What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993, PG-13)
Why didn't Leonardo DiCaprio win an Academy Award for his portrayal? or at least receive a nomination? This movie shows what a wonderful actor he is. I don't believe any actor deserves to be paid the kind of money they dish out, especially to the top in the industry. That can't be helping the economy. However, he does deserve to be amongst the highest paid. If you need additional proof, look to The Basketball Diaries and This Boy's Life, as well as The Aviator and numerous others. I believe he outshined his castmates; however, eventhough Johnny Depp's character was low-key, he played it the way it should've been done. He is a naturally gifted actor that is versatile in the roles he can take, whether a blockbuster lead or as a character actor in an indie flick. Juliett Lewis is pretty much the same character in every role, only spouting a different name. Of course if a person is typecast, it won't take long before they are able to portray that personality flawlessly. I believe that in real life, she is the same person we see upon the screen, so it's quite easy for her to pull it off without questioning the sincerity. |
