Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen)
This film holds the honour of being the 2nd (of many) anime films I've endured and have actually really loved. (The other one is Grave of the Fireflies). This is a genuinely heartbreaking at times piece of anti-war-art. It has compelling characters and doesn't shy aware from the horrors of war.
The animation sucks as is the case with most anime, but I am a firm believer that animation is just gloss. A film can't be made or broken by it, just enhanced. This film is good enough for it's quality to shine through in spite of the animation.
It's fantastic. 2nd best anime movie I've ever seen.

Ratatouille (2007,  G)
Ratatouille
Absolutely fantastic. This rates right up there with Toy Story as Pixar's best work. The animation is astoundingly beautiful and detailed, the comedy is generally subtle yet funny all the same, the story is full of heart and structured practically perfectly and yeah. It's a near-perfect film.
12
Futurama: Bender's Big Score (2007,  PG)
Futurama: Bender's Big Score
Dissapointing if I'm honest. The plot is above average but not really movie-quality, except for the subplot which is good, the animation is fit (and widescreen, woo!), the music and voice-acting and everything else are bang on par, but frankly, it's not very funny. I sniggered alot but there were no belly-laughs. That said, how clever this film gets with it's time travel and the fantastic twist at the end all make up for it if you persevere. It's not as good a movie as the greatest TV show ever deserves, but we have at least 3 more to look forwards too, hopefully they'll get better. That said, it still rocks.
13
The Simpsons Movie (2007,  PG-13)
The Simpsons Movie
Felt like it was lacking something, but a really enthusiastic and well pulled off movie. Hilarious, and considering they've done everything, has a fairly original plot. South Park remains the best movie adaptation of a TV show, but yeah, this rocked.
14
WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
Absolutely brilliant, but did you expect anything less from Pixar? This is one of my 3 favourite Pixar films, the other two being Ratatouille and Toy Story.
I'd say Toy Story is the best, but honestly, I'd have to rewatch it to give a fairer judgment on it. I recently saw Toy Story 2 and it wasn't as brilliant as I remembered it being (seeing as I saw it when I was 9 I think).
The animation in this film is incredible. Pixar achieved near-photo-realism on inanimate objects in Cars, and this is 2 films up from that. It's really quite special.
But of course, it's not about the animation, it's about the film itself and the plot is fantastic as well as a wonderful little satire about the world. Humanity is restored to the human race by a robot, something completely un-human.
It's funny, endearing and just pretty much perfection on film.
I don't think there's much I can say about this other than it's brilliant.

The Incredibles (2004,  PG)

Persepolis (2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
One of the most moving films I can remember seeing. A lovely little poignant affair and it's hand-drawn animation for adults that isn't emulating that exact same style that all anime is in! Yay!
It's a wonderful coming of age story about a somewhat unique main character who's life also serves as an educational exploration of cultures as well as human beings in general.
Basically, it's bloody good.

Futurama: Bender's Game (2008,  Unrated)
Futurama: Bender's Game
A little slow to start, but once it gets going it's a really good slice of Futurama. It's either mildly funnier than The Beast With a Billion Backs or I've just worn out the humour in The Beast With a Billion Backs by watching it so many times, either way it's close. And that means, it's WAY funnier than Bender's Big Score.
Plot wise, Bender's Big Score remains the most satisfying simply because of it's movie-sized scope (time travel and the whole Leela/Fry thing). However, the plot here is more cohereant as a movie and feels the least like episodes strung together out of all of the films despite the chunks being obviously different -I think it's because they naturally progress into one another so well.
Ultimately, it's more Futurama and it's good stuff. Probably the second best movie so far overall, but it's a tough call.

I am really quite dumb-founded by the mixed reviews this film is getting. I love it. It's far from perfect but there's so much to love. The visuals are not only gorgeous but really inventive too... such of the imagery is insanely good. Most complaints seem to call the film's plot and characters shallow. I couldn't disagree more. The characters each embody a certain aspect of the soul they were created from, this makes sense. Some are likeable whilst some aren't, no problems there. The plot is fantastic and has a lot of depth. Not only is the whole 'humanity is extinct' thing cool, but it's a genuinely interesting exploration of humanity on a philosophical level. The machine 'villain' that essentially destroys the world represents human intelligence (it's built from the scientist's own mind after-all) without a soul to guide it and ultimately ends up a thing of evil. There's lots going on.
Certain aspects don't quite work but more than enough does for it to be furiously enjoyable. Plus, it's always brilliant to see animation that isn't aimed at children. Thanks to the film's 12 rating, it didn't have to shy away from showing that humanity was extinct. Dead bodies and bits of skeletons and so forth are somewhat abundant. A very good film in my opinion, certainly dicks all over Coraline which people have been bumming all year despite not being that impressive beyond visually.

