Although this is one of those stories everyone has already read, watched and heard a handfull of times, it doesn't matter.
The reason this movie is good isn't the story, which is really just a justification for the happenings in it, but the sheer amount of good performance and good dialogue. Say what you want, this movie doesn't skips a beat.
Some people argue that it is the same movie as "Bedazzled", only not funny, these people should be reminded that movies aren't all funny ones, and that contracts with the devil are a plot as old as time. Different movies, different approach. This one is good as it is, and it's a drama.
And hats off to Sir Hopkin's monologue at the end of the movie.
Although it is not a bad story (I would gladly read the book), there is some serious bad movie making going on here.
There are plot holes the size of volcanoes, a narrator voice that just shows up in the middle of the movie, a lot of unnecessary filling scenes, dummy acting and (the worse) it is not one bit scary.
Don't tell me it's an old movie, there are good, scary, old horror movies.
This one is just bad.

Well, I liked it. It's well acted, well directed... Even if it's not an action/hororr/survival movie as people expected. It's a good movie. Just don't ask me what it's about...
I don't know why I took so long to watch this movie. Just mind blowing amazing.
It's one of those stories you had to make either on film or as comics. No other media would give you the right pacing or wrap your mind around it so well. Great story, great acting and amazing directing.
Beautiful movie, amazing art direction and great acting.
Of course, it is a very polemic view of an unloved historic character, but the script is good enough to make you care for her. And that's enough, really.
Watch it if you love period films. It's one of the best I've ever seen.
Do not believe what people say. This is an extremely good movie, although you need to make the effort of letting it tell its story, instead of rushing into conclusions. Good acting, good productions, good direction and a story that is highly improved by the way it is told. Definitely worth watching.
This is an awfully bad movie. And I enjoy japanese culture, action/gore movies and bad movies, so I do know what I'm talking about. It is so bad it isn't even funny. Badly acted, terrible choreography (the girl that said this movie's got good swordfighting has surely never seen a good swordfighting movie), a incredibly vanilla story where characters act like videogame sprites... It's really hard to choose the worse aspect.
A lot of people loved this movie and I will never see why, unless they're fans of the manga, of course. So, if you're a fan, than be it. Be a happy fan. I'm not, and I prefer my swordfighting movies to be more like Lady Snowblood.
Very good movie, but not excellent. Props to the writer for making it pratically speechless for the first half of the movie, but still over-hyped.
I mean, it's well made and the characters are good, but the story is almost inexistent. And heavily derivative.
That said, it's entertaining and well made, thus 4 stars. But don't try to explain to me how this is such a break-through movie, since silent movies were the very first ones to exist and Charlie Chaplin's acting keeps being better than a little animated anthropomorphic robot.
A truly five star movie. The animation is beyond fantastic, you can't even believe it's actually stop-motion. It's got charismatic characters, amazing visuals, and a great creepy-fun story. Recommend to anyone. Really.
