Variety Staff, Variety
While there are several mile-wide plot holes and one key under-developed main character, the film emerges as a tight, intriguing old-fashioned drama that gives audiences a hero worth rooting for.
-
Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
The failure of director-writer Peter Hyams to put any weight whatever behind the moral issues (crude as they are) makes this merely violent nonsense.
-
, Time Out
Because both dialogue and direction are none too exciting, one's tired eyes wander endlessly over the space base sets.
-
Vincent Canby, New York Times
A movie of unexpected pleasures.
-
Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing
The early-going intrigue maintains interest, but once the film starts shamelessly riffing on High Noon, all the excitement fritters away.
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
...the film's visual impact may be as important as its main character. (Blu-ray edition)
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
...not a great movie but a reliable one, with another solid performance from Sean Connery, who always makes a staunch, stalwart protagonist of truly heroic proportions.
-
, TV Guide's Movie Guide
Connery and Boyle are fine, but the wholesale lifting of High Noon's plot certainly undermines interest.
-
Chuck O'Leary, FulvueDrive-in.com
Outland is essentially High Noon in outer space, and one of the most entertaining sci-fi flicks ever made.
-
Christopher Null, Filmcritic.com
This harrowing sci-fi flick has mellowed with age over the years, but Sean Connery's performance is still good, and the first couple of acts are still quite engaging.
-
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice
Outland works as a sturdy morality play set uin an unsual environment.

I liked Connery in this, but the story isn't good, and the rest of the cast is forgettable. I don't recommend this movie.

A sci-fi version of High Noon set in deep space, with an early 80's vision of the future, a great soundtrack, and some great performances. Connery is great, Sterhagen brilliant and Berkoff at his psychotic best. Underrated by many and passed off as just another sci-fi but it's a really good thriller, a logical progression respectfully done with obvious affection to the original.

High Noon meets Alien with a pinch of noir. Fun and effective. Very watchable. Obviously an influence on the new BSG.

Outland takes place on the moon of Io, one of Jupiter's moons. Approximately 2500 people live on the tiny mining outpost, mining for titanium. The new marshall (Connery) arrives just as a series of strange suicides is taking place. The storyline of Outland reminds me a little bit of "Hot Fuzz", and the style of Outland is very reminiscent of "Alien". The marshall investigates why the company seems to be covering up the suicides, while the manager of the mining "franchise" (Peter Boyle) makes it clear he doesn't want the marshall interfering. Like an old western, the Manager waits for the shuttle (stagecoach) to arrive with the hired guns. Sort of a "High Noon" with a digital clock. In fact, it's all a space western (there's even swinging saloon doors!). Destry Rides Again, with the good-hearted Doctor woman lending him a little support. Even as a sci-fi fan, I can't say this movie is necessary viewing. It's slow, and there's not alot of action. The thing at the end with the green house is scientifically implausible, as is the fist fight in space suits and zero G. Still, it's not a bad movie, but it is a snoozer.

Not bad, not bad. Apparently this a huge ripoff of High Noon but I don't really give a shit. It's a nice, junky science fiction movie, full of exploding heads and Sean Connery shooting things with like five hundred different shotguns. (I typed "shotfuns" on accident and considered just leaving it.) The ending seems to have nothing to do with the beginning, since it starts as a mystery and ends as a violent space station chase scene, but I guess as a change in gears it's fine.
Fluffy, non-committal entertainment in every sense of the phrase.

Sean Connery kills druggy spacemen. I like when the guys face explodes outside. Not that entertaining as a whole.
-
Sci Fi action with Connery wielding a shotgun. Not too bad and it has some decent action.
-
Shaun Connery fights corruption and drug abuse on an outer space mining colony. There aren't any creatures here, only humans! I liked this suspenseful movie.
-
Efficient sci fi thriller that's basically High Noon made in the style of Alien. The family based scenes are a little embarrassing, but they are mercifully brief and infrequent.

"High Noon" goes sci-fi with Connery as a marshal on the Jupiter moon.

