Again, I did not see this movie in theaters, I was only 8 years old when it came out, I did purchase the 60th anniversary edition and watched both the dvds. Most WWII movies I have seen have protrayed the Nazi's as blood thirsty and inhuman and that they were but Steven Spielberg portrayed them as any other normal human being trying to win the war. But back to the movie, Tom Hanks did a good job acting as a captain who had issues just like any other soldier at that time. There was also good supporting roles by Tom Siezmore and Giovanni Ribisi. The D-Day battle was spectacular in the fact that it actually showed what it was like those few minutes before the landing. Most movies like that usually show the aftermath of the battle of D-Day and on. The part that felt were the best parts were when Hanks would have to think about the decisions that he had to make and what it had cost him. The reason I give such a good movie is that war takes all and sometimes the main heroes die which makes the story more heart wrenching and true.
Platoon is an aswome movie. Its probally my favorite movie right next to the godfather. Oliver Stone does a great job in directing this movie and the acting is great. Im not a big charlie sheen fan but in platoon he is good. I would recomend Platoon over and over again.
I was greatly impressed by this film. When you here of great war films, you usually hear of films based on WWII, like Saving Private Ryan or Patton. Most movies based on the Vietnam War don't show the true premise of why the war was going on. It just blabs on about how America shouldn't have been there. But this film truly showed what happened in the Vietnam War. It did focus on one character, yes, but he wasn't really important for the story. He was just there. The film not only showed the horrors of the Vietnam War, but of all wars. So go see this movie.
When black hawk down really happen they left out all of the details. Like how these men were pinned down and fighting for they're lives. The movie shows how that happen. Showing that they're motto is no man left behind, and in the movie they really showed that. In my movie ranking this would be 4 behind The Return of the King and before Gettysburg.
There has never been a tale told so well about something so hard to tell. The mass murdering of the Jews was never something to speak of nor something you want to watch. Although it must be told because after all, if we don't remember the mistakes of the past we are bound to repeat them. There is no way we could have watched Jews being murdered for three hours so the brilliant mind of director Steven Spielberg included the man Oscar Schindler into the mix. A German man who felt for the Jewish prisoners and gave them hop in a haven of a factory.
There' nothing to smile about here, Spielberg has included some dark comedy bits although they don't work nearly as well as his terrifying drama, realism and the outstanding performances from Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley that glow with excellence. This movie had to be made for histories sake. It's a good thing someone as talented as Spielberg handled it. It's a nearly flawless masterpiece. Besides it's disturbing and depressing theme the only complaint is it's amazingly slow pace and long running time. None the less, it is a timeless film that looks, breaths, and acts perfectly. If you are mature enough to handle the hot subject matter, do not pass up the chance to see a bit of history. The list is alive.
A film that could stand with Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven. Mel Gibson's first directoral debute, is amazing. The editing unnoticeable and the story is worthy of multiple oscars. This film is about, a man named,William Wallace, who only wants to live in peace. But when England invades his country of Scotland, he watches his country turn to turmoil and despair. The king of England, nicknamed "Long Shanks" is a rutheless man (only when it involes the business of Scotland) and treats Scotland with disgust.
Anyway, one day William gets secretly married to a woman. Why the secret you may ask? Well William had been to a wedding and saw the English soldiers rape the wife, on her wedding day. The day after William got married, his wife was killed by a soldier. That's when William snaps and decides to rebel against England. This movie is a four star masterpiece.
Is it possible for a movie to ever stand the test of time? Certainly the special affects, graphics, and to a lesser extent the acting will look different from modern film. Yet can a movie be more than the sum of those features? After all, is not Homer's The Odyssey still read after thousands of years, despite it being "dated"?
Surely, it is hard to compare film to literature. Yet if it is ever possible for a film to be timeless, Star Wars and the trilogy it launched is it. This film not only represented, but represents to this day, the very best of what it means to be a sci-fi epic. Though revolutionary in the realm of special effects, groundbreaking in other areas and breathtakingly creative, it does not rely solely on its original themes or new quirks to achieve acclaim, as many "good" sci-fi films do. This film, combines the best of science fiction with a story and a spirit that has meaning-- an underdog struggle, a coming of age tale, a morality play, behind an incredibly rich backdrop and a timeless cast of characters that fits it perfectly. At the heart of it all is a celebration of faith in a world of science, of heroism and spontaneity that touched and should continue to touch first time viewers.
Watching this film again after many years, I cannot help but compare it to the stale and formulaic films that have dominated the box office in recent years. In a world crammed with media, much of the spontaneity that once used to characterize American life seems to have quietly disappeared. Let's keep Luke, Han, Leia, Ben, Yoda, and the other unique characters that struggled against 'the dark side' alive for future generations.
