Incredibly well put together. Close to flawless.
20
Casablanca (1943,  Unrated)
21
City Lights (1931,  Unrated)
22
Touch of Evil (1958,  PG-13)
Touch of Evil
Janet Leigh should really stay away from motels.

Welles is fantastic, and the opening shot is spectacular. An engaging, exciting noir. I can't even imagine seeing the studio's release.

And I choose to think that Heston was playing a Mexican who happened to spend most of his time around gringos, and therefore had no accent.
23
The Third Man (1949,  Unrated)
24
La Dolce Vita (1960,  Unrated)
25
Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise) (1945,  Unrated)
Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise)
Large-scale romantic epic where the acting is the best part. Think Gone with the Wind, only with mimes instead of soldiers.
26
La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion) (1937,  Unrated)
La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion)
Good film, interesting commentary. It's a little too obviously didactic, but it's a practice for Rules of the Game a couple years later.
27
The General (1927,  Unrated)
28
Some Like It Hot (1959,  Unrated)
29
Breathless (À bout de souffle) (By a Tether) (1961,  Unrated)
Breathless (À bout de souffle) (By a Tether)
Could it really get any less than the full 5 stars? The 60's (and the rest of modern cinema) started here.
30
Psycho (1960,  R)
31
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.) (1950,  Unrated)
32
Persona (1966,  Unrated)
Persona
I have 'nothing' to say about this movie. Bergman's personal involvement with the actresses adds another layer of interest.

My favorite interpretation:

33
L'Avventura (The Adventure) (1960,  Unrated)
L'Avventura (The Adventure)
If only Natalie Holloway were Italian.
34
The Gold Rush (1925,  Unrated)
35
Chinatown (1974,  R)
36
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942,  Unrated)
37
Ordet (The Word) (1954,  Unrated)
Ordet (The Word)
One of the most moving - and certainly the most exhilarating - endings I've ever seen on camera. Yes, it takes a while to get going, but *wow*. This same story has been tried and tried and tried by direct-to-video evangelicals, but Ordet works where the others fail for two reasons
1) Dreyer believes enough - and is bold enough - to choose that ending
and
2) That ending really only hits home in the way that it did because of the realistic style. The camera never lies (you don't see phantoms, POV is consistent, no angles where things are hidden) and doesn't manipulate the emotions. (no close ups of people crying or lighted halos like in Dreyer's earlier Joan of Arc)

The combination means that we really believe. And that's what he was going for.
38
Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
39
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
40
Jules and Jim (1962,  Unrated)
Jules and Jim
Best example of the French New Wave I've seen.
41
Rear Window (1954,  PG)
42
The Seventh Seal (,  Unrated)
43
The Night of the Hunter (1955,  PG)
The Night of the Hunter
Poor, gullible Shelley Winters. She always seems to fall for exactly the wrong man. This movie has terrific atmosphere with a so-so plot. Robert Mitchum is a terrifying villain and I'm always a fan of expressionism.
44
Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
45
Le Mépris (Contempt) (2008,  Unrated)
Le Mépris (Contempt)
Godard is always frustrating for me. Contempt is almost 8 1/2, almost Avventura, almost Scenes from a Marriage and almost a great movie.
46
Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) (1959,  Unrated)
Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows)
Antoine is easy to relate to... Fantastic film.
47
It's a Wonderful Life (1946,  Unrated)
48
Andrei Rublev (1966,  Unrated)
Andrei Rublev
I'll confess - I'm never comfortable with the slow pace of eastern films. Rublev had some amazing scenes and set pieces, but not enough to tie them together into a cohesive whole. If you're going to take up 3 and a half hours, you need to be saying a lot more than Tarkovsky does in this film.
49
Intolerance (1916,  Unrated)
50
Ugetsu monogatari (1954,  Unrated)
Ugetsu monogatari
Amazingly shot. Repeat, amazingly.
51
M (1931,  Unrated)
52
Modern Times (1936,  Unrated)
53
Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries) (1957,  Unrated)
Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries)
Has Bergman done anything I don't love?
54
La Strada (The Road) (1954,  PG)
La Strada (The Road)
Brilliant in its own right, a fascinating look at the type of filmmaker Fellini would later become.
55
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
56
The Wild Bunch (1969,  R)
The Wild Bunch
Tarrantino's godfather.
57
Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road) (1955,  Unrated)
58
Rio Bravo (1998,  Unrated)
Rio Bravo
Very well-made western. Excellent acting throughout.
59
North by Northwest (1959,  Unrated)
60
Au Hasard Balthazar (1966,  Unrated)
Au Hasard Balthazar
I'm not a huge fan of neorealism, but I appreciate the economical, restrained style here. It's the only Bresson film I've seen. The ending is haunting, but even at only 91 minutes, it still takes a long time to get there.
61
The Wizard of Oz (1939,  G)
62
Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
63
The Mirror (2007,  Unrated)
64
Greed (1924,  Unrated)
65
Il conformista (The Conformist) (1970,  R)
Il conformista (The Conformist)
Could be the greatest work of cinematography I've ever seen. Vittorio Storaro's bumping to the top of my Netflix queue. The combination of that moving, long-take camera work with the depth of field and beautiful, surreal colors is so unique and dreamlike. It's tough to find comparisons - maybe Godfather meets Eyes Wide Shut?

