Blood Diamond
Until I saw this, nothing could convince me to watch Leo Di Caprio. Seems he's decided to be an actor now, and a pretty good one at that.

Con Air (1997,  R)
Con Air
Chris Rock said it best in Dogma "Con Air, Con S@#*. Was it just me or did Nic Cage sound like he has a learning disability?

Van Helsing

Garden State (2004,  R)
Garden State
One of those movies that speaks to a generation. Much like Reality Bites spoke to Gen X, many of the disaffected, detached & desensatized mid to late 20 year olds who are just drifting through life can relate to Largemans numb (though in his case chemically induced)existance & his susequent rebirth when faced with the infinate abyss of life. A film not to be missed.

Interview with the Vampire
Another example of a movie which on it's own is fantastic, but when compared to the book it lacks a little. Same can be said of it's sequel Queen of the Damned (a hybrid of the next 2 books in the series). Still, it's a must watch.

If you watch this movie in the same vain it was made, it's quite funny. Partially a spoof of "the fast & the furious" movies
57
Serenity (2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
Was criminal that Firefly was dropped after one season. Film more than does justice to Joss Whedon's, albeit now considerably more condensed, vision.
58
Lord of War (2005,  R)
Lord of War
Movie never got the publicity it deserved. One of Nic Cages best performances.
59
The Punisher (2004,  R)
The Punisher
Left me conflicted. Story was good but the writing was mediocre. The cast is great but the performances were average. One of those movies you'll really enjoy if you just switch your brain off and watch. I mean everyone loves to cheer on an anti-hero.

Sleepy Hollow (1999,  R)

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989,  PG)
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" Just one of the many pearls of wisdom I still find myself randomly quoting from time to time.
Bill & Ted were kind of forerunners for later "dynamic duos" like Wayne & Garth, Jay & Silent Bob and even Harold & Kumar (though the latter probably owes more to Cheech & Chong). The plot follows what has now become almost the standard for these types of buddy flicks. Two friends face an adversity, in this case the imminent separation of protagonists, they then go on a rollercoaster ride to overcome said adversity and in this case it's almost literal.
I've heard this movie called "stupid" & "cheesie" but that couldn't be more wrong I mean think about it, we learnt that Napoleon was a "short, dead dude", Joan of Arc was "Noah's wife" & that Caesar was the "salad dressing dude" and as for cheesie, it was made in 1989 of course it looks cheesie, everything about the 80's was!
And lastly, always remember, when traveling through time you must always wind your watch, keep a supply of twinkies, gum & pudding on hand and that San Dimas High School Football Rules!
63
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991,  PG)
64
The Perfect Score (2004,  PG-13)
The Perfect Score
By the numbers heist caper that is suprisingly enjoyable.
65
Poseidon (2006,  PG-13)
Poseidon
There's not a lot of remakes that are anywhere near as good as the original, and this isn't an exception. While it's still watchable and probably worth seeing if only for comparison, I found that whilst there was never a doubt Gene Hackman would get them out the first time, I didn't get that from Lucas & Russell, even though we all knew how it would end. Also lost half a star for the stunt casting of Fergie.
66
Paparazzi (2004,  PG-13)
Paparazzi
Never going to win any awards but it's always a bit of fun to see a bad guy get what's coming to him and not always to the letter of the law. Good to see Cole Hauser get a decent leading role and Tom Sizemore in something other than court or a mugshot.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The trilogy came home strong with another rollicking adventure in much the same vein as the original. The casting of Sean Connery as Henry Jones Sr was a masterstroke as was returning Denholm Elliott (Dr. Brody) & John Rhys-Davis (Sallah). The opening sequence featuring River Phoenix as the young Indiana Jones was fun to watch as we find out a little about how he came to obtain his passion for finding historical artifacts and making sure they are there for the world to see (not to mention the origins of his trademark hat & whip). What follows is a thrill ride through the catacombs of Venice to the Castles of Austria to the El Deir Temple of Alexandretta and beyond. Difficult to split this film from Raiders of the Lost Ark, probably due to the number of similarities, but that's what made this film great, returning to the formula that worked so well in the first, Indy vs The Nazi's in search for a religious artifact, something with a little historical accuracy to it rather than glowing rocks. All in all was best way imaginable to round out the trilogy. It will be interesting if the new film currently in production will carry on the legacy or destroy it.

