The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
"Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the fellowship of the ring."

I remember sitting in the cinema when this film had ended and being absolutely gutted that the film had ended and the second wouldn't be out for another year or so. Since then I've seem it numerous times and still absolutely love it.

This is a fantastic start to a complete masterpiece of a trilogy. Everything about this film works. The dozens of awe inspiring shots of the New Zealand landscape that create Middle Earth in the fellowship of the ring just sum up how breath taking this film is. Visually, the film is stunning, and not just the location. The special effects are very realistic and the make up of the orcs and urak hai are incredible.

The soundtrack also deserves a mention because it is the most dramatic, powerful and atmospheric since John Williams' music for Star Wars. The action scenes are also fantastic. Films similar to Lord of the Rings often try and make the battle scenes too fast and you're left watching a load of blurs and a fumbling of arms, but the pace of the action is spot on. As well as the magnificent action scenes there is also humour and a couple of tear jerkers that are done so well and just add to the non stop entertainment of the film.

It's difficult to pick out one actor who really shines because they all give the performances of their lives. Even Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom who normally irritate me are impressive.
This is such an awesome film, it may be long but there is never a dull moment, and nothing is dragged on for too long, the length was neccessary otherwise it would have been too rushed. A true masterpiece of a film.

Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
When I first went to the cinema to go see this I had no idea what it was about really. It turned out to be an amazing film. Captain Sparrow and Captain Barbosa are great representations of pirates! A funny and exciting film with a story-line that is easy to understand and get involved in.

The Terminator (1984,  R)
The Terminator
"You still don't get it, do you? He'll find her. That's what he does. That's all he does! You can't stop him. He'll wade through you, reach down her throat, and pull her fucking heart out!"

By far one of my favourite action films of all time. This is an absolute classic. The film that made Schwarzenegger the action icon he is today.

The plot and idea is original and at the same time pretty damn scary and it's executed brilliantly. The pace of the film is perfect and there are some great action scenes. The soundtrack also deserves a mention because at times it really does make the moment so much more tense and full of suspense.

I'm sure only Arnie could play the role of the terminator, his emotionless and deadpan portrayal is pretty good at creating fear and also some humour. Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn also both give very real and convincing performances. Some of the special effects are a bit dated now, particularly the robot at the end, but that doesn't stop this being an all time classic. An absolutely awesome film.

Alien (1979,  R)

Resident Evil (2002,  R)
Resident Evil
I absolutely love this film. The action, horror and storyline are awesome. I think the fact that it is set underground makes it so much more terrifying as it brings that feeling of claustrophobia. The fast pace and jumps in this film will also keep you on the edge of your seat. Brilliant film.

Saw (2004,  R)
Saw
Lots of people told me this was a good film, but I never expected it to be as brilliant as it is. Some of the scenes make you cringe and the twist at the end was completely un- expected, before that I hadn't really payed attention to the guy lying on the floor.

The Matrix (1999,  R)

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
I think this is probably my favourite star wars film. It still has the amazing plot and fantasy to it but the special effects and lightsaber battles have improved so much. Although you've just got to love the puppets I think special effects helped the film a lot, and the lightsaber battles are so much quicker, believable and have more emotion than in the old films. The pod racing was brilliant and actually built a lot of suspense, and the new characters are a lot more enjoyable and can also be enjoyed by younger ages now, mainly because of the clumsy Jar Jar Binks. Darth Maul is an incredibly cool character and I would watch the film, literally just to see his battle at the end.
