Some young punks step out of line and it's up to Chuck to take out the trash. Bronson plays Paul Kersey very well, portraying a liberal turned executioner to maximum effect. He pulls off the nervousness Kersey feels when he takes on the task of vigilante and his eventual feeling that it's his responsibility to rid the world of criminals. In the novel he apparantly goes completely insane to the point where he is killing people he believes might be criminals, and there are hints of that in Bronson's characterization. Excellent film that started a very entertaining series. |

Death Note (Desu nôto) (TV SHOW) (, Unrated)
Fun film about a different type of vigilante. I would have prefered to see the corruption of a certain character played out more, rather than just happening almost immediately (SPOILER: He attempted to kill the non-criminal "L" as soon as he found out he was hunting him END SPOILER) and I like the cliffhanger that leaves the audience anxious for the sequel. |

Death Wish 3 (1985, R)
This is the one where Paul Kersey turns into Maguyver. Really entertaining with a great psychotic villain. Also love the scene where the DA gets a cab out to where she believes Kersey possibly lives, sees him walking on the street and asks him out on a date... after he is released from jail. Well, she is the first person to ever look at Bronson and her immediate reaction is that he's "gentle". Awesome movie that is constantly entertaining. |

Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1993, R)
A great ending to a great franchise. Two extremely likable villains, Tom O Shea and Freddy Flakes (I think that's his name, the dandruff guy). Even in his twilight years, you really shouldn't piss Bronson off. Plus a lot of laugh out loud moments and the best fat man through a plate glass window I've ever seen. Now I guess I need to see Death Sentence to round off the whole Death Wish experience (it was a sequel or something in book form). God, I wish they could make Death Wish VI: Kersey Goes Bananas. |

Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987, R)
While not as funny as the comedy Death Wish 3, this is one effin entertaining flick. I think I am officially a J. Lee Thompson fan, the man made some wonderfully violent eighties Bronson extravaganzas which are up there with my favourite action films. In this one it seems they are going back to basics at the beginning, someone close to Kersey is killed, but then Kersey becomes Yojimbo after being financed by a millionaire to help take out the trash. With the inventive kills, Kersey is almost becoming like a Jason or Freddy. |

Death Wish 2 (1982, R)
Bronson goes to LA to take care of some punks... and I don't mean babysit them! I mean kill them (in case you were wondering). Pretty good vigilante film, I like the angle that Kersey is hiding that he's a vigilante from his fiance. Not yet as cheesy as it becomes, the only part that screams cheese is when the punks (including Lawrence Fishburne III) hang out in the park doing a homo-erotic dance routine before buying guns in another part of the city entirely. I can totally see why Bronson feels the need to rid the world of them after watching them dance. Goodbye. |

The Punisher (1989, R)
Back when anyone who had 5 bucks to spare could buy the rights to a Marvel character, came this exploitation classic. Everyone I know or have ever met hates this film, like it's somehow supposed to be more than what it is, but if it is taken for what it is, it's pretty cool. Lots of guns and action and Lungren plays a pretty decent Frank Castle. Plotwise, I don't remember any of it, but I do remember having a very good time. |

Death Sentence (2007, R)
Though it has a couple death defying leaps in logic I'm very happy to see a straight up vigilante film again. In it's favour, it's vicious and has a decent central character, but unfortunately it does go a little hollywood when it comes to the offing of the punks. There are a lot more shootouts than executions. But still, gotta love the message that you don't ever mess with a man's family. Though domesticated Bacon seems to unrealistically and easily win one on one combats with street thugs, it's interesting to see the lengths a modern man is pushed to to protect and avenge his family. And I'm sure it's better than the terrible looking "The Brave One". (and if it isn't I'll just come back and delete that sentence. Nyah nyah) |

War (Rogue Assassin) (2007, R)
There is a very good movie hidden underneath all the bad editing and storytelling style. Still, what could've been a fantastic film turning out to be barely mediocre is truly disappointing. The missed opportunities in the drama and action department are staggering. This could've been a great film in the style of SPL, with great dramatic scenes interspersed with mindblowing action setpieces, but by the director constantly trying to make everything look exciting, he hurts the film worse than anything else could have. Still, the twist at the end is very good, good enough to make me watch it again with that in mind, but I'd need to go back to Catholic school for many more years before I could forgive this film all it's sins. |

The Punisher (2004, R)
Could've been great, should've been great, but wasn't. Focusing on Castle's backstory too much is the film's first mistake. It seems like it takes forever for the film to actually get started. Then when it does, it putters along, adding characters from Garth Ennis' classic take on the character and ruining them. The last ten minutes of this movie is what it should've been like from the half hour point, Frank Castle as a ruthless killing machine. However, the last ten minutes did get me excited about the sequel, now that Frank is Frank, but it is beginning to look like it is not to be. I respect Jane's decision not to make a bad script, but could it have really been worse than this one? |