Perfect adaptation of the graphic novel. This movie makes you feel for the characters and never lets up with intensity. The visuals are stunning and a great fairy tale. It's what the movie Troy should have been. Also well choreographed, no confusion about what is going on the battle scenes.
And to everyone complaining about it being biased against Persians or completely unrealistic. IT IS FICTION. It's based on a graphic novel, and like any other story told from one point of view it is glorified and biased. And that's what makes it great. If a Greek 200 years ago were to tell a story about the legend of the mighty Spartans, it would probably be something like this. This is a great storytelling movie. Oh wait, that's what movies are, stories.
Yep, I consider this one one of the best movies on the face of the earth. Top 5 in my book. It has the best romance ever, real and powerful, no "Titanic Fast-Love" here. And the last scene is probably the best movie scene ever, from the moment Hawkeye shoots the english officer in the head to the second when Magua falls dead. It just rules! A lot! And the music is great, the visuals, direction, everything top notch.
P.S: If you don't like this movie your soul is seriously ill. Seek help.
Not so. If you are a Fox viewer, you'd think all Muslims are terrorists. If you are a Bin Laden lover, you'd think all infidels deserve death... well this movie puts back into perspective some of the stories Historians write about the Crusades, the goodness and nobility of leaders of the past. The chivalry and honor shown by the leaders, and how a small group always manages to cause trouble.
Being a history Buff, I thought (rightly so) it made both sides very human. There are bad people on both camps as there are good people the same. One camp is not necessarily better than the other. Ridley gives some historical perspective of this facet of history that is rarely depicted.
Ther's a bit for everyone (except the Fox viewer and the Bin laden lover).
Even if as some would contend, the history presented therin is flawed, what I got out of it, is that this is how I'd like to have it been, these people shown on both sides have the character I'd like my kids to grow up as.
I fear however, in the end, the movie will make no one happy and fade into obscurity,me I will go watch it again.
Hands down no other German language film even comes close to this film in its story quality, attention to realism, excellent acting, and superb direction.
This was the first film distributed in the West to really approach the realism of war that has now become the standard for all film makers. Nowhere to be found, except for perhaps in the wet behind the ears of the young Lt. Werner (played to great effect by Herbert Gronemeyer), is the gung-ho almost gleeful approach to war that characterized American movies on the subject until Saving Private Ryan hit theaters.
This movie is not frequently viewed in the context of black humor, but many of the movies are classic sardonicism because of the stress that a wartime submarine patrol would place upon the men. If you watch carefully (and it helps to watch the original German language version, even if you have to watch it with subtitles, as much of the humor is lost in the English dubbed version) you will notice frequent jokes about food, sex, Nazism, the character flaws of the various crewmembers (Lt. Werner\'s claustrophobia, the anal-retentiveness of the First Officer, etc). Much of it, like many jokes in German is based on plays on words, so some familiarity with German is helpful, or one might be left wondering what the characters are laughing at in several scenes.
The strange character of Johann, the ship's machinist's mate, is certainly one of the most enigmatic of the entire crew. No one on the boat is quite sure what to make of this man, whose behavior and appearance, particularly the scene where he appears abruptly on the conning tower, lend an almost vampiric character (ala Nosferatu) to him.
All in all, this movie would be perfect except that the depth charge scenes (the ones from outside the sub) are the same ones, used over and over again, but this does not direct much from what is otherwise one of the best movies I have ever seen. Period.
American movie go-ers have been pacified by years of thoughtless, plotless, meaningless horror films that did not require any serious thought from the viewer and finally from France comes a horror movie with actual substance that does not fit the american mold. It's hard to even classify this movie as horror, psychological thriller is a better match but be prepared for explicit blood and gore. Do not switch off your brain when watching this movie, note every detail and enjoy the brilliantly clever ending and put it all together if you can ;-)
It is hard to have a story about the holocaust be "not interesting". With that said, here is the honest review...
The story follows a, you guessed it, counterfeiter that is highly successful at..well counterfeiting. This is great until World War II takes place and, he being Jewish puts him in the hands of a concentration camp. Without giving too many details the story follows his view of being forced into using his trade to defend the very thing that he should not defend (you'll understand more when you see it).
The movie is shot extremely well and is stressful to say the least. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that is looking for a thought provoking film that leaves you feeling happy to have a mortgage and your spouse slacking on his/her responsibility...the silly things we worry about. (you'll get that when you see the film).
Gory war movie, with good performances by Nick Cage and a memorable story about Native American Indians used as a secret weapon during the Second World War. Nick Cage should have died several times over but whatever the hero always survives. A lot of battle scenes done to death but only a minor point, interesting movie worth seeing.
