Bully (2001, R)
It is so dark and troubling. This film is worth a viewing by every parent of teenage children. It is not an easy movie to stomach as it is filled with heavy handed youth doom, addled by drugs and alcohol and sex. This gem is based on the novel by Jim Schutze "Bully: A True Story of High School Revenge. |

Monster (2003, R)
I did not see Charlize Theron, instead I saw Aileen Wuornos. I was disturbed and yet completely riveted with this movie. Aileen is a serial killer, a ruined soul and yet you would end up feeling sympathetic. It's depressing engaging, engrossing, and realistic. After that, I needed a silly comedy to lighten up. |

Amazing Grace (2007, PG)
What an amazing historical piece! My regret was not being able to watch this earlier. This film is about the fight of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery in the early 18th Century. Ioan Gruffudd as Wilberforce is believable, complimented by an amazing casts like Albert Finney. The beautiful song Amazing Grace has long been one of my favorite songs, hearing and singing it in church during my younger years. |

Changeling (2008, R)
Clint Eastwood behind the camera? Do not miss it. Jolie gives a convincing portrayal of a mother who returns home from work to find that her son Walter is missing. She calls the police and, after enduring a grueling 24 hours, they search for her son. But the boy they return 5 mths later to her is not her son. A gem of a period piece not to be missed. |

The Killing Fields (1984, R)
Dr. Haing S Ngor dominates this movie. Apparently he had never acted before. It tells the true story of Dith Pran, played by Cambodian survivor Haing S. Ngor, and his journey to escape the Khmer Rouge death camps which is an awful moment in human history. A movie that it is not easy to watch. Brutal and honest , the scene at the French embassy was the hardest to bear. My only gripe was that during certain scenes, the translation was poor some subtitles would have been much appreciated |

Hotel Rwanda (2005, PG-13)
Such a powerful historical drama. A true account of a hotel manager, Paul Rusesabagina who gave sanctuary and saved the lives of 1,200 people in the hotel he is working despite the danger to himself and his family. |

Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003, R)
Brutal and violent gang life in Rio De Janeiro. Crime and drugs are a norm with young kids toting guns in this notorious slum. Easily one of the best, fiercest foreign films I have seen. Gangster films always seem to make for good dramas. My only problem was I happen to purchase this DVD in Germany, there were only 2 subtitles and 1 dubbing available, German and Portugese. I wish I had paid more attention during my German class! |

Defiance (2009, R)
A true and inspirational story during the nightmarish Holocaust. Expect no less from director Edward Zwick who directed The last Samurai,Blood Diamond and Legends of the Fall. The story tells the survival of the three Bielski brothers during the Nazis occupation. It tells the story of the Fighting Jews. Daniel Craig held his own here. Although at times he has a tendency to lapse into his British accent. Liev Schreiber is always excellent. A film thats engaging from beginning till the end. Indeed it is one of the better movies of 2008. |

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987, R)
It is always a pleasure watching this film again. I truly enjoy Robin Williams's full-frontal comic intelligence. He is indeed a gifted chameleon, he could impesonate almost any character and makes viewers laughs. This one is a real treat after watching somber films about Vietnam, such as Platoon and Hamburger Hill. It is an uplifting film. It is loosely based on the true story of Adrian Cronauer, an air force radio DJ who was transferred to Vietnam. |

Friday Night Lights (2004, PG-13)
Based on a true story. Every one of the actors here is a gem in this movie. I got so caught up with the characters. The games scenes are also one of the best parts. It is sometimes difficult to watch the bone-crushing battles on the football field, Peter Berg captured every essence of the players very well. The personal pain, the joy and the pressure to succeed where football is everything in a little town called Odessa in Texas. The obsessive desire to win at almost any cost. |

Into the Wild (2007, R)
Part of me loved the film, the other part of me is wary of it. The scenery from the Alaskan wilderness is breathtaking, the phenomenal acting from Hirsh, the direction from Sean Penn, its marvelous. At times,I envy the true freedom that Christopher McCandless experience in the course of his adventures. Now comes the wary part. Being a parent myself, I wouldnt want my kid to give up on his career, family, everyone who loves him, just about everything to go trekking into the wild. It is hard to see how his parents especially his mother suffers and endures the pain of not knowing where her son may be. Christopher strikes me as immature and selfish, a boy who made the wrong decision and when he realised that, it was too late. |

Antwone Fisher (2002, PG-13)
Curious about Denzel 's directing debut and he starred in it as well, I decided to watch this. It is from an adaption of the book Finding Fish, based on the remarkable true memoirs of Antwone Fisher. This is truly a heartfelt story, the story of obstacles overcome. with impressive acting from Derek Luke. It is extremely difficult to remain dry eyed for long. A movie that I will not forget easily and a salute is in order. |

Hamburger Hill (1987, R)

Nothing But the Truth (2008, R)
Kate B is a very good actress, so good that I admire and despise her character here. Watching her performance throughout the movie, at first I rooted for her, felt her pain, admired her integrity but later despised her for putting innocent lives in danger in order to protect her source and stand by her integrity. Jeopardising her marriage and her relationship with her young son. The plot loosely incorporates the real-life drama of former CIA agent Valerie Plame and New York Times writer Judith Miller (who served 85 days in jail on the same charges). A brilliantly provocative film I must say. |

Battle in Seattle (2008, R)
Absolutely riveting from start till end! Did not expect such good and memorable work from Stuart Townsend debut. It is interesting that he mixed actual footage supplied by Seattle television stations during the 1999 five days long riots with his direction, There s an impressive cast of talented actors here, including Martin Henderson, Michelle Rodriguez, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Carpenter, Andre Benjamin, Ray Liotta, Connie Nielsen, Channing Tatum and Townsend's partner, Charlize Theron. This film creates awareness for one who s not familiar with the cause of the protestors during the WTO s convention. An interesting line from the movie: Mayor Tobin requests that protesters be tough on the issues but gentle on his town. Proof that anything sounds possible as long as politicians can find a clever way to say it. |

The Newton Boys (1998, PG-13)
A true story of the Newton brothers, who are regarded as the most successful bank robbers in the history of the United States. Takes place sometime the early roaring 1920s.The film smells distinctly of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Oh well, women, girls are going to love this. All 4 Texan Newton brothers were played by bright eyes wonders McConaughey ,Hawke,D'Onofrio and Ulrich and they are pleasing to the eyes. Might cringed at some of the most stupefying antics of the bankrobbing scenes. Overall an average but not a great movie. |
