A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange 5.0 Stars
kubrick directs anthony burgess classic novel of troubled youth in britain, a great fantasy feel, even though set in a very present britain, as usuall kubricks fingerprints are all over this, his feel and direction, and especially photogenic camerawork all present, malcolm mcdowell, in his 2nd film after i.f is terific as alex the youth who is a bad seed indeed, a very influential film from movies to music videos, you see so many influences from the frames of this film, kubrick withdrew this from britain in early 70s and for many years not able to see it apart from a bootleg video, untill death in 1999 of kubrick, a very british film in its ways from a very american director, a classic

Doomsday (2008,  R)
Doomsday 4.0 Stars
how do you make a great futuristic action film with a message, just ask dog soldiers, the descent director neil marshall, get inspired by, 28 days later, madmax, aliens apocolypse now, braveheart, gladiatorand even the bad, postman, waterworld, robinhood, the future, scotland is hit by a virus, but gets so out of hand, the rest of the u.k and world turns its back, and blockades the country in, with a very inpressive wall, left to die, forgotton, 30 odd years later, in london, the virus reemerges, and its thought as there may be people running around in glasgow, a scottish city, a cure can be found before its too late, so a unit is sent in to find a man, who was working on a cure, played by malcolm mcdowell. and here starts a film full of susence action, gore, great set pieces, as once its known glasgow is not derilect, a mad group of outcasts living there life there way, dont make it easy, a great opening five minutes, setting up story, and situation, a litle charactor set up, and then set piece after set piece, one moment were in a future gone bad, and a little action later, were in medievil scotland, not literaly, but great seeing why this is, more set pieces follow, and more over the top violence, but great to watch, marshall really knows how to stage a set piece, wether its a action scene or party scene, this you gotta check out,,, anyone for a sean pertwee leg,, and the finalmadmax style chase will leave you breathless, if theres one flaw, its the use of south africa standing in for scotland, its so ovious, but the chase is still spot on, marshall, is a major talent, going directly oposite to last film the descent, a great example of how action films should be staged and executed

Rag Tale (2005,  Unrated)
Rag Tale 4.0 Stars
a fasinating look at fleet street, the newspaper district in london, set at one of the papers, simon callow, is a editor whos also having a affair with his boss wife who also works at the paper, and also in line with callow for promotion, while at same time a inportant piece about the royalfamily emerges, and conflicting interests arise as to wether they should run the story, so a little backstabbing emerges.
a great look to this film hand held and ery jerky, really takes you into the action of the office, topical debates brought up, which brings this film into todays world, malcolm mcdowell great as the boss after his own interests, and jennifer jason lee, great as the out of her depth american having the affair, confirms all we know and think about the tabloids, in the uk, really bad,

Halloween (2007) (2007,  R)
Halloween (2007) 4.0 Stars
interesting, rob zombie has made halloween his own, anyone who loves his work, house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects, will like this his grungy metal style is all intact, and also as i watched the original last week, im fresh on this, hes done a film that extends on the original, so we see more of michael as a child, more of him going bad as a child, and the warning signs to come, although the ending has been changed a bit, its more to it, but maybe not as good, a good watch, zombie brilliantly stageing deaths, which are quite gruessom, pretty good
