it.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001,  PG-13)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
This is a beautifully acted and beautifully made strange science fiction masterpiece. You hear this tossed around a lot "this is the most visually stunning movie since Blade Runner" with many other movies. But with A.I it's actually true.

It's slightly depressing and disturbing in some parts and in others it's also moving. The film has it's android boy (Haley Joel Osment) looking for the blue fairy from Pinochio so she can make him a real boy. Along the way he meets another Mecca played by Jude Law "a fantastic under-rated performance" who was framed by a human for the murder of a woman.

In a way this is one of Spielberg's most daring movies since it's pretty dark and only heart-warming when it feels like being heart-warming. The heart-warming stuff is sorta just stuck in there at the end for the heck of it. The movie gets compared to E.T. But it's more like Empire of the Sun since you have someone stuck in a world they know nothing about.
17
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) (2001,  PG)
18
Almost Famous (2000,  R)
Almost Famous
It offers great music and great performances. It's one of the best rock films ever. It also has a nice innocence to it that you don't get from a lot of movies.
19
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
Has like 5 endings but it's still one of the best fantasies ever made
20
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
21
X2 (2003,  PG-13)
22
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
It takes Batman as serious as he should be taken although Burton's films did take him serious as well.

But it has more of a human touch than Burton's films since his were done as if they were classic monster films. Plus Christian Bale portrays both Batman and Bruce Wayne probably the best.

Although Keaton didn't do bad and I admit Val Kilmer wasn't a bad Bruce Wayne either. But mostly because as Bruce Wayne Kilmer had better lines than he did as Batman.

Batman Begins also has villains that don't laugh every 30 seconds or have horrible one-liners. Cillian Murphy is creepy as the Scare Crow but one flaw with Nolan's Batman films is that he's not as much of a threat as he could be. Sure, he poisons Batman and sets him on fire...lol but it would have been nice if he had as much screen time as the Joker does in Dark Knight. Liam Neeson though gets more to do and I'll just say that if you never seen the movie.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
It's well acted and probably Tim Burton's best work. I usually don't like musicals but this isn't a bad one, espcially since it's from the twisted mind of Tim Burton :).

Plus Johny Depp and Helen Bohen Carter are excellent. It's just a shame that Burton was robbed of a nomination. Bohen Carter deserved one as well. It also would've been nice if Alan Rickman was nominated for once. He's perfectly evil here as well.
24
District 9 (2009,  R)
District 9
District 9 is the freshest movie I have seen this summer. It's also the best sci-fi film to come along in years. It's about a government agent (Sharlto Copley) assigned to evict aliens from their home. But things go horribly wrong for him when he exposes himself to alien technology that starts turning him into one of them. The government wants to run tests on him, rather than help him. In order to survive, he has to put his life in the hands of one of the aliens who claims he can help.

I found Sharlto's character to not be too likable until the middle of the film. Before that, I found him to be a little annoying. But his performance and the movie get better as it goes on. The documentary parts of the movie are fresh and I haven't seen anything like them in a science fiction film. While the action is very entertaining as well. I have to say I was more into the action in this film than I was from the big anticipated summer movies I've seen this year. The director was also more talented than most of the directors that got hired to make those movies. I liked Star Trek, but this movie was better written and directed than everything else.
25
Spider-Man (2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man
Sam Raimi at his best knowing what a Spiderman film should be like. Spiderman 3, he was more concerned with effects than he was story.
26
Munich (2005,  R)
27
WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
WALL.E is probably my favorite movie of the year so far. It's original, imaginitive and actually one of the best science fictions movies. It's also fun while being sweet, charming and romantic.

It's smart as well with how mankind is off getting fat on a ship after they ruined earth. They are so used to technology doing everything for them that they don't even walk. With how things are going now...it could happen lol.
28
Up (2009,  PG)
Up
Ed Asner talks for a grumpy old man who always dreamed of adventure along with his late wife. After accidentally hurting someone, he's about to be sent to an old folks home. So he attaches a bunch of balloons to his house and is off to Paradise Falls. Since it's the one place him and his wife always wanted to go.

Along for the ride is a boyscout who just happened to be on the property when the house lifted off. He rather just be alone though with his house and the memories of his wife. But he also winds up with more company than he'd like when the trio meets a talking dog and a rare bird while at Paradise Falls.

The movie is sentimental and touching at times. The first 10 minutes especially had me weeping lol. But don't worry, it's not Marley & Me and the movie is more funny than it is sad. It's uplifting in fact. While the talking dogs that work for the villain are hilarious. I also loved the musical score. In closing, just see Up.

