Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier - and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind. -- (C) Sony Pictures

Critic Reviews
-
Richard Brody, New Yorker
The late-eighties TV series is rebooted with jolts of sentiment, personal discovery, and wild comedy.
-
Roger Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service
Like high school itself, 21 Jump Street hits the wall about halfway in and even prom night can't save it.
-
William Goss, Film.com
The whole crew makes clear its affections for action cinema, trashy television and the YouTube generation alike while having fun at the expense of all three.
-
Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger
A raucous, raunchy comedy.
-
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
This bracing new take on 21 Jump Street has a playful spark all its own. It's a blast.
-
Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail
A try-anything, fitfully amusing muddle that wears its mocking cynicism a bit too proudly.
-
Brian Gibson, Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)
A floppy cross of high-school movie and buddy-cop comedy. Overdoses on flaccid penis and vagina 'jokes,' indulges in the ain't-this-cool?!ness of a cop-action flick, and passes out on the cliché-couch of bromance.
-
Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com
The movie is perfectly pleasant, a smidgen too aware of itself but consistently sharp.
-
Sam Bathe, Fan The Fire
While the film struggles at the start as Tatum and Hill share little chemistry, they improve minute by minute and are one of the shining lights by the end, their journey boasting a surprising emotional pull.
-
Charlie Lyne, Ultra Culture
Feels like it's doing something new with the teen genre, while still acknowledging its debt to the classics that came before it.
-
Philip Martin, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
t's less fun when the guns come out in the final act, but there's a moment late in the game that redeems the movie's predictable beats, before the whole thing dissolves into entropy and disorder.
-
Blake Howard, 2UE That Movie Show
21 Jump Street is nothing like the original series. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have a great chemistry and the strong beginning and ending do a pretty good job disguising the flabby middle. It's crass, self effacing, 'meta', stupidity and it works.
-
Linda Cook, Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)
Clever, profane and action-packed, '21 Jump Street' fairly leaps onto the big screen as one of the most enjoyable movies of the (still-admittedly young) year.

Rob Humanick, Projection Booth
A high-water mark for recent mainstream comedies. Consistently amusing and frequently uproarious.
-
Bruce Bennett, Spectrum (St. George, Utah)
Raunchy and profane by design, nothing like the 80s TV show, nonetheless hilarious adult comedy - especially the first hour or so.
-
Paul Chambers, CNNRadio
Yes, some of the movie's funny bits were in the trailer. After all, they were trying to get you to buy a ticket. But, this is one of the rare comedies that delivers even more than promised.
-
Dominic Corry, Flicks.co.nz
The best comedy to be released so far this year.
-
Jeff Bayer, The Scorecard Review
I'm as surprised as you that this film could end up being the funniest of 2012.
-
Leonard Maltin, indieWIRE
The film isn't long, but it runs dry at a certain point, and tries to rescue itself by morphing into an action movie, with only middling results.

A wickedly enjoyable blast of a movie. An excellent and hilarious comedy thats raunchy, rude and extreamly entertaining. A full-out fun and explosive action-packed comedy thats over the top with great character moments and zany antics. It takes the classic 80`s series and re-vamps it to be a wildly hysterical spoof. This is the funniest movie i have seen this year so far. One of the most enjoyable buddy comedies in years. Hill and Tatum are a comic dream team, they are just a blast to watch. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are outragious together, they are the most surprising and awesome comedy team in a long time. Ice Cude is absolutely hilarious, he`s never been funnier. Johnny Depp returns to his tv role in a hilarious cameo that just adds to the fun. This movie is just pure non-stop fun from start to finish. -

