Unexpectedly Good Action Flicks
I'm not much of an action fan - but these films made me reconsider that stance.

Batman Begins (2005, PG-13)
This would have five stars if they had reigned in the action sequences. (A little too destructive - good thing Bruce Wayne is a millionaire, the city's going to need his money to rebuild everything he destroyed! - and a little too long.) I really enjoyed the film, particularly the excellent acting. I've been told I would think it was even better if I had seen how bad the first three Batman movies are... |

Casino Royale (2006, PG-13)
The action sequence that opens this movie is truly spectacular. Too bad I'm not more of an action fan! I wanted a bit more dialogue at the beginning of the movie to make me invested in why the action was happening. I shouldn't have to wait half an hour to get context! But much of the dialogue, when it did happen, was clever, and all of the acting was quite good. I was surprised that I wasn't more on-edge throughout; I think I never really became attached to the characters. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the fun! |

Serenity (2005, PG-13)
Definitely kept me engaged throughout (sometimes to the point of stress - I'm not good with suspense), but towards the end I was just tired of the violence and wanted the conclusion to come. I think I would have enjoyed it more had the movie trended more towards sci-fi and away from action. Still, beautifully constructed world and fun, snappy dialogue. |