The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
The Wrestler is an excellent film about the life of an aging wrestler that did it for over 20 years. Rourke is so believable that it feels as if you're watching the biography of an actual wrestler.

The scenes outside of the ring where he's struggling to have a life without wrestling are also believable. His scenes where he tries to reconnect with his daughter that he left feel authentic and real.

Rourke makes you feel for him and sometimes he also makes you think of him as a jerk who deserves to be alone. Marisa Tomei also does great work as a stripper he befriends and falls for. Both of them deserve Oscar nominations. I think Rourke does even more though since he has been overlooked more than once for fine performances. The end though sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. It was satisfying, yet unsatisfying at the same time, if that makes sense.
30
Shrek (2001,  PG)
Shrek
This movie is fun and original movie that pokes fun at Disney like fairytales. The voice performances are great as well. Especially the work of Eddie Murphy and the under-rated John Lithgow.
31
Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
32
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
Let the Right One In is about a 12 yr old boy named Oskar who's tormented by bullies at school. A new girl moves in to his apartment building and appears to be the same age as him. They become friends and she gives him the courage to stand up to the bullies. He starts to fall for her and wants to go steady with her but he doesn't know that she's actually a vampire.

The movie is dark and twisted, yet their relationship is kind of sweet. Despite the film being creepy and haunting, it also manages to be likable due to the 2 young leads. The only thing that skeeved me out though, is that they didn't have to show the girl's private area. You know an American film wouldn't have got away with
that.

Despite that though I would still recommend it to those who wish Twilight was less romantic, mushy and whimsical. Let the Right One In is kind of romantic but unlike Twilight, you get a good dose of old fashion horror. The direction has an old school feel to it and the film even has the look of a movie from the late 70's or early 80's.
33
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004,  R)
34
Lost In Translation (2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
I'm not sure why some people don't like this movie but I loved it. Bill Murray should have won best actor. I mean, Sean Penn is nominated pretty much every year lol. Murray has never been nominated again, so I wish he won.

I also I liked the Tokyo atmosphere and the chemistry between Murray and Scarlett Johansson. While Anna Faris has some funny scenes where she does karaoke. The movie is a tad over-rated but I still really like it for what it is. It's an innocent romantic movie that's different and smarter than most romantic comedies.
35
The Hurt Locker (2009,  R)
The Hurt Locker
The Hurt Locker is easily the best movie I've seen this year so far. Jeremy Renner (The Unusuals) gives a star making performance as a soldier in Iraq who diffuses bombs. While the movie is always gripping and full of tension. It also has good appearances by Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes and David Morse. Since the Oscars will now have 10 nominations for Best Picture instead of just five, the Hurt Locker definitely should get nominated.
36
Matchstick Men (2003,  PG-13)
Matchstick Men
Matchstick Men was probably Cage's last Oscar worthy performance. He's great as a con-artist with many phobias. While the supporting work is also strong. Just see this movie!
37
Knocked Up (2007,  R)
Knocked Up
I'm not sure which I like more, Knocked Up or Superbad. Both are extremely funny.
38
Catch Me If You Can (2002,  PG-13)
39
A Beautiful Mind (2001,  PG-13)
40
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
I can watch this one without ever getting tired of it. It has a smart story without everything centered around Harry and Lord Voldermortt and I think that's why I like it so much.

It's magical and goofy and it has it's dark moments as well. It cuts some out from the books but at least it makes time for a Quiditch scene. Quiditch is important to Harry in the books and in the movies since this he hasn't mentioned it once.

There's no Voldermort like I said but the movie still packs a punch. It has werewolves, time travel and creepy cloaked figures called Dementors. It also has some good twists. So I can careless that Harry, Ron and Hermione are dressed casual in the movie. That bugged some fans but to me it' doesn't hold it back from being an entertaining Potter movie.
41
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The darkest no doubt but also one of the best
42
Finding Nemo (2003,  G)
43
Kill Bill, Volume 2 (2004,  R)
44
Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003,  R)
45
Ratatouille (2007,  G)
46
A History of Violence (2005,  R)
A History of Violence
This is a gripping movie with an interesting plot. What appears to be a regular family man might infact be hiding from a dark violent past. Some bad people start taunting him and his family after he kills 2 men that try robbing a restuarnt.

They claim that he's not who he says he is. If he really is who they claim he'll have to kill again to protect his family. Everything about this movie is simply solid.