<i>"You are here because you some Justin Beaver, Miley Cyrus lookin' muthas."</i> A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. <center><font size=+2 face="Century Schoolbook"><b><u>REVIEW</u></b></font></center> Even though it was very popular in the '80s, I don't have any affection for the TV series 21 Jump Street. I simply know it as the project which made Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco famous (well, the term "fame" is a very relative one in the second case), so I went to watch the film adaptation 21 Jump Street with absolutely neutral expectations. However, to my huge surprise, this ended up being a hilarious comedy with a simultaneously simple and intelligent screenplay, and which also changed my opinion about an actor I previously couldn't swallow. To start with, we have the perfect chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who make their likable "bromance" totally credible. Besides, they both bring a lot of enthusiasm to their performances. Hill had already proved the fact that he's a good actor; but the true revelation of this film is Tatum, who had deeply displeased me in the other movies I saw him in with his inexpressive face and bland presence. However, he takes absolute possession of his character in 21 Jump Street, and he made me laugh with quite a frequency in this comedy. And during the brief emotive moments from the film, I found him sincere. I'm truly surprised by the work he made in here. Another big pro from 21 Jump Street is the screenplay. Instead of taking itself seriously, like other films based on TV series did, the film doesn't loose the opportunity to laugh at its TV origin, at the clichés which infest the cop cinema, and at the common stereotypes from juvenile comedies. Besides, it perfectly develops the main characters and the evolution of their dynamic. Besides, Hill and Tatum had the support of an excellent ensemble of comedians in supporting roles who make even the most irrelevant character memorable; among them, I can mention Ellie Kemper, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, Chris Parnell and the great Nick Offerman. The only thing I can say against 21 Jump Street is that it looses a little bit of cohesion near the ending. Nevertheless, I had a great time while watching this film, and I enthusiastically recommend it as an excellent comedy with a cynical and acid screenplay which constantly made me laugh. -

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are insanely comical playing two of the most immature cops since Mike Lowrey and Mar Burnett (Bad Boys). Inside the film's rude and very raunchy gags is a rather intelligent spoof of typical high school movie cliches. Not only do the two leads make for a surprisingly potent comedy duo, but Ice Cube also gives a great turn as the trash-talking Captain Dickson. He chews up scenery like it is his last acting job ever and that is why he is so glorious in the role. Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise make cameo appearances, playing the same characters from the original TV show, in a scene that is also pretty funny. This is a comedy that knows what it is and consistently delivers on the jokes while giving the audience a wildly joyful ride. I couldn't remember the last time I had this much fun with a comedy. -

Featuring some very funny inspired jokes, a well used cast and a hilarious cameo appearance from original TV Series star Johnny Depp, 21 Jump Street adds up to one of the better high school comedies released in recent years. It's a likable, nostalgic and smart comedy that expresses its outmost respect for fans of the original show, and has the unfamiliar reboot quality that has the power to bring in some new fans. It never reaches the comedic ranks of Superbad, but it's entertaining enough. -

Based on the classic TV show that ran in the late 80's, "21 Jump Street" is a striking success of a re-make, that delivers scene after scene of side-splitting fun! If I were to boil it down to its essentials, I'd say there are two prime elements to which its winning formula can be linked: First of all, there's the wonderful self-distance. It knows it's a re-make and isn't shy to poke fun at itself. Whenever you think "cliché", it immediately hits you back with a witty remark, which adresses the very stereotype that occured to you. It's almost parodic in that sense, throwing around the type of gags and meta humor you might find in one of the "Naked Gun" flicks. More than that, it's got a great and very funny script. Jonah Hill, who did an amazing slim-down for his role, displays superb rapport with Channing Tatum, as two underachieving cops, who are sent on an undercover mission to infiltrate a local high school, in an attempt of bringing down a synthetic drug ring. Hilarity ensues, and it's just pure enjoyment watching these two trying not to screw up their assignment. Not since Leslie Nielsen's days as Lieutenant Frank Drebin have I seen a cop comedy this funny. A crackerjack laugh riot, that will have your smile muscles working overtime and then some! Without giving anything anyway, there's also a cool surprise in the end for fans of the original show. So be sure to stick around for that supremely awesome treat! -

21 Jump Street works best when it's satirizing teenagers. The story begins as a mockery of police procedurals but it ultimately becomes just as much a riff on the perils of high school life. It's here that the humor really takes off. Yes there's the usual supply of crass schtick you'd expect in an R rated farce in 2012. The targets can be juvenile at times. But for every childish penis joke, there are several clever ones that satirize conventions. There is some intelligence in the script. The high school scenes as Jenko and Schmidt attempt to do their jobs while still trying to fit in, are hilarious. Actors Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have refreshing chemistry together with Tatum showing an unexpected gift for comedic timing. Given his talented work here, I hope Tatum attempts more comedy roles in the future. I think where 21 Jump Street really surpasses expectations in the way it subverts stereotypes and mines an equal amount of humor and heart. Hill and Tatum are likable and display genuine camaraderie that's essential in any decent buddy film. The jokes don't always work. Some of it's vulgar, but when the script aims higher it truly succeeds. When all is said and done, the relevant question you must ask yourself when reviewing a comedy is, Did you laugh? And for me the answer was, Yes I did and quite a bit. -

