I watched Apocalypse Now quite a while ago but I refused to rate and review it until I had seen Redux as well. I finally got a copy so I can now review it. I think the best place to start would be right at the beginning of the film. The very first shot where it fades in and you see all these palm trees. Then you get the ominous sound of helicopter blades in slow motion. A helicopter flies by and then without warning the trees are blown up. I think my exact words were fucking hell. I think that shot sums up the whole film as one big shock and unexpected series of events that gradually just get more and more outrageous. It also sets up the theme of insanity very well as Martin Sheen awakes to realise that his dream of helicopter blades were only that of the ceiling fan. Extremely powerful opening to the film that is probably one of the best ever.

I have yet to find another film that can make me cry. This film does it every time even if i watch it back to back. Mel Gibson is excellent although parts of his accent is laughable. But none the less he is amazing. This film makes me proud to be Scottish. Every Scot should see this film and those who aren't should as well. The passion is this film is unbearable at times. FREEDOM!!!

Such an amazing film about an amazing man. I think this story would have been a real challenge for Steven Spielberg because of how important this man is to a lot of people. He really had to do him justice. And he did. A wonderful portrayale of a man that just wanted to help people. Probably the best true story ever. They either tend to be good or rubbish but this one exceeded good it is excellent. It's a must see film, no question. I doesn't matter what kind of films you like, you'd find it hard not to enjoy this even though it lasts such a long time it just grips you.

Excellent war film. The opening scenes are excellent and I read that most of the film is pretty historically accurate which usually helps make it more enjoyable. Right from the beginning you really feel for the guys that are there. It shows you them being shot by their sergents if the try to run away which i read did actually happens. The whole film really shows you the horror of war, although in this particular one, something good does actually come from it. Jude Law gives a brilliant performance as does Rachel Weisz. Together they make a great pair and the chemistry is pretty intense. The plot is excellent and although it focuses on only a few main characters you do get a feel for the war going on around them. Before i finish I have to mention the boy that plays Sacha. I had no idea he was in it, it was just funny to see the boy from My Family (a British sitcom) in a film like this. He did a brilliant job though. A great entertaining film.

Excellent war film. The opening sequence is probably in the top 10 of best ever. It really is a stunning piece and is great to watch on it's own as well. The plot is excellent and really exciting and entertaining. Not completely cold, it shows a lot of hope as well. Tom Hanks gives a stunning performance and one to be proud of. Matt Damon is excellent. Little disappointed that Vin Diesel died quite early on but I guess it had to happen to someone. Jeremy Davies did a brilliant job and really impressed me. A must see war film for everyone even if you're not into war films.

Powerful and chilling. I think the best thing about this film would have to be the collection of utterly brilliant performances. Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Meryl Streep give such touching and disturbing in some cases, performances. My favorite out of the film would have to be Christopher Walken. I feel he doesn't get enough credit for his work and this film shows exactly what he is capable. I also loved Meryl Streep's performance. I read that she improvised a lot of her lines as well which is pretty impressive. She is a brilliant actress and this really is one of her best films. It was also John Cazale's last film and a fine tribute to a fine actor. Robert DeNiro's performance glues the whole film together and it wouldn't be the same without him. I read that the brilliant acting in the film and the realistic feel of the whole thing was because a lot of it was real. Such as when Savage is yelling, "Michael, Michael" as he is stuck in the river is actually Savage yelling at the director Michael Cimino because of his fear of rats which were infesting the river area. He was yelling for the director to pull him out of the water because of the rats. A lot of credit for this brilliant film has to go to Michael Cimino because he worked extremely hard on this film and it certainly paid off. A must see movie.

I know it sounds stupid but it's my favorite Christmas movie. I have to watch this every Christmas. Although this year it was on Christmas Eve. One of the best war films ever made although I do enjoying picking fun at some of the stupid things in it. Like how come all the British guys get shot in the head but Steve gets a slap on the wrist and sent back to the camp. A little unfair if you ask me. Even with it's flaws, it's hard not to love. It's a classic movie that everyone must see.

