Because, frankly, Entertainment Weekly's list of the top 20 (at http://snurl.com/pscub) is garbage, here are my favorite horror films since 1989, in no particular order.

Ringu ( Ring) (1998,  Unrated)
Ringu ( Ring)
Possibly the most purely frightening film I've ever seen. An excellent use of silence to generate fear.

Sometimes, when I'm laying awake in a strange bed, I dare not turn over for fear of meeting Sadako's face.

Audition (Ôdishon) (1999,  R)
Audition (Ôdishon)
Easily the most disturbing film I have EVER seen. And it starts so innocently & sweetly - like "Sleepless in Seatle" or something. Or like a guy's sex comedy. And then all just goes so horribly, horribly wrong. And yet, as grotesque and torturous and sadistic as it becomes in the 3rd act, it's still a movie about real human beings who are just emotionally broken by the world and unable to move past it to be redeemed by love. It's exquisite.... if you can take it.
3
Scream (1996,  R)
4
Hostel (2006,  R)
5
28 Days Later (2003,  R)
28 Days Later
One of the scariest movies I've seen in years. And Naomie Harris is BAD ASS!! Clearly a landmark among horror films - here is the moment where movie zombies all around the world figured out how to RUN. Also one of the better applications of digital cameras for a feature film that doesn't feel intentionally amateurish. Boyle & Garland just rock.

Session 9 (2001,  R)
7
The Blair Witch Project (1999,  R)
8
The Descent (2006,  R)
The Descent
I LOVE this film! Hot chicks vs. mole men - what's there not to like? I may have to marry Natalie Mendoza. One of the few monster movies I've seen in years that's legitimately scary.

30 Days of Night (2007,  R)
30 Days of Night
I was really caught off guard by what an intense and harrowing experience this movie is. I feel like its the first time I've seen a real HORROR film from a domestic studio in a long while. And I also really appreciate that they present vampires not as these romantic, besotted lovers with a fatal flaw, but what they're really supposed to be: monsters. Grotesque, inhuman monsters. I wish they gave Melissa George & Mark Boone Junior more to do in this film, and I REALLY wish there was more of Ben Foster. The only reason why I'd give it less stars is because I'm not sure I'd put myself through that again. :-) But a great job. Good and scary.

Candyman (1992,  R)
11
Lord of Illusions (1995,  R)
12
Silent Hill (2006,  R)
Silent Hill
Much richer and scarier than I expected. And shockingly bloody at times. On top of that, a really original story about multiple layers of existence. Highly recommended for horror & spiritualist fans. But I must admit, I am shocked that a studio was willing to pony up $50 million to make this movie. I guess that speaks to the presumed power of the video game audience.
13
Dawn of the Dead (2004,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
I had low expectations going into this film, and they were vastly exceeded within the first five minutes. Of course, this remake wouldn't even be possible without "28 Days Later", but, given that, it consistently goes where angels fear to tread. When you see a pregnant woman among the survivors, you instantly know nothing good can come of this. I think my buddy decided he didn't want to be around me during the zombie holocaust, because anybody who even looked a little twitchy, I was screaming for their heads in the theater. I learned from Naomi Harris well - no chances!
14
The Host (Gwoemul) (2007,  R)
15
High Tension (Switchblade Romance) (2004,  R)
16
The Strangers (2008,  R)
The Strangers
Finally, a horror movie that's actually pretty f'n scary. Sadly, there isn't much else to it. Which is really unfortunate, because the filmmaker introduce a ton of things that could add more meat to this film, but they don't use any of them. I don't get it. But it did get my heart racing, which is more than most original American horror films these days. The handheld camera REALLY got on my nerves, though.

Pet Sematary (1989,  R)

Nightbreed (1990,  R)
19
Dark Water (2002,  PG-13)

In the Mouth of Madness (1995,  R)
