An unimaginative and boring movie. A couple of hot chicks but nothing good happens, even in the unrated edition. Bad, bad acting. Stay clear. There were already signs of a sequel. I sure hope they don't go through with it.
Leave it to Woody Allen to create an odd sort of movie that really goes nowhere but actually conveys a lot. What it conveys, though, is so ambiguous that you are unable to put it into words. Javier Bardem was arguably my favorite part of the movie, arguable because of Penelope Cruz. The rest of the cast wasn't far behind and make this movie a doubtful, funny and charming tale of ... of maybe sadness? Because Vicky ends up repeating Judy's mistake. That got me thinking about how it affected Doug (also, read Mark with Judy). As long as he didn't know about it, it couldn't hurt him. "Sometimes people deserve more than the truth" Or do they?
Spirited Away - 10/10; Words escape me. This is a stunning movie. The director has a fantastical vision and although I saw a dub, it was still great. The voice acting was superb, especially Chihiro's, so expressive. Usually when I see a movie, I won't actually see the concepts at work. I mean I'll have an idea of what the movie builds on but nothing solid. There were parts in this movie I clearly recognized as being showing friendship, strength, loyalty and yet, it doesn't seem dumbed down. Overall, I noticed how the spoilt child Chihiro changes into a responsible Sen. For too long I put off watching this movie because I wasn't sure if I'd like some girl lost in another world. Thankfully, I cast those doubts aside and treated myself to cinematic excellence.
Something was missing. I never really connected to the characters. Almost during the entire duration of the movie, I felt like it just went over my head but it turns out the movie was supposed to be a simple story, now that I'm reading about it.
Still a great movie with a story that has the warmth of a quilt on a snowy morning.
Batoru Rowaiaru - 8/10; So a lot of people and almost all the reviews I just read after watching the movie say it's a modern classic about the "folly of violence". Now I'm in doubt if I saw the same movie that they did. Okay, granted the concept that they built this movie on is great and some of the scenes are great, either for the ingenuity of the killing or stupidity of it. But what do I really think? I think (...and I'm gonna shout it out)
HOLY MOTHERFUCKING FUCK OF HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!! (multiple exclamations too) WTF.
That's my review. B-A-D acting of cosmic proportions. You haven't even heard corny if you haven't heard the dialogue in this movie. Cheesy. Words simply ain't enough. I think I missed almost half the movie because of the involuntary facepalms it induced, double facepalms at that. I saw it through two fingers with just one eye. You don't even have to be stoned to laugh at this blunder. Almost every other scene could be easily worked into a fail meme.
I'll admit though. After I started watching it, I couldn't bring myself to stop it. Like the characters in the movie, I was powerless to avoid the travesty that had befallen me. I was thrown on the island with them. There was no escape. I'm hyperventilating just writing this review.
I need to calm down.
You know what! Don't even listen to me just watch the damn movie and decide for yourself.
It's hard for me to define what Brazil is. It's a strange movie, imaginative (and fantastical if I dare say so), in it's approach in depicting totalitarianism and red tape as largely the consequence of impersonal, Goldberg's governmental machinery. How this machinery uses fear mongering, consumerism and an absurdly bureaucratic and overcomplicated framework to hide or suppress it's own shortcomings and mistakes and continue doing what it does best - prey on the people - is the central theme of the movie. It is very heavy on symbolism but that never pulls you down thanks to the opposing force of dark humor which is in ample and appropriate amount. Jonathan Pryce as the hero trying to save his damsel in distress (yeah, that too) from this machinery when he himself is a part of it, was simply superb. What sets this brilliant mess of a story in motion is a fly that meets it's doom at the hands of a bored worker drone of this machine. All in all, a great movie.
Oh and stay away from the "Love Conquers All" version. This movie is better taken with a hint of gloom.
Very nice and this being my first DC Animated movies, I think I enjoyed it enough to have a go at the other ones. I think Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is coming out soon. Some things do come to mind though. That little black girl who wanders into the middle of the fight was so... well, it's almost as if she was crying cliche. Oh and why do superheroes always have to jump into a fight at 60% strength? Back when I saw DBZ, I hated Goku for taking so fucking long to recover, while others take the beating, to a 100% before making his return, on more than one occasion. I see now that was the right way. I'm pretty sure if he had "come back" to fight Frieza at any less than 100%, the outcome would have been completely different. Also, the ending? How come as soon as he puts on his glasses, she's like, "Kent!" Ell-Ae-Emm-Eee. Bt I have to say, the first fight, with Doomsday was epic. It was nothing like I expected. It would've been so much better if my mom and my sister hadn't interrupted me. I guess they heard me shouting "Holy mother of fuck". So anyway, great movie.
omfg! That was so awesome. I haven't even been so scared watching strictly horror movies. It was also hilarious. Saim Raimi has done a tremendous job of integrating the humor and scares.
