I thought thismovie was really good despite all the bad press going around it. The effects were mostly natural and realistic and I also really like most of the cast. good movie, graphics are outstanding, flawless. But the plot itself is controversial. No one knows when is it gonna end. And I don't think its gonna be anything like this.

    We Were Warned.

    2, 012 pounds of grade-A monkey crap!

Thousands of years ago, the Mayan culture created a 5,125-year-long calendar. That calendar had a beginning, and it has an end. The end is prophesied as being on the date of December 21, 2012 of the Gregorian c...( read more)alendar. It is now 2009 and the world's top scientists have discovered that due to intense solar radiation bombardment, the Earth's core is heating up to a dangerous temperature, which will eventually cause crustal displacement. When the world's leaders are alerted of this, they begin plans in order to save whatever souls they can for the doomsday of 2012.

Roland Emmerich just couldn't resist depicting a movie of the ancient Mayan doomsday prophecy of 2012. All that was going on inside his twisted mind was explosions, explosions, and more explosions. For people looking for sheer cinematic destruction on a global scale, then they need not look any further than 2012. But for people who have a brain, be warned, the filmmakers spent less time working on the plot for this film, than I did writing this review. Emmerich can direct explosions and destruction. Everyone who watches movies regularly has probably seen an Emmerich catastrophe, whether it be Independence Day, Godzilla, or The Day After Tomorrow, and although his films are not the worst ever in cinema, you know that they aren't great. Emmerich is a director from the guild of idiotic disaster flicks from the 1970s. The 1970s was the golden age of the disaster film, with flicks such as Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Earthquake (1974) and The Towering Inferno (1974) highlighting that decade. That's the kind of guy Emmerich is. He isn't part of the elite filmmakers of this age with Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, and Peter Jackson to name a few.

90% of the acting in this film is lame because, like I've stated before, what comes first in an Emmerich and co. movie is destruction. The main character, Jackson Curtis, is played by John Cusack. Now, John Cusack is a guy I don't mind seeing on screen because of his charisma. Therefore, I didn't mind his acting here, and I'm glad there was an enjoyable actor of mine to see in this flick. Danny Glover plays the President of the United States, Thomas Wilson. Glover I didn't mind seeing in this flick either. I guess he is in this flick to show us how fast Obama is going to age due to the amount of stress of being in the Oval Office, and having to worry about the end of the world. Woody Harrelson plays conspiracy theorist and crazed hermit of Yellowstone, Charlie Frost. Harrelson is very funny as the nut job who heralds to people over the radio that the end is extremely fucking nigh. On a side not, Harrelson compared his character to the mythological Greek figure Cassandra, whose prophesies were dismissed. The rest of the cast is just lame as dog-shit because they can't do anything with their 2-D characters. If you don't like the rest of the supporting cast as actors, then you are not going to care for them, no matter how many tonnes of flame, water, dirt, and rock are falling on top of them.

The special effects are good, but not perfect. In a lot of the scenes, you can clearly tell where more polish should have been done on the CGI. Seeing massive tsunamis swallow the Himalayas is nice, and so is seeing the USS John F. Kennedy being swept away over the streets of Washington, D.C. Religious monuments are destroyed in this film, an example being the Sistine Chapel, but Emmerich didn't have the balls to destroy the Kaaba because it is of Islamic value. Emmerich hates religion, but doesn't want to start World War 3...yet.

Special effects are an entertaining value of cinematic spectacle. But, having nothing but special effects as the most important thing in your movie is like placing sex as the most important thing in a relationship. Yes, the sex is good, but everything is boring and awkward until the sex happens again. Roland Emmerich, you, along with Michael Bay (Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen) and Stephen Sommers (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), all came out with explosive but idiotic nonsense in 2009. You are all equally responsible for making audiences want more stupidity in their movies over the course of the first decade of the millennium. Get your act together, pull your head out of your ass, and learn from the pages of quality filmmakers that do not disappoint movie goers who desperately want a great blend of special effects, talented acting, and an awesome story. If you can't deliver that, then get out of cinema.

The end is just the beginning.

Great special effect, lame story line. It's just another heroic story of a father, it's kind of typical for Hollywood movies. But two thumbs up for the special effect.

An enjoyable, exciting, entertaining ride! No one could have done better disaster films than Roland Emmerich himself. Just couldn't understand what people are complaining about...

An amazing film. One of the best disaster films i've seen in a long time. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and i look forward to seeing it again.
  • December 14, 2009
It was kind of over the top. I t was ur typical end-of-the-world story on a whole new level of exaggeration with a mediocre back story. John Cusack has had similar roles in several movies before and it just doesn't work for me. All the while i was thinking of some amazing aircraf...( read more)t or bunker that'll shelter them in the end, but it was the ol' noah's ark that saved the day! A little disappointing...
