Straw Dogs (1971, R)
Bloody Sam webs an unnerving and near perfect psychological thriller. A film that deals with the rites of manhood, the qualities and attributes conventionally thought to be appropriate to a man, especially physical strength or guts, which David Sumner (impressive Dustin Hoffman) doesn't have of course, until the end, when he'll have to face his offenders and start a blooshed in order to preserve his life, wife and possessions. |

Targets (1968, R)
One of the most impressive and yet overlooked debuts. From Roger Corman's pupil Peter Bogdanovich, pulling off the job with the same guerrilla filmmaking techniques of his master, a very tight budget and shooting schedule. |

The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004, R)
No one hits rock bottom like Sean Penn, in a contained but powerful performance of a deeply disturbed man in a hopeless crusade to shake the foundations of the ever indifferent government. Intense, grief and shocking hidden gem in the same vein of the anti-hero and suicidal glory tale epitomized in classics like Scorsese's Taxi driver or Peckinpah's The wild bunch. |

Satanás (Satan) (2007, R)
One of the best movies that have come out of Colombia in decades. A shivering look at the dark side of three citizens and their judgement day. A disturbed vietnam veteran (hence the comparison to the american classic "taxi driver") A priest who is losing his faith, and a young working class woman are the trinity cornered and accused by a neglectful society and their own personal demons. Remarkable and relentless. |

Ms. 45 (1981, R)
Morbid and fun cult classic that shows the big apple's nocturnal agitation caused by a beautiful angel with a "death wish" m.o and a deep mental disturbance ala "repulsion". |

Edmond (2005, R)
William H. Macy plays with brilliance another lonely wanderer of the night, tired of his pathetic existence. if only Stuart Gordon had more talent behind the cameras, and the photography wasn't that bright. In the end, it's uneven, and the violence a bit cartoonish, but the strength of the piece is, of course, Mamet's dialogue and edgy situations, always compelling and deeply moralistic. |
