Plot:
Preceded by the films "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Oldboy," this final installment of director Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy finds a woman seeking revenge after she is framed and betrayed by...( read more

An "Oldboy" for the girls to enjoy with a female main character as the avenger. The film is a perfect mix of light, dark, humour, violence, shock, imagination, beauty and heart. The music choice really added to the mood.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is a surprisingly poetic finale to Park's excellent Revenge Trilogy. The film fuses the relatively low-key style of "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" with the jet-black humor of "Oldboy," while adding welcome moments of poignancy and sentiment. The film is nowhere near as violent as its predecessors, although a good deal of mayhem takes place offscreen.
Yeong-ae Lee is outstanding as the troubled protagonist Geum-ja, the ex-convict who is seeking redemption as much as revenge. Although the supporting actors -- including several from Park's earlier films -- are uniformly fine, Lee's performance is the heart of the film.
"Lady Vengeance" is difficult to describe without revealing major plot points, as the most memorable scenes come at revelatory moments in the story. Suffice it to say that the climax blends tragedy and hilarity with a degree of success that few directors could hope to match.
I didn't like it a lot. it wasn't a bad movie, with all those twists and plays. but there were times when I couldn't tell whether I'm watching old boy or some new film from the same director. you should watch one film and only one film from some directors, just to keep the joy alive!
oved it. This one was not as brutal and violent as Oldboy and SFMV. The ending was disappointing. It kinda lets you think... too much.. but leaves a craving for a sequel.
The music was awesome too.
The final installment of Chan-wook Park and imo the weakest one, Has great scenes and a beautiful music score and aside from the extremely painful parents watching videos scene it's somehow softer than Oldboy & Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, even the violence is not as exaggerated as those but the story and its narrative isn't good at all but the final scene is great, Anyway Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy shows that he has a great style in filmmaking and I'm really looking forward to see Joint Security Area & I'm a Cyborg, But That's Ok
A stunning film that together with predecessors Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy presents a massively important, vital body of work. Some spoilers ahead.I have to admit that I initially found Lady Vengeance to be heavy going. The stylised flourishes and the apparent coldness of the lead anti-heroine didn't hook me immediately, and it's a much more complex film than the first two parts of Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy. But I persevered, and am very glad I did because this is every bit the masterpiece I was hoping for. Once again, Chan-wok Park has a knack for saying so much with so little words. The human condition is laid bare and it's ugly and it's beautiful. Rarely do you get to see a film that tackles the subjects of vengeance/revenge and redemption/atonement so well and with surprising subtlety, even amid all the fancy camera techniques, graphics and bloody violence. Speaking of the violence, it's interesting to note that, as if often the case, what is not seen is what most lingers; here the most uncomfortable sequence involves the reveal (or non-reveal) of home-video footage. As the story concludes its pivotal, edge-of-the-seat act of group vengeance, it's clear that although there may be an initial catharsis for these characters, they have become shells of themselves, forever haunted or dead inside, or else deranged and trying to occupy themselves with small talk. Vengeance has not been the answer, a conclusion strengthened by the 'fade-to-white' version of the film, and the final act of seemingly self-sacrifice (tinged, as much of what has come before, with biting black humor).
Directed with vision, scripted with economy, beautifully photographed and featuring a memorable music score, this is a resounding success. All of this would be for nothing if the viewer was unable to connect (eventually) with the lead character (the alternate title is Sympathy for Lady Vengeance after all), so thankfully Yeong-ae Lee is pitch perfect as the outwardly blank but internally complicated and multifaceted Geum-ja Lee.
A visual masterpiece (as expected from Chan-wook Park) but I wish he could have more sympathy not only for Lady Vengeance but for the viewer too. It jumps from prior to the crime, to prison, to life after prison in a, at least for me, confusing way. I'm positive that I would have liked it alot better after a second viewing and that the script is actually ingenious but I can only judge based on my experience. Everything else is flawless - from acting to soundtrack.
Visually stunning and a gripping, often disturbing storyline. I found this the most gruelling of the Vengeance Trilogy in the subject matter sense, yet I couldn't look away. The revenge is brutal and amazing... Is it just me or did anyone else find parts of it darkly comical? I don't remember Mr Vengeance or Oldboy to be remotely funny.
the modern day equivalent of M. The best film in the Chanwook Park Vengeance trilogy. It took him two movies to get there - one that is very subdued and avant-garde (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) followed by one that is a formulaic action movie, Oldboy - and here in Lady Vengeance a perfect balance is struck between the script and image making for an excellent, much overlooked, film.
"So Fucked Up" highlight: main character cuts her finger off as offering of forgiveness; schoolmaster rapes his wife casually at dinner table
Less memorable than Oldboy, but amazing to watch. When the 'revenge' begins, you'll know it was worth it.
Another movie in the aptly named "Vengeance Trilogy." Showing yet again the Chan Wook-Park is one of the best film makers working today.
