The FBI, sensing a chance to use this small-time con to bring down big-target Sparazza, places Aces into protective custody-under the supervision of two agents dispatched to Aces' Lake Tahoe hideout. When word of the price on Aces' head spreads into the community of ex-cons and cons-to-be, it entices bounty hunters, thugs-for-hire, smokin' hot vixens and double-crossing mobsters to join in the hunt. With all eyes on Tahoe, this rogues' gallery collides in a comic race to hit the jackpot and rub out Aces.

Many words come to minds when it comes to this movie: sick twisted, violent, and very funny.

...( read more )

It's one wildly entertaining and original thriller. Its an intense, hard-core, explosive, gritty, brutally shocking and a red-hot pshycho rollar-coaster ride. Smart, stylish, frequently funny and totally over the top. Filled with explosive action and mind-blowing suspense. An ene... ...( read more )

It's set up and deliver as Carnahan puts up a situation causing a great deal of contraact killers to converge on one location (and one another) to take out one mark. Loses its focus at times, but has its share of moments.

Wow, what a film! The content is so busy, that it really is hard to keep up with the plot and I?m sure will need a few more viewings before I fully understand it all. The Director has managed to capture a Tarantino style film with the well developed characters and the build up,... ...( read more )

A convoluted plot that doesn't make too much sense. When you do make sense of it, it kind of seems dumb. I found myself not caring about the story about halfway through. At least the fight scenes were cool.

Claudia Puig, USA Today

It wants to be a Tarantino-esque dark comedy about gun-slinging, substance-abusing lowlifes. But instead it's a convoluted, slap-happy, humorless bloodfest. full review

David Edelstein, New York Magazine

Did Carnahan think these sickening scenes would give Smokin' Aces a moral complexity that's generally absent from this genre? I think they make the picture seem even more morally bankrupt. full review

One wild super-kinetic ride. It's Oceans 11 meets Pulp Fiction and sooooooo much more. full review

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Smokin Aces is a Viagra suppository for compulsive action fetishists and a movie that may not only be dumb in itself, but also the cause of dumbness in others. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Carnahan creates a spectacle of nihilism, with a number of scenes of carnage, including a shootout in an elevator. This vision is no mere gesture, as it is for, say, Guy Ritchie. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

If you're fond of the old 'Is he dead yet' gimmick, there are lots of those. full review

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

It's ludicrous, but not as ludicrous as the ending -- an exhausting game of Twister that'll leave you feeling stupid or cheated or both. full review

January 26, 2007
Kurt Loder, MTV

There are way too many characters to keep track of, they're too cartoonish to care about, and the plot is madly baroque in a most wearisome way. full review

January 25, 2007
Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

But Smokin' Aces is all pumped up with no place to go, and the crashing letdown, as the rush fades and the ammo shells lie spent across the screen, is heavy indeed. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Best consumed with pizza and lots of brewskis, Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces is shamelessly and unapologetically a guy movie. full review

This movie was great. I spent all my time trying to figure out how the assassins were going to get in that I didn't even think about the bigger picture of the FBI agent.

This film starts out kind of slow yet interesting, then becomes quite intriguing with it's several colorful competing factions and independent characters. (Ryan Reynolds continues to shine).
The movie continues to build on that notion, further developing it's key characters and showcasing some kick-ass action sequences. All is great until the very forced and completely obvious flawed ending. I don't want to give away the ending, however if you do see this movie, ask yourself "If this case is SO important, Where are the guards? And more importantly why in the hell did Andy Garcia's character just walk away?" These are inexcusably forced plot points that are even evident in it's first viewing.
    Poor endings ruin good movies...period!!