Visually brilliant but all the CGI in the world couldn't save this movie from poor writing, poor acting and a nonsensical story. It's unfortunate because it had potential, but just fell flat. Also starting to look like Milla isn't going to escape this typecast anytime soon.

Queen of the Damned (2002,  R)
Queen of the Damned
I recently read a review that stated if you are a fan of Anne Rice's novels, stay well away from this movie, I disagree, though not entirely.
I saw this movie before I had read any of the novels, I guess like a lot of people, due to the hype surrounding it due to the tragic death of Aaliyah prior to its completion. On its own merits it's a very decent vampire flick, one of the best in recent years, but as a visual realization of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Lestat" & "The Queen of the Damned" it was lacking in probably too many ways.
It was too much to take on and squeeze into 100 minutes. One book would have been difficult enough to do to a level to please fans but tackling two was asking for trouble. There are changes to nearly every key character from the novel and some are omitted completely. Changes to the plot, key points cut out and others tweaked to make a coherent, studio friendly screenplay.
But, as I stated earlier, to truly appreciate this film you need to look at it from a completely removed standpoint. Michael Rymer did an excellent job creating a dark, gothic atmosphere whilst Jon Davis & Richard Gibbs did an amazing job with the score & soundtrack. Stuart Townsend was fantastic as Lestat as was Vincent Perez as Marius (even though they weren?t aesthetically as described in the novels, their portrayals of the characters were pretty spot on). My only real problem was Marguerite Moreau. Whilst she has been quite good in other things she has done, I found her frankly irritating and not overly likable as Jesse.
The only way to do justice to Anne Rice's novels would be to make each one as a mini-series, otherwise you end up editing out too many of the subtleties of what made these stories great.

Thirteen Ghosts (13 Ghosts)
Great settings, awesome make-up/costumes for the ghosts and a very decent story brought down by sub-par performances. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the film, first time director Steve Beck did a fantastic job creating a chilling & eerie atmosphere from pillar to post (as he did with his latter film Ghost Ship) but F. Murray Abraham seemed to be sleepwalking by comparison to some of his other work & it's difficult to see Tony Shalhoub as anything but Monk these days. Also, whilst I'm not really a fan of any sort of gratuity, was I the only one who in the end was kinda hoping that the ghosts would rip apart Shannon Elizabeth and be done with it? Well at least she's always got that promising career as a "celebrity" poker player...
112
The Guardian (2006,  PG-13)
The Guardian
Little bit paint-by-numbers, could see the ending coming after 20 mins but still an enjoyable movie. One of Kutcher's better performances though that's like saying Mary-Kate is the more talented of the Olson twins. I liked the little tribute to Clancy Brown's character in The Shawshank Redemption (both characters share the same name).
113
The Marine (2006,  PG-13)
The Marine
You know there's something wrong when during the big final action sequence, the chase, the big explosions, the hero vs the villan you completely lose interest. Was just so fake. Just like a really bad cartoon brought to life. John Cena just doesn't have that same charisma that Dwayne Johnson has that allows him to carry film no matter how poorly done it is.

Batman Begins
I was skeptical about this movie. After the abominations that were Batman Forever & Batman & Robin (they were just too much like a cartoon), I thought this would be another attempt to further destroy the brilliance of the first movie. Needless to say it exceeded any expectation I had. Christopher Nolan & Christian Bale have revived Batman on the big screen to enthrall another generation. Nolan returned to that gothic feel Of Tim Burton's original that made it & to a lesser extent Batman Returns, so engrossing.
