Funny Games (2008) (2007, R)
In a word; psychotic. I actually tried to find reasons not to like this film. And failed. Despite the fact I could go a long time until I next see this film, it is unescapably brilliant, leading you down familiar psycho-thriller paths, only to find out you might as well be walking upside down in the sky. Fantastic script and genius misuse of genre conventions means this is a compulsory watch. I'm just never answering my front door again. EVER. |

Iron Man (2008, PG-13)
Before I sat down and watched Iron Man, I conceded myself these truths. Although I was aware of the existence of said Man of Iron, I had never read a comic or graphic novel bearing his name. Also, I had to admit that I had not truly enjoyed a Marvel comic-film adaptation since X-Men 2. With that in mind, I was still excited about this movie. And it turns out I wasn't disappointed. Although at times I did find myself whispering "that's a rip-off of Batman", the story was very enjoyable and a nice piece of escapist cinema, with plenty of thrills, spills and kills essential for today's Summer blockbuster quota filler. Robert Downey Jr. steals the show in the lead, even if the supporting cast are so-so. Marvel Films should be very proud of this debut, and I look forward to their forthcoming releases, and the next instalment of Iron Man. |