A tense, exciting and visually stunning sci-fi film superbly directed by Peter Hyams. On "Io" the innermost moon of Jupiter there is the mining colony Con-Am 27, a dehumanizing high-tech hellhole where workers are killing themselves because they are being fed a synthetic narcotic, a super amphetamine which not only increases their productivity but also causes them to become psychotic. Federal Marshal O' Neal, played brilliantly by Sir Sean Connery in a superlative star performance who is stationed at this remote colony, will probe into these mysterious suicides with the help of the cranky, sarcastic station doctor Lazarus, played by Frances Sternhagen in a wonderfully feisty performance and uncovers a deadly conspiracy involving the corrupt station general manager Sheppard, played by the late Peter Boyle in deliciously sinister performance. O' Neal wil try to bring down the general manager who is now aware of the Marshal's plans and has dispatched some assassins from a near by space station to kill him, none of the colony populace will help him, he will have to make his stand against these paided killers totally alone. The always dependable Connery effortless carries this picture with his considerable charismatic and commanding presence. Much imagination has been put into creating a dazzling space environment, brilliant production design by Philip Harrison, the striking visual effects by John Sears in this film were made in the early 80s when CGI was not prevalent, the extraordinary detailed miniatures in particular are amazing, there is outstanding cinematography by Stephen Goldblatt and a excellent score by Jerry Goldsmith. A first-rate film entertainment. Highly Recommened.

A surprising stately-paced sci-fi from the early 80's starring Connery as a Marshall who's 'gotta do what a guy's gotta do'. The early deaths suggest this film will be more of a mystery but soon the culprit is revealed and instead the film becomes 'High Noon' in outer space. The corruption at the heart of the film and the grubbiness of the mining colony means that this film could have been set at any time period and didn't need to be a sci, but Hyams keeps the film firmly fixed in reality (I like the use of shotguns rather than ray-guns) and Connery is great in the lead. In fact his presence dilutes the tension towards the end as it's clear who will triumph in the end. Also look out for a young Berkoff giving another manic performance. Decent sci-fi.

"Outland" looks like "Alien," feels like "High Noon" and has Sean Connery in yet another one of his fine, forgotten roles from the 80s. What separates "Outland" from the rest of the crowd is that it deviates from the standard plot and character conventions that tend to bog down other sci-fi action flicks, and it's a lot slower and has a lower body count than you'd expect. These aspects make it slightly more interesting than most, yet it still isn't as striking as it might have been under better direction. "Outland" is a respectable entry in the sci-fi genre, but it's nothing incredibly special.

This film has the feel of something that was intended to be a sci-fi classic, but without space marines, xenomorphs, Stanley Kubrick, or rogue androids it was always going to struggle.
What it does have is - in typical Western style - one man determined to clean up even though everybody else is against him, and it works well enough.
Connery plays the same character he did in The Untouchables, and if the villains had been more than two-dimensional, this film might be more widely acknowledged.

I'm surprised Fred Zinnemann didn't sue for plagiarism. This is practically a remake of "High Noon". Some impressive low-budget miniature work is on display, but Peter Hyams is Peter Hyams and nothing will ever change that.

Sean Connery plays a marshal sent to a mining outpost to investigate some recent accidents. He finds that he is far from welcome and that things may be a bit more serious than he thought. Peter Boyle plays the camps c.o., the father of everybody loves raymond, and you can tell from first meeting that this guy is up to no good. Connery's wife leaves him to take their son back to Earth to raise him there. So alone on an outland mining port he finds himself in a dangerous drug epidemic designed to make the workers produce more in less time. With the help of the local doctor they uncover a cover up that goes all the way up the food chain.

In this sci-fi remake of the classic western High Noon, Sean Connery plays a Federal Marshall on a mining colony on one of Jupiter's moons. He investigates a series of violent attacks and deaths that are caused by a dangerous drug used by the miners, and tracks the sale of the illegal drug all the way to the mining operations chief, played by Peter Boyle. It may be set in outer space, but it has a very realistic feel in the way the mining colony is presented. Director Peter Hyams takes the same visual approach he would later use on 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Everything is very gritty and used looking, right down to the people. Connery is in excellent tough guy form as the marshall who finds himself all alone when his investigation turns up things that no one wants brought to light. Even his own men turn their backs on him when Boyle recruits assassins from Earth to come and murder him. It's a very clautrophobic movie filled with amazing visuals, plenty of action, and even some major gore when some people are exposed to zero atmosphere. It also has a tightly written story filled with suspense, mystery, humor, and plenty of tough guy mano-a-mano.
