Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 5.0 Stars
What can I say this is a wonderful movie. This is what Star Wars is all about. The characters. Not the special effects. I also think that the relationships in this movie whether between Luke and Leia, Han and Leia, Han and Lando, Luke and Yoda, work perfectly.

I cannot think about this movie without discussing the director Irvin Kershner, who's unique style and wonderful vison completely add to the grandure of the Star Wars universe. I will say it now, and I will say it again, one of the best things to ever happen to Star Wars was Kershner.

The development of the love story between Han and Leia is so great that I cannot even describe it. I just really felt that they were falling in love.

The special effects, also, are a great improvement from "A New Hope". That combined with a perfect story and a stunning revalation about Luke's father, make this one of the best things to ever happen to cinema. Perfect sequel.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007,  PG)
Bridge to Terabithia 5.0 Stars
It is hard to put into writing just how marvelous and wonderful Bridge to Terabithia really is, yet as I attempt it, I can't help feeling disturbed at how ridiculous people are being about the marketing of this film. I just can't understand why some people find it okay to rate a movie based only on it's advertising. It is basically the same as rating a movie after watching only the preview. Ridiculous! Thank goodness most real critics have looked past the agreeably deceptive marketing, into the heart and beauty of this film, which, with or without the misleading advertisements is impressive. After seeing it, I struggled to think of a better way of marketing this film, without giving away its ending or taking away the only audience that still seems to watch PG movies, kids.

After watching it, however, I couldn't imagine taking anyone under ten to see it, nor could I imagine anyone under ten enjoying it as much as young adults, or even older audiences would. So, as deceptive as the advertising was, I myself realize that the fascinating story, the charm and skill of the actors, and the good direction of newcomer to live action film-making, Gabor Csupo, more than makes up for the slightly skewed first impressions. And I am eternally grateful that it did not turn into what everyone seemed to want, a cheesy Narnia rip-off. If anything, the movie was a lot better than the preview made it seem to be, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Instead of the brash and rude approach to filming movies, that seems to be the standard today with effects-driven movies, Terabithia focuses on the characters, the story, and the heart when telling this beautiful tale. Which, is part of the reason why I enjoyed it so much. Too often now days the story is built around the effects, not around the characters. A rather cumbersome and annoying way to tell a story, or be told a story, if you ask me. Instead, Terabithia uses the talents of both the amazing young actors, and its adult cast to enthrall and absorb the viewer in the magic of imagination and the reality of every-day life.

The story focuses on young Jess Aarons, whose school life and home life aren't all that ideal. He deals with bullies at school, and four sisters at home. Josh hutcherson, who I haven't particularly enjoyed before, plays the part of Jess perfectly, his emotions and reactions spot on, throughout.

What is a school without the new girl? Leslie Burke, played by AnnaSophia Robb, takes on the part of imaginative and friendly new girl and brings to Jess gifts of imagination and friendship. Robb truly does a superb job in bringing to life the thoughtful and imaginative Leslie Burke.

All of the supporting cast was also brilliantly portrayed. I especially enjoyed the performances of Robert Patric as Jess's father, and young Bailee Madison as Jess's little sister May Belle.

Together, Jess and Leslie create a world to call their own. A place that no one else can get to, a place in their imaginations. Terabithia, a land of beautiful creatures and dangerous enemies, springs forth from their imaginations, and becomes a place to call their own, away from the bullies and monotony of everyday life.

What really struck me as brilliant was the limited, yet still perfect number of glimpses into the childrens' imaginations. We don't see a lot of Terabithia, which is good, because it is more about the journey of the characters, than the land of Terabithia. That said, it still has quite a few more scenes of advernture that the book by Katherine Patterson, all of which add to, not take away from the story.

The writing, also is quite good. David Patterson, son of the novel's author takes great care when adapting the beloved work of his mother into a screenplay. Most of the lines from the book aren't there, but there are a few which make it in, revealing the care and love that was put into the scripting of this movie. Personally, I enjoy the screenplay of the movie more that the words of the book, but that is just my opinion. The movie's script greatly aided in the believability of the characters, and the motion of the scenes, where were crisp and well-planned.

The movie touched on my every emotion, bringing me to tall peaks of happiness and leaving me teary-eyed and disconsolate, but still had a perfect and satisfying ending. I also, personally thought, the scenes and situations were more powerful, poignant, and realistic, than the book, which surprises me. Usually, the movie can't live up to the book. In this case, the phrase seemed switched around. The book didn't live up to the movie. As weird as it is for me to say this about a movie, Terabithia touched my heart like no film has ever before. And I doubt any film will give me quite the same feeling, ever again.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 4.5 Stars
One of the most encouraging movies to ever come out. A movie that inspired new technologies and new ways of thinking about movies. Star Wars: A New Hope is a brilliant example of what a Star Wars film should be, with a wonderful plot, an introduction to all of the lovable characters, and top-notch special effects (for the release).