''Listen carefully. Everyone make mistakes. But if you committed a sin, you have to make an atonement for that sin. Atonement, do you know what that means? Big Atonement for big sins. Small Atonement for small sins.''
After thirteen and half years in prison for kidnapping and murdering the boy Park Won-mo, Geum-ja Lee is released and tries to fix her life...
Yeong-ae Lee: Geum-ja Lee
Making comparisons with Park's last two films preceding Lady Vengeance was much more tangible here as with each beautiful piece in a mirroring haze from Oldboy, there was also the exaggerated violence that resided in Mr Vengeance.
The music was again well chosen and played in melancholic, erupting waves without any use of mainstream sources. Some of the compositions were used multiple times and while they might come off a bit repetitive, most of them were either recurring for the sake of certain notions, emotions or themes that the characters were experiencing.
Aside from the tight main casting, many known and capable faces of Korean cinema made interludes throughout the film.
Not much else could be said, apart from them doing just as much as the script allowed. While the visual and musical aspects of Lady Vengeance are vibrant and delicious to the ears, the story here might cause some viewers to contend whether everything makes complete sense.
Playing up good and evil, heaven or hell extremes in Lady by symbolizing Geumja as a devil in angel's clothing or an Angel in dark black clothing, Lady Vengeance then intersperses narrative moments with essential flashbacks to her life in prison. On one hand, she's the saint to newcomers who protects them from the bad prison cell mama-san, while on the other, she's the demonic figure who's plotting murder and to get back at a child killing weirdo who put her there.
She gains respect from these inmates shes locked up with, who play important roles when Geum-ja is released, to exact her 13 years of planning revenge and vengeance.
One of the best scenes in demonstrating this was the making of her twin-trigger handgun, translating poetic justice straight from the hand and arm that gives her the gun, with the many gun tattoos trailing up the arm.
Also her eye make up and her black coat that covers her face in the 2nd half, was wonderfully dramatic and beautiful, showing how focused and determined justice must be served.
Lady Vengeance is quite simply about redemption and revelation, and as we follow the moving drama we may even come to understand something within our own souls.
It is truly a fitting conclusion to this trilogy exploration into hate remorse and revenge.
Great film... Concentrates more on the emotional part of the story... Really well-made with some great shots... Another Korean film with wonderful music... A good way to end this "Revenge trilogy"...
dreamlike and melodic..this variation of revenge jumps from present to past..and if you dont get lost along the way, end up at a statisfying conclusion..a bit graphic in spots but watcheable
Directed by Park Chan-Wook (J.S.A, Oldboy, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance) Lady Vengeance is a very "experimental" or "arty" film. It's twisted, dark and humorous, much like Oldboy, but seems to be both lighter and darker at the same time. It's like Mr. ...(read more)Chan-Wook took his ultra violent revenge themes and infused them with fairy tails from the Brothers Grimm and Jean-Pierre Jeunet Films (Amelie, City Of Lost Children) while adding the complex time structures of Tarantino flicks to make Lady Vengeance.
It's has all the basic elements of plot and character you'd expect but is otherwise beyond description. It's not easily categorized, or even watched, it's so disturbing. And the worst kind of disturbing, violent but well motivated through the story while light enough visually for you to fill in the blanks with your imagination. The blood isn't so over the top that it becomes cartoony or ineffective.
If you're a movie fan who likes foreign/art/horror films I recommend Lady Vengeance, though some viewers may be put off by how different/bizarre/strange it is, not to mention slow. At least, slow compared to typical action films. It's more aligned with drama flicks in it's pacing.
Overaté. Voix off fatiguante, encore un autre film asiatique basé sur un build up avec un climax décevant.
A very interesting, but disjointed movie. I got lost near the beginning, but loved certain parts of it, especially when the main character was speaking to her daughter through the translator who she was about to get killed because he was the cause. Very clever. It was just too irritating at times which is a real shame, as it was impressive.
Chan-wook Park brings us another great installment of vengeance, this time lovely as hell. And not in a metaphorical way.
excellent way to end trilogy. i loved how a female was the main character because it really gave a new perspective on what a female may do with her revenge plot compared to in oldboy where it was a male. this movie is violent, but is very elegant and quite beautiful both in how it is shot and the music present in the film. the lead actress has an original beauty that is quite sad, yet makes her character all the more wonderful for the film. these movies are great best revenge thrillers out there.
Very twisted, very explicite movie.
Personally I like oldboy the Best of the 3 but this has it's place.
this is movie is awesome!!!!! beatifull violent even funny i love this movie and the way the story is told ...
Chan-Wook Park has gone from creating a great revenge film to making it into a form of art. Don't think I've seen a film go into that much detail into the process of getting revenge, and building up to the finale. Just like his other films you can appreciate them much more by understanding why there was so many scenes at the beginning that at first didn't seem to do much, but after putting everything together everything is as it should be. The coolest adult trilogy I've seen thus far.
