Many words come to minds when it comes to this movie: sick twisted, violent, and very funny.

If you want a Shoot-em up movie this one is it. Quite alot of familiar faces which is cool, & unlike other movies that have major star power (or even just alot of minor star power) this is actually decent. i wasn't bored watching. The action is intense you could probabably watch...( read more) it a few times & still miss something in one of the fight scenes. (shoot first time I ever watched it I didn't realise That was Chris Pine in with those crazy brothers.

It's one wildly entertaining and original thriller. Its an intense, hard-core, explosive, gritty, brutally shocking and a red-hot psycho roller-coaster ride. Smart, stylish, original, frequently funny and totally over the top. Filled with explosive action and mind-blowing suspens...( read more)e that will knock you out. An energetic bloodbath that just keeps getting better. A fantastic cast of first-rate talents. Jeremy Piven is electrifying. Ryan Reynolds is a pure knockout. Andy Garcia is terrific. The cast is outstanding. Riveting and exhilarating. A pure guilty pleasure. An awesome adrenaline-rush. It has surprising human affection. Director, Joe Carnahan has taken his style in directing to create a high-octane, barrels blazing classic with a rhythm all of it's own. It thrives on chaos like Tony Scott's Domino or Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers.

Smokin' Aces is not such a bad film. Its got violence, double crossing, and the mob. Only just the fact that I've seen it all before and the end cascaded like any other thriller with a twist that you didnt expect. Now had the things I expected happened it may have been better. If...( read more) you like this watch Domino another film, nearly exactly the same, different actors.

Being a huge fan of Ryan Reynold's, I thought it was time to see this movie. I enjoyed the ride this movie takes you on. Bits of twists and turns. Good acting by all. There is a lot of talent in this movie. Surprised that Alicia was good. The movie started off slow, but eventually picked up the pace. Lots of action and really good twisted characters. It's a good little action flick.

    Action-packed shoot 'em up.
  • January 25, 2010
The fight scenes are cool, but I didn't like that it was often boring and near impossible to follow.

Critic Reviews

September 22, 2007
Claudia Puig, USA Today

It wants to be a Tarantino-esque dark comedy about gun-slinging, substance-abusing lowlifes. But instead it's a convoluted, slap-happy, humorless bloodfest. full review

January 30, 2007
David Edelstein, New York Magazine

Did Carnahan think these sickening scenes would give Smokin' Aces a moral complexity that's generally absent from this genre? I think they make the picture seem even more morally bankrupt. full review

Pete Hammond, Maxim

One wild super-kinetic ride. It's Oceans 11 meets Pulp Fiction and sooooooo much more. full review

January 26, 2007
A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Smokin Aces is a Viagra suppository for compulsive action fetishists and a movie that may not only be dumb in itself, but also the cause of dumbness in others. full review

January 26, 2007
Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Carnahan creates a spectacle of nihilism, with a number of scenes of carnage, including a shootout in an elevator. This vision is no mere gesture, as it is for, say, Guy Ritchie. full review

January 26, 2007
Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

If you're fond of the old 'Is he dead yet' gimmick, there are lots of those. full review

January 26, 2007
Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

It's ludicrous, but not as ludicrous as the ending -- an exhausting game of Twister that'll leave you feeling stupid or cheated or both. full review

January 26, 2007
Kurt Loder, MTV

There are way too many characters to keep track of, they're too cartoonish to care about, and the plot is madly baroque in a most wearisome way. full review

January 25, 2007
Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

But Smokin' Aces is all pumped up with no place to go, and the crashing letdown, as the rush fades and the ammo shells lie spent across the screen, is heavy indeed. full review

January 25, 2007
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Best consumed with pizza and lots of brewskis, Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces is shamelessly and unapologetically a guy movie. full review

This movie was great. I spent all my time trying to figure out how the assassins were going to get in that I didn't even think about the bigger picture of the FBI agent.

This film starts out kind of slow yet interesting, then becomes quite intriguing with it's several colorful competing factions and independent characters. (Ryan Reynolds continues to shine).
The movie continues to build on that notion, further developing it's key characters and showcasing some kick-ass action sequences. All is great until the very forced and completely obvious flawed ending. I don't want to give away the ending, however if you do see this movie, ask yourself "If this case is SO important, Where are the guards? And more importantly why in the hell did Andy Garcia's character just walk away?" These are inexcusably forced plot points that are even evident in it's first viewing.
    Poor endings ruin good movies...period!!