4/10; Falls just short of being an average movie. The producers thought they could carry it on just the cute furry factor. Even I thought so. How can you go wrong is what I said. Well, this is how you screw it up. Sam Rockwell did a good job on the voice acting and so did most others but Penelope Cruz was a disaster. Her accent was annoying. I've seen her live action movies and that has never bothered me but this was just uninspired. Even Zach Galifianakis looked bored. I have to say though, Steve Buscemi stole the show for me. His manic character was just great. There weren't many laughs but plenty of action. I thought the robot at the end reminded me of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen which was like a nightmare you sometimes have about a certain horrible event in your childhood. If you're going for a no brainer action movie, don't. It doesn't even fit there.
I hate movies like this. I hate love stories. I hate tragedies. I especially hate this movie even more because it's a great combination of the two. There's just so much tragedy and I hate it for that. When you see something like this, you realize why people call it heartbreaking. It's because it actually feels like your heart is being ripped apart in two. I almost went into Bradycardia. I stopped it a couple of times or muted the volume just to let it sink in (pun not intended). It has been a little over 15 minutes since this movie finished playing and I'm still taking deep breaths and just trying to divert my mind to something else. It plays on such an epic scale that I dread the prospect of seeing in a cinema hall... and they're converting it to 3D. I guess it will be re-released sometime. I think I will see it some day and maybe die watching it but I'll die a happy man. Anyway, story-wise there is nothing special, just a love story between two people from very different social classes, sort of like The Notebook but on a sinking ship. It's the grandeur of it all that sweeps you away. James Horner's score is decidedly weak (using the same basic melody again and again) but when the music turns up at strategic places in the movie, it's so powerful too. In the acting department, everybody brought their A game. Of course, the lovely Kate Winslet adds even more beauty to it and a little flash of her assets isn't unwelcome either lol. No that the movie doesn't have it's faults but I won't go into that now. This is one movie I secretly love but I'll never, ever, never admit it to anyone irl.
I actually enjoyed it. The serious tone of the music and the atmosphere is hilariously offset by funny incidents. Yes, it's more of a collection of disconcerted sketches but still good enough.
Good movie but like some people have already said, there wasn't enough drama... There wasn't enough intrigue. Johnny Depp looked good. This is after I saw his Pirates trilogy so, a marked improvement for me.
[SPOILER WARNING] People have called this movie Pulp Fiction on crack and rightly so. I don't remember why I got this but I'm glad I did. It's a hilarious collision of five stories. A hitman, who wants to know the purpose of things and people in life and his translator, going about their business. A suburban family of four in which the father is hypnotized into thinking that he's a bird and is trying to learn how to fly. A man who kills his wife and who fails to keep her dead over and over again. A hypnotist and a commercial executive. A trio of jobless guys wasting time burglarizing houses. [/SPOILERS]
Not once did I feel like it was dragging on because even the lull parts are used very effectively to build up anticipation. The colors are vivid and varies, just like the movie. The acting was superb. Some of the facial expressions were just priceless. It's a keeper and it definitely has the potential to be a cult classic.
It's not as bad as it has been rated. A good, fun ride for the family. Yes, it does recycle plenty of ideas and has nothing new to offer but sometimes you just want something tried and tested. Although I do think for a movie intended primarily for kids, it does have some serious violence. Just because it's perpetrated on and by aliens doesn't make it anything else.
Sunshine. When it first came out, I don't know why but I had it in my mind that the movie was just some sort of drama set in space. So I was never too excited to see it. But there came a time when there was nothing to download and nothing to see. That's when I remembered Sunshine. So I thought why not and boy was I surprised. Maybe this was one of the reasons why I loved it so much.
About the movie, it takes inspiration, as I read, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Apocalypse Now. I can clearly see Alien's influence, having seen it dozens of times. I'll admit I thought they were going to bring in a hostile alien when Icarus tells Mace that there is a fifth crew on board. But the other two movies are alien to me.
It's premise is scientifically inaccurate but then this is science fiction. They are allowed to take some liberties, right? Unless, of course, those liberties come at the cost of suspension of disbelief, which they did, for me... at times. The cause of the dying sun is never fully explained. Neither was the artificial gravity. On DVD commentary tracks, a Q-ball is accused as the culprit. But from what I've read, the sun is not dense enough to trap a Q-ball. Also, the bomb was not even close to being big enough to restart the sun. This is still better than the thermonuclear death of the sun, which they were most probably inclined to go with. Our sun is not supposed to die for another 5 billion years. Harvey's death also ruined some of my viewing please.
