S) Scenes of a disturbing nature

These films are those which have the ability to make you uncomfortable. They are not disturbing films in a horror kind of way, but more often or not in a form of abuse, or horrific true stories.

THIS IS A NEW LIST AND OF COURSE WILL BE ADDED TO ONGOING.

4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days)
A controversial and interesting topic, which unfortunately is incredibly drawn out. It's very well acted and had the content been squeezed down every so slightly, this could have made a brilliant short film.

Rohtenburg (Grimm Love)
I have to say, I?ve watched many a Horror and Slasher type film, seen torturous plots and of course I?m a huge fan of Serial Killer films, but I think I finally found my boundary here, as it was a little too sick for my taste. Perhaps it?s the fact that it is based on a true story, that certainly added to the chill of the film, but there was also something very realistic about the last few scenes, that felt a little too voyeuristic.

Mysterious Skin (2005,  NC-17)
Mysterious Skin
I have complete mixed feelings about this film, the beginning made me feel pretty uncomfortable, which I?m sure was it?s aim and made the impact that was needed.

The rest of the film was fantastic and a well played lead role from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

A powerful film of child abuse, friendship and male prostitution, with some very strong images.

The Woodsman (2004,  R)
The Woodsman
Whilst taking on a theme that people usually unite together in hatred against, Kevin Bacon takes on the brave part in possibly his best performance of his career.

Not an easy subject to tackle, especially when we are seeing it from the flip side of the coin, yet the storyline is based on the power of suggestion as opposed to graphic content, yet still manages to create a psychological discomfort for the viewer.

Interesting Drama that will leave you questioning the moral dilemma throughout and the people?s views envolved.

Evilenko (2004,  Unrated)
Evilenko
A sinister and gruesome tale based on a true story, well played by Malcolm McDowell. The film starts off with some pretty realistic, uncomfortable viewing which actually brings the reality into this story. It does seem to go on a while and some of the acting (with the exception of McDowell) wasn?t all that good.

Certainly worth a watch if you find this genre interesting, however it was a little drawn out.

Elephant (2003,  R)
Elephant
Disturbingly realistic and a controversial topic to tackle. Certainly through the first half, it was very mundane and I found it difficult to keep watching, but of course in hindsight it?s certainly worth staying with to feel the impact of the finish.

Filmed in a sort of Documentary style, it?s certainly unique in it?s delivery, any other way would probably have disrespected many of the true events that have taken part in schools across America.

One of a kind.

Capturing the Friedmans (2003,  R)
Capturing the Friedmans
It?s dvd cover describes this documentary as ?thought provoking?. Even the most open minded of people are probably thinking ?why?? this seems like an open and shut case.

As the documentary unfolds, you realise just how complicated the case actually is, how the family appears to show biased support to the family members accused of these unthinkable crimes, how they filmed themselves continuously through years as a family ? (in fact supplying most of the footage on this documentary), how the evidence is challenged and what in fact is or isn't true in connection with the case.

Questions pop into mind throughout the documentary, many are answered within the film, others have been answered in the very lengthly special features and of course there may be questions that will never be answered.

Irreversible (2002,  Unrated)
Irreversible
Told in the tradition of that in "Memento" i.e the storyline is played backwards, the film opens with a very visually dark scene accompanied by a pretty bizarre sound (that's still running through my head!! ha ha), along with some very dizzy filming, the viewer isn't particularly aware of what is going on straight away, but within the first couple of scenes the storyline developes and of course you are intrigued to know, how it all began.

The married couple, Cassel and Bellucci are great together on screen in this unique, bizarre and very entertaining film. One scene in particular is very daring and controversial.

Another great performance from Cassel who seems to manage to express every emotion possible throughout the process of the film.

Bully
An extreme decision made by a group of teenagers for an extreme case of bullying. Based on a true story

Alive
This film was enough to put me off eating meat for a while! Worth a watch, but don't want to watch it again

The Accused (1988,  R)
The Accused
Jodie Foster plays an amazing role in this film. A powerfull film

The Entity (1982,  R)
The Entity
A much older film than I'd expected it to be and not scary like people had made it out to be, however the story through the eyes of the main character is a frustrating one trying to prove that the events are really happening and dealing with the situation at the same time. What's even more amazing is that this is apparently based on a true story. Worth the watch.

Salo (Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma) (1979,  NC-17)
Salo (Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma)
Without a doubt the most disturbing film I?ve ever attempted to watch. I tend to watch most films through, just to give it the benefit of the doubt, but had to switch this off, because of it?s uncomfortable imagery.

I knew this was a controversial film and of course that was one of my main reasons for watching it, I?m not one to shy away from controversial subjects, but this was a huge step too far for me. I don?t know how old the young Actor?s and Actresses were in this film, but they did look like children it still left me feeling very uncomfortable.

I thought the controversy surrounding this film was to do with the subject matter, but more disturbing was what the Actors/Actresses had to do in the film.

Curiosity does leave me wondering what happened next, but I just didn?t want to continue watching to find out, it felt all too voyeuristic to me.
