Batman Returns (1992, PG-13)
I was relieved, that when I saw this movie, I was immediately able to recognize Burton's gloomesque handwriting. While his touch for dark poetry did not truly shine in the first movie (except for the sets), his direction takes a step deeper down into Burton-land, being darker, grittier and more playful than the first movie. Furthermore, the female lead outhshines the plastic Basinger from the first movie, with Michelle Pfeiffer walking the fine line between caricature and seriousness, being sexual without being too glossy. Danny DeVito seems to been born to play the Penguin and adds a lot of depth to the character, managing to render it grtoesque instead of simply disgusting. Michael Keaton put on a bit of edge but is sill not a perfect choice for Batman. Always nice to see Christopher Walken, although he plays pretty much himself here (as he does in all his movies). And thank god the movie let go of trying to emulate the decade it was made it and we are spared too many glimpses of the 90ies in costume, set design, makeup or cast. Storywise, I found that the connection between Catwoman and the Penguin was highly underdeveloped and felt a bit forced, I could neither grasp their motivation to work together or fight each other. This however was primarily due to the fact that Catwoman in herself was pretty much lacking any villanious motivation instead of being generally confused. |