Still I give it a nine out of ten. Why? Because it works. The adventure, the horror, the race against time, the battle against surmounting odds, the struggle in the face of certain death, everything works well. So don't expect too much and get your popcorn for a Sunday afternoon watch. Decent is the keyword.
The movie portrays the psychological effect of extended space travel on humans quite effectively. It also works well to lay out the sheer enormity of a task such as this. The suspense was quite... Alien-esqe. But the conversion to slasher movie could have been made better. In the histrionics department, all the actors performed well. I was especially excited to see Cillian Murphy. He was great in Breakfast on Pluto. I didn't really know what to expect from Chris Evans. I had not seen any movie which required him to do any serious stuff. But he turned out alright. I didn't even recognize him at the beginning of the movie. Couldn't say anything about the rest of the cast but like I said, they did good. Danny Boyle knows what he is doing. He had plenty of practice with 28 Days Later and he used that experience very nicely here.
Also, I'm tired of seeing the movies where US saves the mankind. I know they make a lot of these, end of the world movies and they of course will glorify themselves as the most powerful, advanced nation but it was just nice to see someone who is not American head such a mission. The ensemble cast they chose also works in this direction and gave a certain international flavour to the movie.
So my question to you is, what was the favorite part of the movie for you? For me it was the influence of Alien. That brought up some great memories of seeing Alien for the first time.
Deadly hot chick in the lead? Great start but does it go anywhere from there? As it turns out, yes. There is some beautiful fight choreography in this movie. It seems a bit dragged on and the drama can get a little boring but the end is well worth the wait. Ukiha's final charge alone was enough. But then you get the awesome end of the ...queer guy. Oh and how can I forget monkey boy. That was hilarious, reminded me of Team Rocket from Pokemon. It was good enough to warrant a viewing of the sequel, Azumi 2: Love Or Death just to see some of those stunning sword fight sequences.
Great movie but I felt Wall.E was better. The death of Muntz actually caught me off guard. That was indeed surprising. The emotional scenes and the comedy was done pretty well but sometimes it felt stationary.
An understated comedy that doesn't demand too much of your mental faculties... and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Not in this case anyway; rather it works with more than enough charm to keep you in your seat.
I saw it a couple of years ago and it still holds out as one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'd say it's even more devastating the second time because you know how it ends. What an end it is indeed. It's an intense, intense movie. Some of the scenes actually make me physically sick. But the ass to ass scene was great Apparently that scene is based on something Aronofsky actually saw. Lucky him I guess.
Each of the characters has an addiction, which leads them into a downward spiral of destruction and despair, and as their dreams collide with the harsh reality, this movie ends up being a masterpiece of film making. I think this is one movie you should see when you think about trying drugs. It's not just about drugs too. What is a drug anyway? Is just the hard stuff like cocaine or heroine to be called a drug? Then what about the socially acceptable stuff like prescription pills? The music, yes how could I forget about the music. It's just one of the best movie scores I've heard. Mansell did a terrific job capturing the bleak piercing feel of the movie. I've used the words "best ever" liberally in this review but I feel that Requiem For A Dream commands it. I just wanted to see it once again so I could free up some space from my hard disk but now I don't have to heart to delete it. I loved it but I think you can hate this movie too. You just can't ignore it.
The fight scenes are good and really give you the excitement to keep watching. The dialog is awkward. Maybe that's how it was supposed to be but all in all it's an average flick.
One of the best openings in a romantic comedy I have ever seen. Not really a part of the story but I liked it.
A breath of fresh air? Something different? Offbeat? Overused though they fit. But like the movie, let's not put labels on it. It is what it is and what it is, is a charming little tale of love, heartbreak, acceptance and the rebound. It's a romantic comedy, about a boy and a girl who, don't fall in love with each other. It's funny and charming. Cute. Those are the words that best describe this movie. It is hard not to put labels on things. It is just human nature, an attempt to introduce some order. However, as our guy, Tom finds out the hard way, everything is just coincidence, a sequence of random incidents that shape our life the way it turns out.
Oh and Zooey Deschanel is gorgeous. I think she was the perfect choice. She's the only reason I got this movie but I'm glad I did.
On a personal note, the movie was sometimes a bit confusing for me due to it's non-linear narrative. But it has enough spunk to keep you entertained. What are movies for anyway?
It borrows a lot of things from the previous but I say it's an underrated sequel. Especially the small talk between the characters in the movie, that cracks me up.
