    REVIEW #666

I saw this film at the Toronto After Dark film festival and I think this was the gem of the lot. I have a soft spot for short horror films, and this group of four is such a multiplicity of tones and aesthetics. Each film stands out and is great in its own way, alth...( read more)ough some are better than others. Tit-For-Tat seemed to rely a little too heavily on computer animation, but I loved its ending. Happiness suffered from a slightly tired premise, but its execution was really skilled and the film totally engaging. My two favorites were the two most tonally different: Last Fright and In The Middle. Last Fright was a really terrifying movie about passive-aggression and guilt, all backdropped by a well-executed midair ghost story. It's a very rich plot for such a short film, and deserves a lot of praise. My absolute favorite of the bunch though is In The Middle, which is a horror-comedy about paranoid pop culture junkies who take a white-water rafting camping trip. Its cross-referentiality makes it especially funny and charming to horror nerds like me (as well, I'm sure, as the audience I saw it with). All in all, a great four films that rivals Three Extremes in quality.

Thai 4 horror short stories...all parts had fine acting and fine production values. The first one about texting on the cellphone, while somewhat predicatable, was bone chilling--- a simple story very well told and the best of the bunch. The second one about a bullied student was...( read more) more gore and horror than chills, and turned into a splatterfest. The third one about the four boys camping and rafting was more comedic than scary, and also had a predictable ending. The fourth and final episode was slow to develop and more psychological driven. While original in nature with a few sudden jolts, its ending was hokey. I'd rate the first installment a solid 4 stars, but the three stories after only 2 stars.

Awesome! A great anthology film with some great scares and big laughs. All the directors do an amazing job with the the stylish stories. Of course, anyone who's seen it is going to leave remembering "In Between" the most, frankly it is the best with some incredible comic perfo...( read more)rmances, but every story shines, proving Asian horror is far from dead. It just has to be done right, and every segment is a textbook example of how to accomplish that. Should become something of a classic if there is any justice.
