A realistic (funny, tragic, honest) look at relationships. It stars two of my favorite "indy" actors, Jospeh Grodon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel who are always a delight to watch and deliver here performances that are quirky, charming and painfully believable.

Perhaps a close ...( read more)second (after the two actors) favorite "star" of this film is (my home town) Los Angeles. Shown here in rare form and reminding me (and the rest of the world) of all the beauty that can be found here. Which for once is shown to be more then just palm trees and "beautiful" people.

And almost as enjoyable is the eclectic soundtrack featuring: The Smiths, Carla Bruni, Regina Spektor, Feist, Hall & Oates and Simon And Garfunkel (to name a few).

The only problem that I had (SPOLIER ALERT) is the fact that after (500 days) of alternating between leading Tom on, putting him off and declaring that she doesn't want/need to be with anyone...Summer can both find and marry her "soul mate" in a matter of just a few weeks.

While I can see a writer wanting this to be a sign of her "quirkiness" and possibly the fact that she might be a littIe unstable (an ultimately not a great match for Tom)...I feel like it would have been just as effective (and would have allowed her character to remain both quirky AND likable) if she would have just gotten engaged to the other guy.

But other then that, I enjoyed the story and the clever way that it was told.

i don't like rom-coms as a rule so i may be prejudiced. i am a fan of the two leads so i gave it a chance. and it's not terrible by any means. i'm sure it's better than 95% of rom-coms out there. it's just trying much too hard to be annie hall. i still mighta gone 3 1/2 but ...( read more)for that ending...*gag*

When an indie film receives as much hype as this one had one gets set to be a bit disappointed. In this case, one would be wrong.
Swimmingly excellent in every aspect this film was just a delight to watch.
We are told from the word "go" how this film will end and usually that ...( read more)is a pitfall, but in this case it leaves us wondering where the trail will lead as we weave in an utterly un-chronological fashion through our lead's recall of the relationship.
Isn't that how it really goes though? Never from 1 to 100 (or in this case 500), but snippets that get us from here to there. We remember the most recent and then perhaps insight into the middle and back to the start an then somewhere else in between. Some people might find this vehicle trite, but I feel it was very well done.
In fact, many vehicles are drawn upon to make this marvelous story work. Time, black and white, musical numbers and dance. We even get a little Fellini on you, but they all work. They are a perfect depiction of how perception takes hold and love holds sway to tell the story rather than having us believe the reality which is what our lead must eventually come unto if he is to walk away in one piece...maybe even wiser (if not too jaded) than he was before.
Fantastic performances by Joseph Gordon Levitt (Tom) and Zooey Deschanel (Summer) both of whom never disappoint. Levitt came into his own in my opinion in "The Lookout" and "Brick" and continues his great performances in great films here. Deschanel, ever the stunning, velvet-eyed Goddess, is perfect in her part as the independent, smart, beautiful woman that we all want, but, as she tells us from the start...we cannot have. That is just the way she feels and she never professes otherwise. She is not the product of some bad mix of emotional baggage she simply is as she is with no apologies.
Watch this as soon as you can and go with it...it will take you places you have been before if you are honest with yourself. Summer was.

It's a fresh take on the typical boy-meets-girl story; the story is unpredictable and smart, the characters feel real, and it has undeniable style- both in direction and score. It's also cool having a protagonist with my name for a change.

It's a good realistic look at relationships. more of these types of movies would be good for us as a society, i think, so people stop acting like Joseph Gordon-Levitt did in the beginning of this movie.

The hype on this movie was that it breaks all the conventions. Well, I would say it tweeks the conventions, maybe bends them a little so they look a little different but it's still conventional. Not to say that's a bad thing. Just don't expect Eternal Sunshine or Punch Drunk Love...( read more). This is more like an 80's Cusack film or Garden State. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments but the movie was generally subtle in everything it did. The lack of a higher rating comes from a lack of connection with the characters. It was either the subtlety or the messing around with the timeline gimmick that made me lack any sense of rooting for this couple.

In a tangled web full of love stories, "(500) Days of Summer" not just shines - it stands out. For one, it doesn't revolve around the conventional "happy ending" scenario, instead it brings out the realistic side of romance - the sad part - which is often concealed, if not comple...( read more)tely eradicated, in today's love stories.

The plot is presented in a nonlinear narrative - another added asset. It does not go with the common flow of unfolding happenings and events. It jumps from one scene to another when - and where - you least expect it.

Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) give justice to his role. From his actions to his expressions, he made it clear that he's Tom - a hopeless romantic. Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is also exceptional. While watching the film, I cannot ignore the her clear resemblance to Katy Perry (who's my favorite pop icon, by the way) in terms of physical appearance. She brings the best out of Tom, a powerful synergy. She is undeniably an indispensable part of the movie. Tom's sister (Chloe Moretz) is great and charming, too.

Of course, all the movie itself won't become a reality without Marc Webb, the film director. For a first timer, he made a good job. I'm looking forward to see more of his movies in the future.

Go watch it. I tell you - it's worth it. I just love (un)happy endings - just to go with the title.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (BRICK) stars as Tom, a greeting-card writer who dreams of becoming an architect and finding his true love. Zooey Deschanel (THE HAPPENING) plays Summer, a vintage-looking beauty whose ideas about love are entirely modern. As Tom remembers his 500 days with Summer, his mind jumps from moment to moment, largely thinking of the good times in their trouble-filled relationship. Indie darlings Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are perfectly cast in this sweet, funny film that infuses the typical romantic tropes with reality. Anyone else would have caused audiences to hate Summer, but Deschanel is adorable enough that she still endears herself to viewers. Arthouse favorite Gordon-Levitt hasn?t played a traditional romantic lead since 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU in 1999, but here he proves equally adept at portraying Tom?s sweetness and his neuroses. Music-video director Marc Webb makes his feature debut with (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and it?s easy to see influences of his past work. The soundtrack boasts songs from Regina Spektor, Doves, Feist, Wolfmother, and, of course, The Smiths, the band that brings the couple together. Webb also adds an innovative style to the dramedy, combining a naturalistic look at love with a non-linear plot, animated vignettes, and a triumphant musical sequence. The film?s mixture of cynicism and romance makes it perfect viewing for happy couples, the recently dumped, and the hopeful singles in the audience.

This movie was so slow and boring and weird. Parts of it were interesting and I like the actors they chose but the story just dragged on forever and didn't go anywhere.