Never saw the original TV series as it wasn't really on UK TV much as I recall so I'm unable to really comment on comparisons, but after reading up it does seem like this comedy is relatively close to the source material. Basically some young looking dudes are put into a local high school to crack down on a drugs ring, the reason they are used for the case? they are young looking, pretty much the same deal as the TV show. Of course this film is akin to older films 'The Dukes of Hazzard' and 'Starsky n Hutch' in the sense that it mocks the original source and teen/cop flicks in general. So in a spoof type way this is quite good, I found myself enjoying the typical piss taking humour as the two leads start off in high school themselves and move up into the police force together. You know what kind of gags and visual stunts to expect, a blend of 'American Pie' and 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' with a hint of 'Naked Gun'...and it works just fine. For me the film started to wane from around the midway point though as the guys get emotionally attached to people they meet in the school (very predictably) and things start to get a bit mushy. You know whats gonna happen in the end, its very formulaic and cliched but it does put a smile on your face for sure. I've heard a sequel is planned but I really don't think that is necessary as this barely keeps its head above water if we are honest. I did like the two cameos in the finale though, nice touch. -

They're too old for this shift. Hilarious 21 Jump Street is incredibly funny. So far this years funniest film. I laughed full time throughout the movie. This is the type of movie that after you watch it you constantly keep quoting the lines, because they stick to you like glue. Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) are two underachieving cops. After ruining an operation, both of them are sent to 21 Jump Street, where they are assigned to infiltrate and go back into high school to bring down a new group of drug dealers that have invented a new synthetic drug. Like Captain Dickson (Cube) says, "Your assignment is simple: infiltrate the dealers, find the supplier. " Turns out things aren't so simple. Remember how annoying it got when kids after watching Superbad or Step Brothers constantly kept quoting lines from the movie? Well get ready because 21 Jump Street will have the same effect. The movie is fast paced, smart, action packed, and humorous. I simply loved this movie. This is only the second movie, out of 4 that I have seen by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and I have to say these guys are genius. They are able to bring back a comedy that doesn't have to be R-rated and dirty. These guys are young and they know what they are doing, and although its not their original idea - considering the movie comes from an old tv show starring Johnny Depp, Lord and Miller still kick-ass. As for the actors in 21 Jump Street, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, they work well together. They contrast each other well and don't steel each others spotlight, and I know that's hard considering we have a comedy actor (Hill) and a ladiesman actor (Tatum), but both of these actors have a natural bond worth noting. At first I was afraid of Tatum taking this role, but he totally made me shut up, he really blasted it! Overall their chemistry was fantastic. Plus we have Ice Cube, Rob Riggle and Dave Franco that were fantastic. The cast was great overall. Honestly this movie blew me away. I loved how they made fun of everything including themselves. The plot might be silly but it's well grounded and fast paced. The movie never dragged, it made me laugh all the time. I say you should go see it because it is not just a good cop comedy, but a good action film too. Captain Dickson: Hey! Hey! Stop fuckin with korean jesus. he aint got time for your problems, hes busy with korean shit! -

Bearable but unimaginative. Hollywood churns out hundreds of films like this because they generate a substantial amount of revenue. Mindless prattle interspersed with a few lowbrow laughs. -

So much cursing and dick humor! HILARIOUS! I'm really starting to dig Channing Tatum's meathead deadpan. The redefinition of high school hierarchy is relevant - the new cool kids are crunchy, groovy, hipster econerds - and the buddy-buddyness is sweet and over-the-top. -

I had no idea this movie was going to be such a scream! It's wonderful, silly, clever and really really funny. I really loved Jenko and Schmidt. Channing Tatum, it turns out, is a rather brilliant comedic actor. I love the way he sends up his brawny hot persona that he'd cultivated in other movies. The biggest strength of this movie is the chemistry between Tatum and Hill; I've seen other buddy cop movies, but this is the one that stands out in my mind because it shows you how the two made friends in the first place. Since you see that, you care so much more about what happens to them. In fact, all the characters are more three dimensional than their equivalents in other action movies. I was amused to no end by the alienation felt by Jenko in his second time through high school. It's become a social structure where it's no longer cool to punch people, which makes him uncomfortable, which makes him want to punch people. Cool has been redefined, and Jenko gets caught in this feedback loop of impotent frustration. Schmidt is also surprised that he can't just pick up where he left off, since he now fits the new definition of cool. The role reversal is delicious. I even like the way even peripheral characters are interesting, from the school staff to the other Jump Street operatives. Please don't dismiss this movie out of turn. It's a real gem. -

