As far as i'm aware this was the first Ron Howard film I was ever exposed to back in the 90's when I first saw it. Personally I think Howard is rather a good director, but lets face it, he's definatly moved on to better scripts, because as fun as this is, it's bloody ridiculous.
As a massive Tom Hanks fan, I'll watch anything he's in and for the majority of the time, I'll enjoy it a lot. This film isn't any different. I can't help but enjoy his performances, they're always so much fun, and he really is a funny guy.
This film is about a fruit and veg distributer who goes through a break up and decides to return to an island he loved as a child. While there he falls out of a boat and is rescued by a mysterious woman. On returning to New York, he receives a phone call from the police saying they have picked up the woman. She doesn't speak at all to begin with but soon learns English after watching a couple of hours of tv. It is revealed to us that this woman is a mermaid very early on but for two thirds of the film, Hanks' character hasn't the foggiest idea about who the woman he has fallen for, truly is.
The plot is extremely stupid and just when you think it couldn't get any dafter, you are given the ending, which I have to say is one of the most surreal things i've ever seen. And what I don't like about the ending, is that is takes itself a little too seriously. I won't go into what exactly happens, but i'm sure it won't take a genius to work it out.
Hanks is as always, brilliant. Daryl Hannah is, in my opinion, a bit of an odd choice to play the mermaid but she does an okay job. I'm not exactly a fan of hers, so she didn't really impress. She just seemed to lack something throughout the film.
Eugene Levy is pretty funny. Watching him getting beat up every time he's on screen will make you laugh out loud.
John Candy is the highlight for me. As a kid I could never get enough of his films and even when he's only a supporting character he steals every scene he's in.
I can't say everyone will enjoy this. It's certainly a bit weird, but I think it's worth checking out once in your life. Just remember to suspend your disbelief and you should fairly enjoy it.

The 'Burbs
Classic film and very much a guilty pleasure for me. I loved this as a kid. It just had everything I wanted in a movie. And you really can't get much better than Tom Hanks in the starring role.
The film is about Hanks' character who wants to spend his summer holiday laying around the house doing nothing. Things don't go to plan when a couple of his friends, played by Rich Ducommon and Bruce Dern, become convinced that there is something very weird about a new family that has just moved in next door. Hanks at first tries to deny these allegations and puts it down to his friends' imaginations. But as strange things begin happening he and the guys take it upon themselves to uncover whatever it is that the family seem so secretive about.
Everything about this film is so funny. Right down to the very last second they are throwing things at you. And you must be seriously screwed up if you don't find it funny.
Hanks' character goes through different stages of emotional exhaustion throughout the film. Every time he thinks he may have found something to suggest they are up to something fishy, there is a reasonable explanation for it. Hanks is at his best at the climax of the film where everything has literally blown up in his face and he just wants to lock himself away and sleep. I loved it where he doesn't want to hang around for the paramedics to put him in the ambulance so he throws the stretcher in before following it shortly after. I think it's just the way he portrays the way that his character is feeling at the time. I've got to say I think there are not many bumps in Tom Hanks' career so it's hard to pick out the best, but for me, this is definatly a highlight.
Bruce Dern as a fellow concerned neighbour is just brilliant. He plays an ex-service man who is still a little wrapped up in army life. Together with Rick Ducommon's character, who's wife is away for the week, giving him free reign to do whatever he likes, the pair supply a heck of a lot of laughs. And it's these two that are unwavering on their opinions of the new family. As opposed to Hanks who some times just doesn't want to believe it.
Carrie Fisher makes a nice addition to the cast playing Hanks wife. She plays the concerned and disbelieving character as she doesn't think for a minute the family are capable of what they are being accused of. There always has to be that balance in a film like this and she does it very well.
Corey Feldman plays the teenager who has been left at home while his parents are away and under the instruction to paint the house. However, throughout the film you don't really see him doing much painting other than holding a can of paint or brush every so often. His character is constantly antagonising Dern's character and it is very funny to watch. It's very amusing when he's inviting loads of his friends over to witness his neighbourhood as it is much better than television as he claims.
I could watch this film over and over again. It's incredibly funny and even though you are aware of how the film will likely turn out, I just can't get enough of it. It's close to perfection in my eyes.

Mildly entertaining. It has funny moments but the ending was really sad. Usually with movies like this the dog survives. I was slightly surprised that he died.

I've always liked Meg Ryan as an actress but I really like her in this film. I know that her and Tom Hanks work well together even though you don't actually get to see many scenes with them both together bar about two which is a bit of a shame. But I liked that aspect of the movie. That they don't actually see much of each other throughout the film and it's only because of the boy they end up together. Good romantic comedy. I also have to mention Rosie O'Donnell. Although I don't tend to like her I have to say she really made me laugh in this, especially when she calls Annie a basket case. The way she says it is just classic. A decent film and a fun watch.

Very touching film. Definatly one of Tom Hanks' best performances.

Forrest Gump (1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
Another prime example of why Tom Hanks is just a brilliant actor. Another must see film for his collection. There really isn't much I can say that has not been said already. It's a brilliant film that I enjoy watching a lot. Everything about it is very touching and you feel for him the whole way through the film. It's sad and happy all the way through which the director has done really with. Because one minute your close to tears and the next you've got a huge smile on your face. I love films that can make you smile and cry at the same time. I takes a skilled director and a talented actor to be able to make you do that and in this film there is both.

