2012 Reviews and Ratings

This movie delivered what I expected of it - a shitload of shiny special effects, and a mediocre (& poorly acted for the most part) plot that kept me entertained by how bad it was.

i think that there's something about this movie close to the reality because Earthquakes can be that much destructive and we can't exclude this kind of mass in the future or as we can say "the near future". i loved the way the government react in that critical situation. I think...( read more) that the president should be more helpful by being the leader and not drop it down to others because it will be a mass as we've seen in this movie, so others will try to take control and everybody will act like leaders.

Rescatable: Las escenas donde se vé inmensidades desmoronandose. Lo demás es una soberana patada en los huevos. Horrible el guion!

This was an awesome movie! It's a little freaky in that I walked out wondering if it could actually happen.

I quite liked this movie. Except they made it quite long when they didn't need to. They could of cut some bits out to make it shorter. It didn't need to be so long. And some bit of it were a tad unbelievable. (I think that nearly most of a movie like this needs to be believable t...( read more)o sell it) But good otherwise and very exciting.

Special effects are incredible, real edge-of-the-seat stuff, story isn't that developed and some of the acting is a bit off but still, loved every minute.

Not bad for a world ending cliche. Most critics have written this movie off as below the expectation but I quite liked some parts of it. The graphics are incredible and the imagination is appreciated. Sure there are parts that make it seem like a sappy bollywood flick - like that...( read more) of the characters surviving the destruction despite the fact that they are right in the middle of it. Over all it makes for a good one time watch. Nice to know that somebody is recognizing how fuck all our government, humanity and monetary systems are and are imagining its complete destruction. Nice.

Far-fetched heroics and superlative special effects cannot raise this
mind-numbing disaster movie above its hopeless generic origins. None of
the heroes are unusual, charismatic, or interesting. MARTIAN CHILD star
John Cusack does his dad role again while Woody Harrelson plays a
...( read more)wack-job broadcaster. The turgid story turns into a global odyssey from
Southern California to China and the pathes of a motley collection of
protagonists interwine as they struggle to save their own lives along
with their families. Not surprisingly, the special effects overshadow
the characters. The California and Las Vegas calamity scenes are
tour-de-force, but they are wasted in a mundane melodrama about a
desperate dad who rescues his cute ex-wife Kate Curtis (Amanda Peet of
SYRIANA) and their two young kids Noah & Lilly Curtis (Liam James and
Morgan Lily) along step-dad Gordon Silberman (Thomas McCarthy of
DUPLICITY) from certain death in Southern California. As protagonist Jackson Curtis, Cusack drives a limo for Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov
(Zlatko Buric of the PUSHER movies) and has written a science fiction
novel that, though it flopped, impressed government scientist Adrian
Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor of AMERICAN GANGSTER) sufficiently that he wants to preserve it for posterity. The GOLDENEYE style scene in a Russian
cargo jet plunging into an enormous chasm that was once the Las Vegas
strip is the second-best scene after the wholesale destruction of Santa
Monica. Some of the back projection looks really obvious. Not only is
screenplay by writer & director Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser
incredibly pedestrian, but it also takes them some time to build up a
head of steam. Ostensibly, they hang their narrative on the ancient Mayan
calendar that predicts an earthly cataclysm in the year 2012. The movie 2012 unfolds three years before the events with some dull exposition.
Although this science fiction fantasy lacks the excitement of
INDEPENDENCE DAY, 2012 surpasses THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW
because it is an international disaster movie. The breathless pace of
the California scenes is not repeated, and the film sinks into a coma
during the second half of its interminable two-and-a-half-hour plus running time with its final scenes in China where everybody is rushing to climb aboard a number of huge arks. These large commodious vessels look pretty cool. Of course, a last-minute complication crops up that prevents the American ark from getting under way and it should come as no surprise that intrepid Jackson Curtis has to save the day. Boy, does this guy have lung power. Danny Glover of the LETHAL WEAPON franchise is cast as a compassionate but older Obama-type U.S. President who prefers to stay behind and the closest person to a villain that 2012 boasts is Wilson's paunchy chief of staff, Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt of DONT SAY A WORD), who has no problems leaving the poor behind in the wake of destruction. 2012 goes from apocalypse wow to apocalypse bow-wow. This is the second movie that Cusack and Peet have co-starred in and the same is true for Platt.

Great film for special effects. How mant times did I duck? Live in Vegas and afterwards looked for signs of destruction...lol this is a no brainer and great escape movie to forget the world outside!
  • January 5, 2010
I love disaster movies but they all feel the same. I wished this one was different in some way and it kinda was, but its basically the same. But still good fun and wonderful effects.
  • January 5, 2010
the effect, again, is so great. but the plot is just so-so. there is no point on the plot, it's like it focused on the effect and forgot the plot. the ending isn't satisfying.
  • January 5, 2010
Stupid but entertaining, I guess. After the movie, you'll laugh on how stupid a lot of things were. Yet, I think it's better that way.