I'm in the process of reading the book and i'm loving it as much as I loved the film. Christian Bale really was a talented actor at such a young age. We don't get to see Ben Stiller much but he is really funny in the parts that we do. John Malkovich has never been a favorite actor of mine. To be honest at times i've actually hated him but in this film I thought he was great. I do hope, which I think it will, that the book is as great as this.

I think this is probably the first war film i've seen that depicted things from the other side. And it's about time too, there are not enough of them about. Many German soldiers didn't know what was going on and didn't understand their government. This film was nominated for six Oscars but didn't win any of them which shouldn't have been the case. They should have won one at least. The cinematography in this film is amazing. The acting is of a very high standard which is also award winning. I have not seen the uncut version which I understand is five hours long but I do intend on watching it one day, when I have the time. Wolfgang Peterson's direction of everything is just amazing considering everything on screen looks very hectic. Not really anything bad to pull this film up on apart of the scene shot above the U-Boat where the soldiers really do look as though someone is throwing a bucket of water at them. Small and insignificant but I couldn't help but laugh.

And Stanley Kubrick does it again. I have loved all of his films out of the ones i've seen and this one is no different. The whole idea of the thing is just pure genius. I don't think anyone could ever produce something like this and make it work so well. A lot of people say this is the best war film ever, i'm not quite sure I would say it was the best but it certainly comes close.

A whole lot better than I thought it would be. Joel Schumacher certainly redeamed himself with this one. The plot is very heart wrenching. Colin Farrell's character is extremely deep and he is fascinating to watch. To begin with he seems like just an arrogant guy but as the film goes on you really begin to like and respect him for help out the other, more disadvantaged members of the platoon. By the end when he drives off in the truck I was close to tears. The other characters are all brilliant to watch as well. The ending was fantastic and the whole film is one of the best anti-war films i've ever seen. I liked that the word Fuck as used 276 times throughout this film. I think this is an extremely under-rated film and the actors deserve more credit for it because throughout filming the had no luxuries including trailers, make-up artists, hairstylists and chairs. Couldn't have been easy. A must see anti-war film.

I think that it should be made clear that this is not a war film as such. Nothing like the others that are in circulation today. It's more about the soldiers which is suitable for todays society. The plot is solid and heartfelt. Jake Gyllenhaal pulls the films together nicely and plays his character brilliantly. It really achieves a lot in terms of the war that is going on at the moment and represents it well. Soldiers fighting for men the do not know and a cause they do not understand.

I read somewhere that this film was pretty good and Sean Penn's performance was excellent. Whoever wrote that was spot on. You should watch this film if only to see Sean Penn in action. He really is excellent. Michael J Fox is brilliant as well. The plot is really solid and gives you an idea of the different horrors that soldiers had to go through during the Vietnam war and all the others as well. Good character for John Leguizamo to play and not quite his usually type of character but he did a pretty good job. Brian De Palma is a brilliant director and he should be proud of this film.

Excellent performance from Tom Cruise. Important anti war film that more people need to see as it has a lot of great things to say as a protest against war. The performances are all good not just Tom Cruise but of course his character stands out most as he is the main character. Harrowing story that is a must see film.

I've waited a while to see this film and it finally made it's way onto my tv screen. I kept meaning to rent it but just never got round to it. A very good war film that didn't disappoint. Loads of people had told me to go and see it and their reviews were pretty much spot on. The acting was of a consistant high standard and the plot in general was good. I usually enjoy war films and this one wasn't much different. I liked the ending as well. You really feel for the guy when he realises what is going on but at the same time I felt that he was being a little stupid and I also couldn't understand he would want to build a bridge that would help the enemy anyway. That aspect of it didn't really make much sense to me but other than that I have no problems and also recommend that everyone see this brilliant film.

Really excellent film that has been overlooked just a bit too much. It had releases in 2006 and 2007 and I'm not exactly sure if it won any awards but it sure did deserve them. Christian Bale is terrific as he always is. He's made quite a few extremely good films these past few years and this one definatly falls into that category. The supporting cast was great as well. I think it was great to see Steve Zahn do something serious for a change. This proves he's capable of doing proper films and not just daft comedies. Jeremy Davies in war films always works out, he was brilliant and shouldn't be overlooked when handing out praise for this film. Definatly a film that should not be missed. There were loads of really excellent films released in 2007 and this one is just another to add to that ever growing list.