Simply amazing! This movie is why I fell in love with the Star Wars universe. The story is so perfect I can't help but love every minute of it. The sound design is really well done. I especially like the cockpit voices and the ship and lightsaber sounds. Again, John Williams amazes me with a beautiful score.

Sure, it is cheesy sometimes, and Mark Hamill sometimes whines a little, but I think he really needs to act this way, or the transition of him to Jedi wouldn't have been so noticable.

The end battle is one of the best I have seen in my life. It still really looks great, and I am always amazed at how it was made. I am in wonder of the brilliance that came out of the mind of George Lucas. A classic movie.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds (Kaze no tani no Naushika) 4.5 Stars
"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" is another wonderful film by director Hayao Miyazaki, full of wonder, love, and action. It is also one of his first movies, yet still is every bit as good as his later titles "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke". The stories that Miyazaki comes up with never cease to be amazing, beautiful and touching. A masterpiece.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002,  PG-13)
The Count of Monte Cristo 5.0 Stars
This is a great movie. I think that it is really one of those great examples of good pacing in cinema. I found the pacing to be near perfect, which really adds to the enjoyment of the film.

I also love the movie because each separate part of it is so good in its own right. Whether it be a before jail scene, a jail scene, escape scene, love scene, and of course a revenge scene, they all are wonderfully done. A real treat to watch a movie in which every single part is just as brilliant as the part before it, even though they are completely different types of scenes.

I also really enjoy the casting, which I thought was really well done. James Caviezel plays a wonderful Dantes and Guy Pearce the perfect villinous friend Mondego. Dagmara Dominczyk also fit her role very well. Job well done from all of the cast members.

So, top that all off, with a brilliant story written by Alexandre Dumas and adapted by Jay Wolpert for screen, and you have a most excellent movie.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 4.0 Stars
While the direction is not as well done and not as fluid as the other movies in the trilogy, it still is a wonderful edition to any movie collection. It completes the story of the fall of the emperor and more importantly the redemption of Anakin Skywalker.

The special effects are improved from the fifth movie by some. The lightsabers look really brilliant in this movie. The sound design is just as grand and impressive as the other movies, adding wonderfully to the superb score by composer John Williams.

This movie really gets in deep with the characters in the movie, and we see new emotions from all of the main cast. I really enjoy Mark Hamill's performance in this movie, which, I think has improved from his in the last picture.

I didn't particularly like how the ewoks were so efficient at taking out the trained imperial legions, but it can be forgiven as far as I am concearned. The ending is just perfect, it really serves as a wonderful topping to the dessert of Star Wars.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954,  G)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 5.0 Stars
My favorite musical of ALL time! This movie is wonderful. The songs are brilliant and fun. A lot of musicals don't have fun songs. This one has songs, that I like to sing along to. Newsies is also a very good one.

I love Howard Keel, he is the perfect Adam. I will have to forgive him shaving his beard off, because he was trying to get a wife. He looks way better with a beard, but that is okay. The rest of the brothers are also amazing, and sadly they shaved for the women as well. Oh well, tis still marvelous.

The barn fight is the best thing ever. This movie is so dang fun, I cannot even describe it. I just have a fun time when I watch it. I love every minute of it except Millie's songs, I just midly/slightly admire them. Oh well, she only has like two songs. Great movie though.

Ron Howard and Russell Crowe back together, proving yet again that they make the perfect combination. I gotta say, I loved this movie and prefer it to both Rocky and Million Dollar Baby, due partially to the fact that Ron Howard is an amazing director and Russell Crowe a wonderful actor.

I must say that this is the best boxing film out there. It is just wonderfully done, I can't fathom just how good a job Ron Howard does at making these stories come to life.

I was really interested in the movie the whole way through. The ending a little predictable, yet it still kept all of the intensity and the awe all the way until I was sure that was how it was going to end. Good movie.

A Beautiful Mind (2001,  PG-13)
A Beautiful Mind 5.0 Stars
I am in awe at what a wonderful movie that this really is, Ron Howard truly is a brilliant man, and Crowe also stunningly magnificent. I haven't seen a film come out in recent years that I have truly believed was worthy of the coveted "Best Picture" title, but this film is one of the most deserving films to ever grace our lives. Why Crowe didn't win an oscar for this movie is beyond me. Though, I do agree with the wonderful decisions to give the awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best director to both Jennifer Connelly and Ron Howard, who both did superb jobs with this movie.

It just is one of those stand out movies that really mean something. Movies that aren't there simply for entertainment, but really enrich and elevate us to new heights. I must say, I am very impressed with it. The way that the direction is done, is subtle, yet very poignant. I cannot even imagine the care that went into this film, but it is very apparent when I watch it that everyone loved making this movie. Beautiful.

What an amazing transfer from book to screen. It is one of the most caring adaptations I have ever seen in my life. It kept all that it needed, and got rid of the unecessary, keeping all of the love and care that was put in the book by Sachar.

