    I love the soundtrack.

A rom-com for people who don't like rom-coms. The leads attracted me to this and cope ably. Deschanel's character was really annoying me with her oh-so quirky behaviours emphasising her individuality (clearly dreamt up by a man) but snatches this from the jaws of defeat with a st...( read more)andout scene which packs a hefty emotional punch and puts us and Levitt out of our misery.

Did you ever just get out of a relationship and wonder what the hell went wrong? Everything seemed fine. 500 Days of Summer recounts the 500 days that Tom (Joespeh Gordon-Levitt) is obsessed with Summer (Zoey Deschanel). From the first meeting, through the good times of pretendin...( read more)g Bed, Bath, and Beyond is their home, into the bad times, and finally ending in meltdown, it's all there as a documentary/ highlight reel, skipping back and forth throughout the relationship, counting down the days like an efficiency love expert.

The opening of the film states flat out that this is not a love story and it isn't at all. It's more of an examination of a personality (Tom) and how he sees his relationship with Summer. You see it from his eyes and not until the final few minutes does the audience experience that moment of clarity with Tom- this has a long time coming, sir. The film serves as an examination of the modern relationship from the earliest days of finding out that the two of you like the same band to the dreaded engagement ring.

Director Marc Weber bounces back and forth not as a gimmick, ripping off Tarantino or the hundreds of directors that followed him. Weber's splices and dices coincide with each other so that you get a film that isn't choppy, but flows from one section of their love to the next. Each skip complements the other. 500 Days of Summer is a wonderfully shot and acted film that goes beyond the popcorn crunching norm of boys and girls hating each other until realizing "Hey, you're OK". It's almost in reverse.

    (500) Days of Summer is very unconventional, but in this case, unconventional is a welcome change. The whole relationship genre seems to suffer from being too dour (Two Lovers), too formulaic (a bazillion movies starring Katherine Heigl and her kind), or simply too saccharine for...( read more) anyone with a Y-chromosome. Just for avoiding those pits, (500) Days of Summer deserves some kind of special award at the Oscars.

Zooey Deschanel is great, of course. This role is similar to those she's had in movies and shows like Gigantic and Weeds, but that's just because she's so believable as this kind of character. Joseph isn't really stretching outside his comfort range, either, but once you've seen this, you won't be able to imagine anyone else in his place.

The movie itself is a mixture of unnervingly genuine moments and fanciful flourishes.
The narrator (don't you love narrators in movies?) tells you what you're in for within the first five minutes of the movie, and you'd be wise to believe him. It's not that you're not going to get a happy ending, it's just that this movie is similar to life; the happy ending you get may not be the one you were looking for.

A realistic (funny, tragic, honest) look at relationships. It stars two of my favorite "indy" actors, Jospeh Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel who are always a delight to watch and deliver here performances that are quirky, charming and painfully believable.

My second favori...( read more)te "star" of this film (after the two lead actors) is (my home town) Los Angeles. Shown here in rare form and reminding me (and the rest of the world) of all the beauty that can be found here. Which for once is shown to be more then just palm trees, fancy cars and "beautiful" people.

And almost as enjoyable is the eclectic soundtrack featuring: The Smiths, Carla Bruni, Regina Spektor, Feist, Hall & Oates and Simon And Garfunkel (to name a few).

The only problem that I had (SPOLIER ALERT) is the fact that after (500 days) of alternating between leading Tom on, putting him off and declaring that she doesn't want/need to be with anyone...Summer can both find and marry her "soul mate" in a matter of just a few weeks.

While I can see a writer wanting this to be a sign of her "quirkiness" and possibly the fact that she might be a littIe unstable (an ultimately not a great match for Tom)...I feel like it would have been just as effective (and would have allowed her character to remain both quirky AND likable) if she would have just gotten engaged to the other guy.

But other then that, I enjoyed the story and the clever way that it was told.

definately the best (non) love story i've seen and one of the best films of 2009.

    this movie was very corny

I was hoping this would be better after seeing the critical praise, maybe expectations were too high, I just didn't enjoy this a lot, it was ok and the two leads saved it from being a total disaster

Marcy Dermansky, About.com

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel light up the screen in Marc Webb's directorial debut (500) Days of Summer. That might sound corny, but they do. full review

Everything that's wrong, on the surface, with (500) Days of Summer pales in light of everything that's going on beneath its surface. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

Much like Annie Hall did for a previous generation, (500) Days of Summer may be the movie that best captures a contemporary romantic sensibility. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

A fresh July breeze among recent (and mostly stale) romantic-comedy offerings. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The ending is tidy and way too cute, but (500) Days is otherwise a different kind of love story: an honest one that takes a piece out of you. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

In romance, we believe what we want to believe. That's the reason 500 Days of Summer is so appealing. full review

Armond White, The New York Press

It is so annoyingly cute about the smartness of middle-class young white people in love that one quickly realizes it is only about that -- not love nor passion as everyone experiences it. full review

David Edelstein, New York Magazine

There's no real drama when the inner life of the female lead is so shrouded, even if that's the point. full review