I don't know why it's taken me this long to review this movie. I guess I forgot all about it which sounds daft because it really is an unforgettable movie. Everyone should see it at least once in their lifetime. Great performances from all the cast. Overall a really great enjoyable film.

Saving Private Ryan (1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
Excellent war film. The opening sequence is probably in the top 10 of best ever. It really is a stunning piece and is great to watch on it's own as well. The plot is excellent and really exciting and entertaining. Not completely cold, it shows a lot of hope as well. Tom Hanks gives a stunning performance and one to be proud of. Matt Damon is excellent. Little disappointed that Vin Diesel died quite early on but I guess it had to happen to someone. Jeremy Davies did a brilliant job and really impressed me. A must see war film for everyone even if you're not into war films.

You've Got Mail
Another decent romantic comedy from the Tom Hanks Meg Ryan pairing. I suppose they work pretty well together. The plot is decent and enjoyable. I did laugh quite a bit throughout it so it must have been slightly funny. I don't think I can say must else. It's a decent film. That's about it.

I think most people would find it hard not to be touched by this film. It's also hard to define one character from Tom Hanks' long career but this one is definatly up there with the best of them. I've even heard that this film makes guys cry as well so watch out, no one is safe. (Unless you don't have a heart, this is a good film to watch to find out). I recommend a box of tissues with this film. And this is coming from someone who doesn't cry all that much. This one has me going for ages. The performances from each of the actors are just stunning and after Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan is just amazing. Definatly one of the best performances of his career if not the best. I have to mention David Moore as well because he always gives an excellent supporting character in all the films he does. Maybe time for a leading role? I can't really say much else that has not been said already... It's a must see not matter what genre takes your fancy.

Road to Perdition
Another stunning performance from Tom Hanks. He never fails to deliver. Daniel Craig however failed to impress me but then again i never have been a fan of his. Tyler Hoechlin did a good job. Jude Law was great but nothing special. I don't think i'd want to watch this film again. Its one of those watch it once films.

Catch Me If You Can (2002,  PG-13)
Catch Me If You Can
Very entertaining film and because it is based on a true story it is even more enjoyable. It really does sound like a work of fiction and very unbelievable but it's not. And to make it even more astounding he was only 21. Leonardo DeCaprio plays the character wonderfully and Tom Hanks makes a brilliant frustrated FBI agent. A must see film. You won't be disappointed either.

The Ladykillers (2004,  R)
The Ladykillers
Not exactly one of the best films i have ever seen. Some parts were extremly laughable but not in the good sense. I have not seen the other one so i can't compare the two. But it was undoubtably one of the worst films i have ever seen. Not one that i would recommend. Lisa

The Terminal (2004,  PG-13)
The Terminal
The first time I watched this I think I gave it around two stars. I watched it again recently and think perhaps that I was a little harsh. Tom Hanks is brilliant as always and it must have been pretty hard to keep his accent consistent. I'll give him credit for that. I can't stand Catherine Zeta-Jones so basicly I hated her performance. I'll leave it at that. Diego Luna didn't really have that much screen time but i'm willing to watch anything he's in. His performance was short but sweet without trying to sound too cliched. The plot is good and there really is much else to say. It isn't Steven Spielberg's strongest piece of work but it's still a decent film that is worth at least one watch.

The Da Vinci Code
Apsolutly loved it. So original in every way. Everything i hoped it would be. Even the lenth of it didn't put my off even though i got a dead leg. It was worth it. This movie is a classic. People will be watching this movie for years to come and will still be loving it. All the controversy that this movie has caused is rediculas. I'm a catholic and i think that all Dan Brown did was raise some awareness on some questions that people have been asking for years.

Angels & Demons
Been looking forward to this film for a long time now. Can't say I was disappointed but I don't think it was quite as good as the da Vinci Code. Unlike most people I actually preferred da Vinci the book to the Angels and Demons book. I guess I just preferred the plot points that Dan Brown used in it. I love the subject matter of both books and have studied it for quite a few years as well.
I do have quite a few issues with this film that sort of hindered my viewing of it. I understand that when writing the screenplay, you do have to change things and cut things out, but I feel they went a little overboard with that on this project. There was just so much that changed that could quite have easily of been left in. I didn't like that they chose to ignore the fact that the Scientist who was killed in the beginning was actually her father. They didn't gain anything from leaving it out, they only lost what would have been a greater connection between the characters. Also that they decided that it would be good to add in the fact that if she got to the canister when it had more than five minutes of battery life left, she would be able to replace them. This was completely point as it's fairly obvious to anyone that she isn't actually going to make it in time, so why bother with that. In the book it was made very clear that even if they did find it, it was unlikely there would be enough time to get the canister back to lab to recharge the batteries. Stupid much, I think so. There was a lot more that changed as well but I won't go into it incase you haven't read the book.
I suppose if you are unfamiliar with the book then these things wouldn't be an issue at all and I don't see why you wouldn't find this film as enjoyable as the last.
Tom Hanks is brilliant as always. I love the guy so really can't fault him in anything he does.
Ewan McGregor annoyed me throughout. The guy should stop kidding himself about the accents. He just can't do them. His performance wasn't terrible. It could have been better. What would have been a good move, would be not to hire him for the character in the first place. I don't know why they thought he would be a good choice.
Although it has its faults, it's still worth checking out as it is a good summer blockbuster with loads of suspense and a great plot to it.