The casting is superb. Sigourney Weaver makes a perfectly tough and harsh Warden. Jon Voight is the definition of "Mr. Sir". Newcomer Shia LeBeouf plays a terrifec Stanley Yelnats the Fourth. The rest of the cast is equally as brilliant, and make the movie a spectacle.

Amazing!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 5.0 Stars
Safe to say, this is one of the best movies ever made. There is no way someone can purposely make a classic, yet classics are born, and this is surely one of the most amazing classics around. It is one of the few truly inspiring stories to be created by the film industry.

James Stewart is really one of the best actors ever born, and in this film he brings nothing but greatness to the story. The story is amazing, and Mr. Smith played by Stewart is also amazing.

Seriously, if you haven't had the undeniable pleasure of watching this film, you are missing out big time. It is one of the movies that will forever be a classic, and will forever be one of the great films of the twentieth century.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936,  Unrated)
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town 5.0 Stars
"Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" is a classic Frank Capra film that is both entertaining and heartwarming. I enjoyed every minute of this flim and would recommend it to anyone, anywhere, anytime. My heart grows very sad whenever I think that this great movie was remade by Adam Sandler, who, no doubt ruined it. I don't want to see his version of it, because I like the memory of this film, and I am sure Sandler would ruin it for me, just like he sucks away all of the happiness out of any film he does.

This version of the film is just inspiring, it is perfect in every way. They don't make films like this anymore, partly because of all of the imbeciles who think that Adam Sandler is funny, and partly because the world has moved so far away from anything wholesome, this kind of movie rarely pops up. But, even when a good wholesome film pops up today it can hardly hold a candle to the old classics.

This movie has a great story, it has wonderful characters, and like all of Capra's films, a great script. It just seems to me that if we were still making films like this, I wouldn't have to rent a classic every time that I want something decent to watch. I know that there still are many great movies out there today, but can they really compare?

Planet of the Apes 4.0 Stars
This is a very powerful film in it's own right. Sure, the apes look really fake, especially when they talk, but it is the great story, the views of mankind, and the powerful ending that make this movie wonderful.

This film really has a good impact as it explores the stubborness of mankind through the obstinate views of the apes. I haven't seen a film in a long time that dug so deep into the world of mankind and the veiws of a more primative man. That in its own way made this movie great, but the ending was also incredibly powerful. Charton Heston plays the role of the "intelligent" human really well.

It is just a very impacting film, that really gets you to think about society. I would recommend that everyone see this movie. It doesn't deserve to be shunned by anyone.

Strings (2004,  PG)
Strings 4.0 Stars
One of the most unique films that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. The cinematography is beautiful, and the story equally as wonderful. It was a real surprise to see such a brilliantly done film, and the whole thing is done with marionettes.

The thing that really struck me as wonderful was the near-perfect incorporation of the strings in the storyline. They wern't just there, they were part of the storyline. Although doing a movie with all marionettes is a great idea, and a lot of times the strings looked beautiful and perfect, sometimes the strings would get in the way of the action of the scenes. This was very apparent when trying to do fight scenes, and the strings would sometimes get in the way. But this didn't happen often enough and it wasn't severe enough to interfere with the amazing story.

It is just wonderful to see something that really stands out from the rest of the movies out there, and this movie does just that. I definitely recommend that everyone should watch this movie at least once.

Cast Away 4.5 Stars
This film is really one of the greater films in the past decade. I was really surprised by how much I really did like it. I haven't seen to much of this type of trapped on an island movie, but I thought it was simply exceptional.

Tom Hanks is trapped on an island, and it is our job to see how he is going to survive. When was the last time, you really fell in love with an inanimate object on screen? Well, this is the first time for me, and probably the last. I simply loved it.

It is perfectly awkward when Hanks has to go back to his life, to see what happened while he was gone. It is awkward, and yet just as it should be. The ending is very hopeful. It is just an all around good film from Zemeckis.

The direction in the movie is unprecedented, every shot, every emotion, every moment conveys itself on-screen flawlessly. The acting is quite wonderful, the characters belivable all the way through. But, I do think that the ending seems a little sudden making the whole story seem a little rushed at the end. The part I really hated, however, was the return of Robbie at the end of the film...how did he live? I will never know. I thought it was a cheap ending in that respect, but other than that a wonderful movie and one definitely worth watching time and again. Spielberg at his best.

The Great Escape 4.5 Stars
A film dubbed "classic" that actually stand's up to it's name. This movie is really one of the better films that I have seen in a long time. What is simply amazing about it is plain and simple, the story, which I hear is a true one.

Now, I don't know much of what the real events were really like, but I do love the rendition that is made in this film. It brings together the efforts of all of the prisoners, using all of their talents to pull off a truly great escape. I just loved watching them pull of the whole deal. When something goes wrong, I really felt tense.

I liked all of the different characters and thought they all performed excellently. Without the difference in characters this movie wouldn't have worked, but they really did pull it off.

Though it does seem to drag on for a while, as soon as they really started the preparing for the escape, I really didn't seem to notice that much. I don't know how they did it, but they really pulled off a film that I would consider a time-less classic.