It's a raucous comedy, and in that regard, it's very, very good. The whole film is logically flawed, but that really doesn't matter because the audience is too busy laughing their asses off at the meaningless jokes that make up the entire film. As a film production, 21 Jump Street is poor. As a comedy, 21 Jump Street is excellent. As a comedic film production, 21 Jump Street is above average. Also, surprisingly good acting performances all around. Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Rob Riggle, and Brie Larson all were fantastic in their defined roles. -

'21 Jump Street' is exactly what you expect: a raunchy, fun, buddy cop flick. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have surprisingly good chemistry, and the action scenes are not only explosive, but also humorous. The movie starts coming apart when it attempts to get more serious, mostly because it's getting serious about a pretty juvenile message. Overall, it's pretty funny, and very entertaining, so I'd recommend it to others. Grade: B- -

Directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, Columbia Pictures, 2012. Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco and Rob Riggle. Genre: Action, Comedy. Question: Did you think I would review this film? Well, I did not. In fact, I flat out said I was NOT going to review it, but I couldn't keep ignoring all the chatter about how 21 Jump Street was surprisingly good. And now I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I need to stop presuming the worst when I see a preview. Yeah, I said that. To be completely honest, when I saw the trailer for 21Jump Street, and I saw it several times because I didn't think I would end up seeing the movie, I immediately thought, "That's not how the TV show was. It wasn't a comedy, goof-ball, buddy genre. Pass." Yes, I watched the original show and really enjoyed it. It was on while I was in high school so I was smack dab in the middle of the perfect demographic. Plus, I thought Johnny Depp was a fox (and still do)! So with that confession out the way, seeing Channing Tatum (who ain't too shabby) and Jonah Hill as an odd couple lead characters I was turned off. But I saw it anyway. Well, I must say the pairing worked and made the film a decent one. First, let me say that both actors have slowly become more appealing with their recent projects and as I view them in films. Jonah Hill was fantastic in Moneyball and Channing Tatum was down-right adorable in The Vow. I have become fans of theirs now and you know what happens then? All bets are off and I will probably see most, if not all, of their film from now on. (Yes, I have seen some of their other work). Second, although the script is vastly different than the TV show the writers took an approach to tell the high school undercover cop tale that I wasn't expecting. What was it? Well, I am NOT going to tell you except to give you a hint and say: opposite. That's it. It's my only clue. It was brilliant and why I think another reason 21 Jump Street worked. Finally, back to the actors, Tatum and Hill. I mentioned that the pairing of the two completely different personas matched up well. As they say, opposites attract and it's true here. Jonah Hill plays the nerdy, over-achiever, low self-esteem-just-wanting-to-be-liked-and-fit-in character. And Channing Tatum, charmingly, pulls off the overly confident, not-so-bright, athletic character. They knew of each other in high school and then meet again at the police academy later in life and end up as partners. The balance of what the other lacked or needed was artfully, albeit somewhat juvenile and moronically portrayed at times, calibrated. Would people of my parents' generations like this film? Probably not. It wasn't made for them in mind. It was made for today's youth and the nostalgia-seeking generation that I am currently in. Just to let you all know - this paragraph is laced with hints - hints on what? Well, I am not gonna say but read it carefully as I never leave hints like this - ever! My favorite thing: Well, if I told you it might ruin something for those who will see it. My least favorite thing: That during one scene I was laughing so hard and trying not to throw up all at the same time. Rating: R Length: 109 minutes Review: 6 out of 10 -

"21 Jump Street" is the most consistently effective comedy I've seen this year, and perhaps even in the past few. It balances smaller character moments with over-the-top farce and zany action; and magically makes none of these factors feel out of place. On paper it might sound like the typically messy Hollywood action-comedy, but the film knows what it wants to be and finds a very precise tone and stride. -

In high school, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was a dork and Jenko (Channing Tatum) was the popular jock.