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs (2008,  Unrated)
Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
Futurama: Bender's Big Score was hardly funny at all. However, it's plot was absolutely fantastic and the amounts of emotion it reached is worthy of recognition alone. Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs is hilarious. Not quite as funny as the show was, but it's certainly close enough so that I don't care. However, it suffers in the plot department. There's nothing wrong with the plot, infact it's charmingly and bizarrely quirky, however, it doesn't feel like a movie-quality plot-line and it also feels much more disjointed than the first film. Whilst the first film could very clearly work as 4 to-be-continued episodes, it also worked fairly flawlessly as a movie. This film never feels like anything but 4 back to back episodes. However, it's still furiously entertaining and who cares if it's not important to the overall Futurama plotline. Only a small handful of the show's episodes actually are and this is 1 of 4 films.
It's not quite as good a film as Bender's Big Score, but it's WAY funnier. Hopefully the next 2 films will be this funny with a plot as good as Bender's Big Score, but we'll have to wait and see.

Hilarious, the parodies are spot on, the animation is suprisingly quite beautiful and it's actually got a very good, strong plot. Easily the best thing to come from The Fairly OddParents.

The Plague Dogs (1982,  PG)
The Plague Dogs
It's a very sad story about a couple of dogs just caught up in something they have pretty much no control over. It's proof that main characters aren't always in control of things in Western narratives -something that a tutor at my film course believes and I don't.
Anyway; the animation is lovely. And the art style closely resembles the book it's based on which is nice. The voice work isn't anything special, but there's nothing wrong with it. John Hurt makes a nice loveable doggy at any rate.
It's a very visual story, with most of the dialogue being human phone calls or news reports on the TV simply played over footage (well, animation) of the dogs.
So yeah, very sad and quite a moribund feeling throughout, but more meaningful for it and good all the same.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009,  Unrated)
Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder
I think this is possibly the first Futurama anything that I haven't loved. I only like it... and frankly that breaks my heart.
I'm hoping that I'll change my mind when I give it a re-watch.

I honestly loved all 3 other Futurama movies. The first one was the best and the only one I'd consider "movie quality". The other 2 were very messy in terms of movie-structure, but I still enjoyed them as much as I'd enjoy watching 4 episodes of the show back to back. This one just leaves me uneasy.

This film suffers from a problem that the first (and best) movie has. It's not very funny. However, Bender's Big Score had a brilliant plot and a hell of a lot of heart which made up for it's comedic shortcomings. Whilst this film is probably mildly funnier, it lacks a satisfying plot, many of the jokes are Family-Guy-ish and often really out-of-character. On top of that, whilst it sort of finalises the ongoing Fry/Leela thing, it just crams it in in the final minutes with only one 2-minute scene setting anything up between them. In short, it just comes out of the blue and as fans of the series who know their history, we're expected to take it.

And whilst not as bad as The Beast With a Billion Backs or Bender's Game, the structure still is clearly that of a movie written to work as 4 to-be-continued episodes of a TV show as well.

The VERY ending of the film is great. It's basically the reverse of the self-referencial opening to Bender's Big Score about how they'd been uncancelled. However, it'd be a crying shame if they ended the film on what is probably the weakest Futurama anything ever. I hope to God they get another season commissioned or at least a theatrical movie so they go out on a real bang. Thankfully though, going by sales of these films and interviews with the likes of David X. Cohen and Billy West, I think the show's return is very likely.

Don't get me wrong, this film is enjoyable. I just expected more. Even bad Futurama is better than pretty much everything else.

Personal enjoyment: 8/10 (I gave the other three 9)

When the Wind Blows
Works as a chilling companion piece to looking back at the old "Protect and Survive" leaflets and such. If you actually go back and look at that cold-war history, it's mad. They pretty much designed stuff to make things easier for the body clean up afterwards.

