A Simple Plan (1998,  R)
A Simple Plan 5.0 Stars
An excellent film on the banality of evil. Paxton does an amazing job playing a man who, although the audience sees him do terrible things, never loses the audience's sympathy. Some classic moments include; the fake confession in Brent Briscoe's basement, Gary Cole showing up out of the blue, Bridget Fonda's Lady MacBeth, and Paxton's first touch of evil. Thorton is also great and Raimi shows he knows the right way to tell a dramatic story without kinetic camerawork, and yet use the camera in the most efficient way possible. A classic.

I Stand Alone (Seul contre tous) (1999,  Unrated)
I Stand Alone (Seul contre tous) 5.0 Stars
One of the most disturbing films ever made. Imagine if Travis Bickle was even more psychotic and french! Filled with nasty scenes, and the audience I saw it with were really afraid when the warning came up near the end. I loved the way Noe turned the conventional happy ending on it's ear with his downbeat, real happy ending.

Amazing debut from Nolan. Saw this at TIFF to much fanfare, the fact this had just been shot over weekends and was a welcome return to gritty, noirish cinema. Nolan seemed to disappear for a while after this, but he was just in preperation to kick my ass with Memento.

Long before The Number 23 came this interesting, but ultimately confusing film about the paranoia of a computer hacker who starts seeing 23 everywhere. It's apparently based on a true story, so I should probably see it again when I'm not nearly asleep in the theater.

Permanent Midnight (1998,  R)
Permanent Midnight 2.0 Stars
Saw this at TIFF and had to be at the theater by 9 in the morning. This is after working the 4 to midnight shift for years, so I didn't even know what 7 in the morning looked like unless I was still awake. But the movie sounded awesome, the biography of the writer of Cafe Flesh and Alf? Tell me where to sign up! Turns out I should've slept in.

Holy boring piece of crap! Went to TIFF to see this for Kevin McDonald, and granted he's funny, he's funny in everything, this is one turd of a film. A modern romantic fairy tale, that description alone should have had me running in pure terror.

Obvious symbolism and pretentiousness aside, this is one boring film. Though it was cool to see William Smith (the white one) in a film again.

Kichiku dai enkai (1997,  Unrated)

Oh what a sordid tale this film tells. One of the few films to gross me right out. After being bored for an hour, I was suddenly squirming in my seat an being appalled by the images being presented before me. However, after the screening the director won me over. After being attacked by some of the more puritanical folk in the audience he shrugged it off, asking why they stayed. The angrier they got, the more he seemed utterly confused about why they'd be so upset by a film. That was nice seeing someone shrug off the whiners rather than justifying what he makes to them. He said he wanted his film to horrify and made no bones about it. Impressive, so impressive that I bought the DVD when it came out, but I still haven't gathered the courage to watch it. Maybe the rating will go up when I do.

Dance with the Devil (Perdita Durango) (1997,  Unrated)
Dance with the Devil (Perdita Durango) 1.5 Stars
Boring. Went to see this because it was a follow up on one of the characters from Wild at Heart, but it couldn't be further in tone. Maybe I should see it again after viewing a lot more cult movies, but I remember sitting in my seat excited to see this, and by the middle being sunk into the chair waiting for it to end.

I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998,  Unrated)
I Woke Up Early the Day I Died 1.0 Star
I've never seen a filmmaker so proud of himself for making crap as when I saw this at TIFF. The wonderful thing about Ed Wood was he was genuinely trying to make a good film whenever he made a turkey, and it really showed and made his films really endearing, almost sweet. This turkey is made by a bunch of people who think they're better than the material... guess what, they're not.

Crappiness. If it wasn't for the shock moments in this film, it would probably be the most forgettable film of all time. What was it about again?

Tries so hard to be wacky and cultish that it is a sickening watch. Very disappointing.
