Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
An extremely worthy tale to tell of the true story of Harvey Milk, Gay and Human rights activist turned politician during the 70?s in San Fransisco.

Yet another great performance from Penn and very Gus Van Sant to bring a controversial story to light.

This is a great awareness story and a legacy that will live on. It also acts as a metaphor for any type of minority, whatever that minority might be.

Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
A film that leaves you full of emotions. Not the first film to bring about the subject of Homosexuality, yet the size of publicity this film gained, both positively and negatively has probably made it the most talked about Gay Interest film.

What makes this film quite unique for me is the lack of stereotyping in the casting and sitation of the storyline. The storyline builds from a slow moving start to a powerful and emotional tale.

Truly great performances by both Ledger and Gyllenhaal and is part of my favourite films list.

Breakfast on Pluto (2005,  R)
Breakfast on Pluto
An interesting role for Cillian Murphy and one he played well. A tale that seems over the top in parts and realistic in others. It?s not a hugely powerful storyline, yet it?s one that keeps yours attention throughout.
4
My Summer of Love (2004,  R)
My Summer of Love
Good performances all round, particularly from Natalie Press, about a relationship between two girls who share the summer together and the differences between them.

VERDICT: A really enjoyable film
5
Bad Education (La Mala educación) (2004,  NC-17)
Bad Education (La Mala educación)
A bizarre tale, which was a little confusing at times, but of course all makes sense eventually. It possibly requires more than one viewing though to really put the pieces of the puzzle together correctly.

Very typical in the sense of Almodovar though, to bring us an unusual topic, which many Directors wouldn't have delved into.
6
Before Night Falls (2000,  R)
Before Night Falls
Quite a difficult one to rate, as the acting was superb, whilst the film was long and drawn out. Great narration throughout by Javier Bardem, which worked well and he, as always was very impressive.

The story of Reinaldo Arenas? life is certainly an interesting one, but the film does take some perseverance.

A very small role here for Johnny Depp and an even smaller (almost unrecognisable) role for Sean Penn.

Head On (1999,  Unrated)
Head On
Straight from the off this film begins with a natural, well acted plot, with a good role played by Alex Dimitriades. The realisticness of the film, does make it feel a little slow moving, but remains an enjoyable watch throughout.

In his duel cultural background, the character struggles to please his family and struggles to hide his sexuality of which he, himself finds is also finding hard to accept. Drug fuelled binges provides him with escapism, whilst denying himself the one thing that could make him happy.

Boys Don't Cry (1999,  R)
Boys Don't Cry
This film left me utterly speechless, such an emotionally charged story based on real events.

This has to be Hillary Swank's role of a lifetime, she obviously put everything into playing this part.

This film is described as 'Powerful and shocking' which describes it perfectly, I felt the power of this film, for quite a while after watching.
9
Totally F***ed Up (1994,  Unrated)
Totally F***ed Up
This film had all the ingredients and potential to be a big impressive film, but something just didn't work for me.

Although it covered all relevant areas, for me the issues covered were not quite shocking enough, we never really got into the minds of the characters, meaning that whilst you could be empathetic or sympathetic to the situations, it never raised any particular emotions, other than confirmation that this kind of thing happens all the time.
10
Law of Desire (La Ley del deseo) (1987,  NC-17)
Law of Desire (La Ley del deseo)
A love triangle evolves into obsession and murder, in this fairly early Almodovar picture. Like many of PD?s films, there are subtle hints of sub-stories which push the boundaries of socially accepted relationships.

A very important role for Antonio Banderas in terms of progressing towards his Hollywood career. With some (fairly) graphic sexual scenes this may not be for everyone, but a good watch for any Almodovar fans.
11
Cruising (1980,  R)
Cruising
Highly controversial in it?s time, both in subject matter and portraying the Gay scene and Leather scene in a bad light. It?s very much a film way ahead of it?s time.

Partially based on true events and a real-life undercover cop situation, the film is of interst on many levels. What the film lacks (to it?s credit) is lack of explanation, justification and a particular view point ? leaving viewers to make their own views on the film itself.

I think this film is of interest more as a controversial piece than perhaps just it?s storyline, but one that was an interesting watch, suggestion and subliminal messaging are key behind it?s non graphic impact.

Moments of confusion from the story can be easily cleared up by the Special Features, which are worth taking a look at.
