This has to be one of my favourite films ever, no doubt about that. When I first walked into the cinema to see this, I knew I was going to love it.. but I had no idea I would enjoy this film as much as I did. It had that distinctive Tim Burton 'style' to it. Dark, mysterious, eerie, bloody and humorous. You could call this a mixture of genres.. obviously it is a musical, but it's just as much of a horror movie as it is a comedy.
Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd.. the demon barber of Fleet Street. A dark character that comes across as a revenge-seeking, sinister person. All you need to know about this plot is that Sweeney Todd was once locked away from his wife and daughter, and came back to London to seek revenge. After his first killing Mrs Lovett, played by Helena Bonham Carter, suggests using the flesh in meat pies. From then the story unfolds in itself, creating some unexpected plot turns and an outstanding end to this masterpiece. Tim Burton directs one of the greatest movies ever made, making it really his own. Another reason to see this is if you absolutely love Tim's style of movies, you will love Sweeney Todd.
Johnny Depp showed yet again how he is one of the best actors of his generation, and has proved to me why he is my all-time favourite actor. This was something completely different for him.. singing. I personally thought he was brilliant, the perfect actor with the perfect voice for Sweeney Todd. Seeing Helena Bonham Carter in this movie has made me admire her a lot more as an actress, she made her character certainly a lot more entertaining than I can imagine anyone else doing. She really made another stand-out performance for me. Alan Rickman was everything you would imagine his character to be, hitting some tunes and bringing a sinister feel to his character. Sacha Baron Cohen provided a couple of entertaining scenes, while Timothy Spall was just as you would imagine him to be.
I can't express in words how much I loved this film, but I tried. I would strongly recommend this to anyone, just be prepared that this is a musical. Other than that... enjoy!

One of the best films of the year in my opinion. It combines comedy with action and does it brilliantly. This is not one to be missed.
Sergeant Nicholas Angel gets transferred to a quite town of Sandford, where at first everything seems crime-related as the first night there he arrests a bunch of people. One of these them was Danny Butterman, his new partner and boss' son. It is only soon after Angel arrives that a series of murders occur and he is the only one in that village that is determined to find out who is responsible, as everyone else seems to think they are "accidents". So Angel and Danny team up and do all they can to find out who is responsible, delivering fantastic action scenes and hilarious lines.
Simon Pegg was brilliant in every possible way. His character was perfect for him and he just made it 100% better than anyone else could have done. Everything was just perfectly placed with an amazing script. The direction was superb, strange style but I really liked it. I'll definitely be checking out more of Edgar Wright's films. Please, if you haven't already - see this movie!

One of the best movies I've seen all year, and definitely one of the best fantasy films.
You'd be surprised at how many well known actors appear in this film, each playing a fantastic role. I must say that Robert De Niro was absolutely hilarious and perfect, as well as other names such as Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ricky Gervais (Yet another hilarious character) and of course Charlie Cox who was amazing as the main character.
This magical film is amazing in every way possible - it easily deserved the five stars.

This has to be, without a doubt, one of the best films of 2007. The Coen Brothers have again made their talent for film-making shine through this film. From the moment it starts to it's abrupt yet defining end, No Country For Old Men is a true masterpiece of a movie that should not be missed.
I can say for a start that it wasn't quite what I had expected it to be. I knew little about the plot and tried to keep an open mind while walking into the cinema, which was probably the best thing to be doing. It surprised me, but in the best possible way. From the little I knew, I thought it would be perhaps more of a drama film. Instead, it came out to me as a very well done thriller. There was also more violence than I expected, and it wasn't just it being bloody, but everything seemed very sudden. I saw these things as compliments to the movie, for I felt that without them it wouldn't have been the multi-award winning, brilliant film that it is.
Tommy Lee Jones was in the film for quite a bit less than I was expecting him to. Even so, his performance while on the screen was near perfection. Javier Bardem was... well, I can say that he 100% deserved that Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He created a terrifying and fearless character, his performance in this film is sure to be remembered. Josh Brolin was also another stand-out performance, as was all of the acting.
This is a must see movie that I strongly recommend anyone and everyone to see.

"I Need to know who he is. I need to stand there, I need to look him in the eye and I need to know that it's him."
Zodiac has proven to be one of the most astonishing and remarkable films I have seen in a long time, and certainly has made a spot on my favourite thrillers of all time. From start to finish, Zodiac is a chilling and fearsome movie that delivers chills and thrills throughout it's entire length, and manages to keep a mysterious and unanticipated ending.
Zodiac, based on true events, focuses on the serial killer in the San Francisco Bay area who called himself 'Zodiac'. Set in mostly in the '70s, this film captures the dark and unwelcoming events during the Zodiac's murders and case which still remains unsolved today. We can see from all points of view in this film, from witnessing the murders to the investigators and reporters somehow becoming obsessive with the case, and it's not long before the viewers soon become as captivated as the characters.
This film manages to maintain a high level of interest even throughout it's whole length of two and a half hours. It's not very often that I sit down and watch a movie and become as awestruck and mesmerized as I did in Zodiac, so that is certainly saying something. For me it was a film where it was impossible to take my eyes off of the screen, and although some (yet very little) parts were disturbing, I was still just as enthralled. Without my high interest in this film, I can understand that towards the end it might not have been quite as appreciated. As well as interest, you will need to pay attention to discover clues and find out how the case is progressing; otherwise I can guarantee that in the end you will be confused and therefore not value the overall film.
For me the cast were also brilliant and for the most of them, perfect for their chosen characters. Jake Gyllenhaal was incredible and gave a truly outstanding performance for his role, as did both Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. Zodiac has certainly made me appreciate these actors a lot more. Another honourable mention would have to go to Brian Cox; great actor, amazing performance.
Overall Zodiac is a film worth watching for movie lovers of all genres. Although this sits tight under thriller/mystery, this is a movie that should be seen by all; therefore I strongly recommend it.

Beautiful, memorable, unique, emotional and.. a masterpiece. I have never read the book so I can't compare it to the novel, I think that anyone who has read it would be satisfied with this. It's definitely one of the best movies of 2007, If it doesn't at least get nominated for an Oscar then there's something seriously wrong.
It was nice for Joe Wright and Keira Knightey to get back together in this film after 'Pride and Prejudice'. He is an amazing director and teamed together with some great actors it can't go wrong. I won't go into the plot in depth, it's hard to describe in words it's unique story, it's certainly like no other movie I have seen before. A series of events occur all because of an incident that happens at the beginning of the movie, when a young girl wrongly accuses a man of rape. He is sent off to war and all he can think of is a woman who he fell in love with the night he was taken away. The two have a slightly unusual relationship by sending letters with the hope of one day finally settling and having the rest of their lives together. Atonement is a really emotional film, and one scene in Dunkirk shows how tragic and full of chaos the war really was. That was a breathtaking scene, I was in awe of the directing and how so many things were happening at once. The setting of that scene was eerie and James McAvoy's performance showed the emotions anyone would be feeling at that time.
Keira Knightley was brilliant in this film, I haven't seen her in any other films like this so it was strange to see her in this role. In my opinion this is her best performance. James McAvoy, who I am not so familiar with also showed his amazing acting and made the movie a lot more emotional and memorable. Saoirse Ronan, who played the young Briony was brilliant for such a young age. Her character had a very important part in the story and she cave a great performance to create the atmosphere needed at the beginning of the film.
Overall this is a must see movie, a true drama film that should hold your attention from the opening credits until the very end.