Anyway, nice animation, though a rather odd directorial decision with the mixing of live-action sets and footage and stuff.
It works in a similar way to those BBC4 radio dramas or monologues by that annoying guy who's name I forget. It's extremely British, but it's very endearing and yeah. Good.

South Park: Imaginationland: The Movie (2008,  Unrated)
South Park: Imaginationland: The Movie
This was not a theatrical-standard film, but given that it's essentially 3 episodes of the show stuck together and released straight-to-video, it's absolutely fantastic.
Funny, smart and well, imaginative.
It doesn't work quite as well as a film as it does as episodes but that said, you could do a lot worse: Family Guy's movie was also 3 episodes stuck together in a similar fashion and that was a horribly disjointed piece of poop.
This is a TV-quality epic and the best thing South Park has done in its last 3 seasons.

The Batman/Superman Movie (1998,  PG)
The Batman/Superman Movie
Here is a crossover movie that actually works. It's not an incredible piece of film by any means, but it's damn fun and that's all it's meant to be.
It's basically an extremely good episode of the Batman or Superman cartoon series extended over a feature-length without outstaying it's welcome. If you're a fan of either franchises (or even better, both), it's well worth watching.

Kung Fu Panda (2008,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda
This is probably Dreamwork's best effort since Shrek which isn't really saying much as the only good CGI film they've produced since Shrek was Over the Hedge. Still, it's not bad at all. Although I wasn't impressed with the casting of Jack Black, he is suprisingly good in his role. Infact, in many ways he makes the film.
The film itself is not hilarious but it's mildly funny. It's plot is also paper-thin, but it pans out as a perfect homage to the kung fu genre; many films of which also contain paper-thin plots.
The music is brilliant and the animation is lovely and the action scenes are actually pretty cool. It's a good effort and probably the 2nd best animated so far this year after Wall-E.

Heavy Metal (1981,  R)
Heavy Metal
This is a film realisation of the stereotype of adolescence, well, male adolescence. And if you take it as such, it's really very enjoyable. Guns, gore, naked women with huge boobs and as the title suggest, heavy metal, it's all here.
The first segment is like a blue-print for The 5th Element and even Bladerunner to an extent. I'm almost certain they drew some inspiration from it. Other segments vary in quality. My favourite was the one featuring zombies on a plane during World War II.
The wrap around is confusing and utterly cheesey, but in a film like this, you really can't complain.
The music is suprisingly good, the heavy metal music isn't really over-emphasised at all and the actual score is suprisingly majestic.
The animation is also (though dated), top notch.

This is really worth checking out, just for it's cult quality and it's obvious influence on the world of animation and sci-fi.

A really bizarre film. Incredibly Wes Anderson despite being animated. Full of odd jokes, some of which are hilarious. I loved it for a while then I began to get bored... as is the case with most Wes Anderson films that I've seen. There's a lot to like about them, but they never quite become the sum of their parts. It's still a very enjoyable film though, and worth watching if you're a fan of animation or the story or Wes Anderson. Bill Murray is in it. Bill Murray.

Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker
The best animated Batman anything I've seen so far. Much darker than the others (and I hear they had to heavily cut it to make it less dark). It also features a brilliant Joker (2nd best Joker I've seen after Heath Ledger's -for some reason Mark Hamill's take just seems more right here) and some nice animation on the Joker himself too.
Not bad, not bad at all. It starts to outstay it's welcome within the last 10 minutes or so however, but so has every other animated Batman movie I've seen.

The Secret of NIMH (1982,  G)
The Secret of NIMH
Takes about 45 minutes to get going, but once it does it's actually very enjoyable. Maybe it's just because ever since I saw The Plague Dogs, I have a soft-spot for animated tales of animals breaking out of animal testing labs, who knows.
It's not on par with the majority of Disney's canon, but it's a noble effort all the same.

Batman - Mask of the Phantasm (1993,  PG)
Batman - Mask of the Phantasm
One of the better animated Batman movies, but it suffers the same problems as the others too; a very strong start, but it runs out of steam about half way through. It's still a nice diversion though. Worth watching if you're a batfan anyway.
Whilst there's some CGI thrown in, it's not really movie quality animation. And the voice acting isn't up to par either (with the exception of Mark Hamill's Joker). Normally I wouldn't complain about this, but this is the only theatrically released animated Batman movie I know of.

