El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
This movie is imaginative, powerful, and has a story that's so perfectly told, it's almost scary. Easily the best movie of 2006.
2
Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
Pumped me up 10 times more than "300" did. Flies you back in time and drops you off hard into the heart of the Mayan Empire. The movie focuses on one man and his desire to save his family. Extremely exciting and very, very well made.
3
United 93 (2006,  R)
United 93
Very powerful. Probably the most profound display of bravery in any movie I've seen.
4
Nacho Libre (2006,  PG)
Nacho Libre
Hilarious. He sounds more Mexican than me, and I'm Mexican
5
The Last Kiss (2006,  R)
The Last Kiss
As painful as this movie is to watch for anybody who's been in a serious relationship, the fact is that it REALLY delivers all of the confusion, emotions, and situations concerning the complexity of love almost perfectly. There are a couple of sideplots that I could have done without, but holy cow is this a well made film.

Why not? I'll up this movie to 4.5 stars. After watching it again, I realized how much this movie works on so many levels. All of the performances are excellent, the dialogue is smart, and the events and emotions are so authentic. Hey, "Say Anything" and "Garden State" fans...look over here, this one's good too!

Little Miss Sunshine (2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
Wow, I can't believe I only gave this movie like three stars the first time I saw it. I had to watch it again for my class, and this time, I just absolutely loved it. Not only is it hilarious at the right times, but there's so much heart behind this story. It really has a great message of what a "good family" really is; that a good family isn't one with few flaws, but one that can pull together despite having so many. And the heart of this movie is really Abigail Breslin. Every time things go into the crapper for one of her family members, she is always there, in her own little way, to bring everyone back together again. These scenes are also some of the most touching as well. Top it all off with great and quirky performances all-around, and the result is a real treat. Great stuff.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006,  R)
Letters from Iwo Jima
Wonderful, and I saw George Lucas in the theater where I saw it
8
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
Great performances and some raw and gritty dialogue fuel the compelling story. I was taken aback, however, when I saw the original version, "Infernal Affairs". Scorcese's version didn't really improve upon anything, but made an English language carbon-copy of an already good film. Unoriginal, but still definitely worth watching.

Thank You For Smoking (2006,  R)
Thank You For Smoking
This is actually a pretty hilarious movie. I loved Aaron Eckhart's performance; I think it should be classified as one of the best comedic performances of the new millenium. The film is smart, satirical, quick, and deliciously politically incorrect. It doesn't really take a particular stance on the tobacco industry; it kind of just makes fun of every viewpoint involved...in a really smart and funny way. The movie also has a lot to say about America in general.

"You know that guy who can get any girl that he wants? Well I'm him...on crack!"--Nick Taylor (Aaron Eckhart)

lol.

Children of Men
Good movie. Best camera-work i've seen in a while.
