No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
Edge-of-the-seat stuff from the Coens'. Really good premise, excellent attention to detail as always. Tense gun fights, very cool horrific deaths & the characters were all very interesting. Acting is all top notch, especially Javier Bardem.. Tommy Lee Jones just plays the same character in every film though right. Looses it's way slightly at the end but still an absolute joy of a film. I still think There Will Be Blood would have been a more deserving Best Picture winner & P.T Andersen Best Director, the Coen's come off as a pair of snobbish dicks sometimes. Bloody good though. |

Zodiac (2007, R)
Amazing attention to detail in both script & storyline. Ruffalo, Downey Jr & Jake.G are all outstanding. The relentlessness of the character's desire to find the killer is intense. Viper HD Cam looks great, as did the 70's looking tv broadcast. Fincher delivers another superb dark thriller, he's now 6 for 6 in my book. |

Gone Baby Gone (2007, R)
Very very good. I didn't even know it was directed by Ben Affleck, maybe he should stay behind the camera from now on because he did a great job on this one. Why the hell hasn't this film been recognised for any awards?! It's easy one of the best films i've seen this year. For the record i still think Mystic River (written by same writer) is crap, probably due to Clint Eastwood being a useless retard. Anyway, Gone Baby Gone is very good. Perfect pace, plenty of twists, impressive performances by everybody. Raises some important moral questions, filmed beautifully etc etc. A few sequences had me litterally on the edge of my seat. Great ending. There's been a spate of these intense 'missing persons' films lately, A Mighty Heart & Tell No One and Gone Baby Gone is as good as both of those. Quality film. |

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) (2007, PG-13)
Very touching story that kept me watching right till the end. The camerawork & editing give an excellent sense of being locked in someone's head. The scene where Jean Do's wife who obviously sill loves him is forced to converse between him & his mistress is outstandingly poignant and very well executed. Max Von Sydow's small part is powerful, he is a living legend. Quality filmmaking. |

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007, R)
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. A fascinating study of deceit & betrayal shot beautifully. Powerhouse performance by Affleck again, he is getting to be a darn good actor. Pitt also nails Jesse James. I do think however the voice-overs that cut in were too distractive in trying to spell out what was going on. It's slow yes, and long, but there are some intense situations and a satisfying ending. Great film. |