La Plančte Sauvage (The Savage Planet) (The Fantastic Planet) (Planet of Incredible Creatures)
Pretty much everything you should want from good sci-fi is evident in this film but it's not fully realised and a little diluted over the running time. That said, it's still a very thought-provoking and mostly entertaining film if a little dry.

Time Masters (Les Maîtres du temps) (1982,  Unrated)
Time Masters (Les Maîtres du temps)
Rene Laloux's next film after The Fantastic Planet. It's not as deep or thought-provoking but it's a lot more enjoyable, partly due to much better animation (though I should point out, it is still very cheap and basic stuff).
It's still very good sci-fi and although it's much more suited to children than The Fantastic Planet, again, I'd say it's a film made with adults in mind more than children.
A big plot point at the end leaves a few boarderline plot-holes and so the film almost felt like Rene just had a cool idea he wanted to cram in the film, but this might be because I've seen another film do a similar twist and that film did it better. Still, worth checking out if you're a fan of animation or science fiction.

Hadashi no Gen 2 (Barefoot Gen 2)
A vastly inferior and incredibly unnecessary sequel, but far from a bad film on it's own terms. It's watchable and has some lovely poignant little moments and characters, but a lot of it (mostly the group of pick pocket children) just seems a tad out of place.

Horton Hears a Who!
It's alright.
It's not particularly funny, but it has some moments and it's entertaining all the same. It feels like more of a kiddy movie than one aimed at kids and their parents too, but I suppose there's nothing wrong with that.
The film somewhat felt like it lacked the scope necessary for a film of that type, given that it was essentially just about an elephant walking a few miles with a flower.
Also, this is the worst example of celebrity voices for celeb voices sake I can recall seeing in quite some time. Jim Carrey does his best, but his voice is not suited to an elephant. Steve Carell is suprisingly good just as he was in Over the Hedge. Seth Rogen is quite good although I'm sure a voice actor could have done it better. All the other celeb voices are just annoying. There's nothing wrong with using voice actors instead of big names. If you have to use celebrities, cast them better. Remember Robin Williams in Aladdin, Eddie Murphy in Shrek and Tom Hanks in Toy Story? We want that kind of casting.

Anyway, it's overall not a bad film at all, but better suited to the young kids.

Coraline (2009,  PG)
Coraline
A bit like a relationship with a plastic-surgery-ed bimbo in that it's nice to look at, but completely lacks in substance and is immitating something it's not.
Coraline is absolutely gorgeous. One of the nicest looking films and certainly the best example of stop-start animation I've ever seen. However, everything else is to me, just a mixture in terms of quality. Some bits are incredible, some bits are straight-up bad and there are bits ranging through all the spectrums inbetween.
The cat character is fantastic, the mice-circus scene is amazing (though FAR too brief), certain characters and the animation are amazing and so forth. On the other hand, other characters feel very dull, the film is far too long for its own good and lacks the scope and scale it needed to really satisfy me with its ending.
Certain bits also weren't explained whatsoever or were left far too vague. I was able to piece most of this together (such as the button moving over the moon representing how much time Coraline had left to complete a 'game'), however, it wasn't actually mentioned once and I think most children (the film's target audience) will be left bewildered by a lot of it.
Basically, about 50% of the film is amazing and about 50% is mediocre -in every way: concepts, characters, scenes, etc. The only thing that's consistently wonderful is the animation. If you like Henry Selick's other work then you'll probably love this; however, if like me, you only love The Nightmare Before Christmas and don't think much of his other efforts, then you'll most likely feel like I did with this one.

Ultimate Avengers: The Movie (2006,  PG-13)
Ultimate Avengers: The Movie
Good fun and very interesting to watch purely to get an idea of how the upcoming live action The Avengers is going to pan out. However, the majority of the film just sets up the Avengers as a team and so very little of it is devoted to their plot against these alien bad guys. And on top of that, everything is fixed with a little fight a bit later on.
So yeah, very watchable, but don't expect more than straight-to-video quality.
