Year by Year: 2007

P.T. Anderson jumps out of his comfort zone and crafts one of the most awesome, epic films I've seen this side of the 21st century. The best thing about P.T.A. is how he embraces his influences (Scorsese and Altman in the past, in this case: Kubrick, Malick, and Huston) and manages to inject his own style into his work - it's what at least I feel great filmmakers should do. Not much more can be said about Daniel Day-Lewis' performance; although I feel it doesn't match his performance in 'Gangs of New York,' it's still one of the most memorable things you're bound to see from '07, or the whole decade. Even more surprising though was the supporting cast - you know D-Day was going to carry the whole thing, but having strong support from Paul Dano and Dillon Freasier. The film evokes some great philosophical questions about the nature of love, greed, and faith, and how it all collides - friggin' love this movie. I could go on forever, but I'll end here.

A pretty funny and clever parody of those cookie-cutter music biopics. John C. Reilly's the man, and some of the gags (the Jews, his kids, cutting his brother in half, Bob Dylan) absolutely killed me, but naturally it was a mixed bag. But it was definitely worth seeing and yes, Jenna Fischer is hot.
