Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
A seminal neo-noir, one of the most powerful and violent psychologic dramas. Scorsese's master direction and Herrman's jazzy score bring a new meaning to god's lonely man...
2
Straw Dogs (1971,  R)
Straw Dogs
Bloody Sam webs an unnerving and near perfect psychological thriller. A film that deals with the rites of manhood, the qualities and attributes conventionally thought to be appropriate to a man, especially physical strength or guts, which David Sumner (impressive Dustin Hoffman) doesn't have of course, until the end, when he'll have to face his offenders and start a blooshed in order to preserve his life, wife and possessions.
3
Targets (1968,  R)
Targets
One of the most impressive and yet overlooked debuts. From Roger Corman's pupil Peter Bogdanovich, pulling off the job with the same guerrilla filmmaking techniques of his master, a very tight budget and shooting schedule.
Crafty and unique way of storytelling and montage (Sam Fuller did some uncredited dictations)
An intense motion picture that analyses our perception on violence, real and fictitious; and juxtaposes the lives of two men as an example of both. their own particular downfall, and how they converge in a thrilling third act.
Full of Bogdanovich's cinephilia all over, and two outstanding performances by the leads, the little known Tim O'Kelly and the immortal horror star Boris Karloff.

The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004,  R)
The Assassination of Richard Nixon
No one hits rock bottom like Sean Penn, in a contained but powerful performance of a deeply disturbed man in a hopeless crusade to shake the foundations of the ever indifferent government. Intense, grief and shocking hidden gem in the same vein of the anti-hero and suicidal glory tale epitomized in classics like Scorsese's Taxi driver or Peckinpah's The wild bunch.
5
Satanás (Satan) (2007,  R)
Satanás (Satan)
One of the best movies that have come out of Colombia in decades. A shivering look at the dark side of three citizens and their judgement day. A disturbed vietnam veteran (hence the comparison to the american classic "taxi driver") A priest who is losing his faith, and a young working class woman are the trinity cornered and accused by a neglectful society and their own personal demons. Remarkable and relentless.
6
Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) (One Against All) (1998,  Unrated)
Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) (One Against All)
Intense, visceral, raw. hard to digest and yet interesting existentialist tale of a god's lonely man, a troubledmind french butcher who will take what he conciders fair, no matter who falls on the way. director Gaspár Noe homage to Godard and Scorsese. not for the faint-hearted.
7
Ms. 45 (1981,  R)
Ms. 45
Morbid and fun cult classic that shows the big apple's nocturnal agitation caused by a beautiful angel with a "death wish" m.o and a deep mental disturbance ala "repulsion".
Too bad Ferrara's impossiblity to push further into psychological horror, instead he goes for sensationalism. The leap between the innocent and disturbed young girl and the vexatious, psychopathic avenger was a little too abrupt, but it has a crazy soundtrack and the atmosphere for itself is great, sinisterly kitsch.
8
Edmond (2005,  R)
Edmond
William H. Macy plays with brilliance another lonely wanderer of the night, tired of his pathetic existence. if only Stuart Gordon had more talent behind the cameras, and the photography wasn't that bright. In the end, it's uneven, and the violence a bit cartoonish, but the strength of the piece is, of course, Mamet's dialogue and edgy situations, always compelling and deeply moralistic.