This is a must-see, and I'm a little upset no one pushed me to watch it before now.
66
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander) (1982,  R)
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander)
Amazing how the same director can explore the same themes with the same tone and yet create starkly different films.
67
The Apartment (1960,  Unrated)
The Apartment
Fantastic everything
68
Nashville (1975,  R)
Nashville
Altman's take on America. What did you expect?
69
Metropolis (1927,  Unrated)
70
Pickpocket (1959,  Unrated)
Pickpocket
Raskolnikov is a much more interesting character than a donkey... I'm glad I gave Bresson a second chance.
71
Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) (1963,  PG)
72
Playtime (Play Time) (1967,  Unrated)
Playtime (Play Time)
Wry look at modern society. Doesn't feel as dated as it should.
73
The Earrings of Madame De... (Diamond Earrings) (1954,  Unrated)
The Earrings of Madame De... (Diamond Earrings)
You've read this story a million times, but this retelling is enjoyable thanks to the efforts of Ophüls's creative direction that's unique without calling attention to itself.
74
Letter From an Unknown Woman (1948,  Unrated)
75
Notorious (1946,  Unrated)
76
Pierrot le Fou (Pierrot Goes Wild) (Crazy Pete) (1969,  Unrated)

Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) (1968,  PG-13)
81
Journey to Italy (Viaggio in Italia) (Strangers) (The Lonely Woman) (1954,  Unrated)
82
Sherlock Jr. (1924,  Unrated)
Sherlock Jr.
Incredible timing - half a second too long or short on any of the gags, and they'd have fell flat. Buster Keaton was a genius.
83
All About Eve (1950,  Unrated)
84
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) (1972,  Unrated)
85
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962,  Unrated)
86
My Darling Clementine (1946,  G)
87
L' Année Dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad) (1961,  Unrated)
88
Bringing Up Baby (1938,  Unrated)
89
L' Âge d'Or (Age of Gold) (The Golden Age) (1979,  Unrated)
90
Barry Lyndon (1975,  PG)
91
Double Indemnity (1944,  Unrated)
92
Amarcord (1974,  R)
Amarcord
Beware of breasts!
93
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
94
To Be or Not to Be (1942,  PG)
To Be or Not to Be
"If I shouldn't come back, I forgive you what happened between you and Sobinski. But if I come back, it's a different matter."

I already knew Carole Lombard was a genius. Now I have to start YouTubeing Jack Benny.
95
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera) (1929,  Unrated)
96
His Girl Friday (1940,  Unrated)
His Girl Friday
Nobody talks fast in movies anymore.
97
Gertrud (1964,  Unrated)
98
On the Waterfront (1954,  Unrated)
99
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror) (Nosferatu the Vampire) (1922,  Unrated)
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror) (Nosferatu the Vampire)
Maybe its just because I was ancy when I watched it, but I didn't think it was all that great, even for 1922. This is more than half a decade after Intolerance, remember.
100
Broken Blossoms (1919,  Unrated)
