When an indie film receives as much hype as this one had one gets set to be a bit disappointed. In this case, one would be wrong.
Swimmingly excellent in every aspect this film was just a delight to watch.
We are told from the word "go" how this film will end and usually that ...( read more)is a pitfall, but in this case it leaves us wondering where the trail will lead as we weave in an utterly un-chronological fashion through our lead's recall of the relationship.
Isn't that how it really goes though? Never from 1 to 100 (or in this case 500), but snippets that get us from here to there. We remember the most recent and then perhaps insight into the middle and back to the start an then somewhere else in between. Some people might find this vehicle trite, but I feel it was very well done.
In fact, many vehicles are drawn upon to make this marvelous story work. Time, black and white, musical numbers and dance. We even get a little Fellini on you, but they all work. They are a perfect depiction of how perception takes hold and love holds sway to tell the story rather than having us believe the reality which is what our lead must eventually come unto if he is to walk away in one piece...maybe even wiser (if not too jaded) than he was before.
Fantastic performances by Joseph Gordon Levitt (Tom) and Zooey Deschanel (Summer) both of whom never disappoint. Levitt came into his own in my opinion in "The Lookout" and "Brick" and continues his great performances in great films here. Deschanel, ever the stunning, velvet-eyed Goddess, is perfect in her part as the independent, smart, beautiful woman that we all want, but, as she tells us from the start...we cannot have. That is just the way she feels and she never professes otherwise. She is not the product of some bad mix of emotional baggage she simply is as she is with no apologies.
Watch this as soon as you can and go with it...it will take you places you have been before if you are honest with yourself. Summer was.

It's a fresh take on the typical boy-meets-girl story; the story is unpredictable and smart, the characters feel real, and it has undeniable style- both in direction and score. It's also cool having a protagonist with my name for a change.

Smart, vibrant and human - (500) Days of Summer is an honest yet fantastical look at the interconnectivity between people and the encounters that pit us together. The film is life, relationships and reality in the space of a nutshell, at once a push towards the harsh truths of th...( read more)e world, but with a reminder of the faint hope that whispers unexpectedly to wash it away. While it's tones of indie fandom may lean towards a new-age cliche' of sorts, the film proves something of a ray of light from the beginning as it's narrator smashes any sense of this - this film is not a love story. It is a look at relationships, which hold so much more. It is a look at the chemistry that binds us, the chances in life, and the random acts in the possible notion of fate. At it's core - the film is about growth, and the relationships we hold before "the one".

This movie is just extraordinarily tremendous. No sappy storytelling, no happy endings, no unusual situations, no unbelievable individuals. It's so real and so de facto, I would have no problem believing in it. A tale of unrequited love, of hearts breaking and mending and all ove...( read more)r again, of desire, of time and of coincidences. Breathing of all that makes our lives worthy.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an actor who needs no introductions - he is splendid in whatever he does, may it be Tom Hansen, a romantic fool who believes in Fate and everlasting love, to Neil, a gay hustler, to Paul Ryder, an up-tight Mormon, to just about everything. Zooey Deschanel may be gorgeous and sweet, but her acting seems to be flat wherever she stars. She's just lacking the "wow" factor for me. Marc Webb's direction showed me that he's capable enough to do everything, not just video-clips for MTV. As for the soundtrack, it's one I always wish films had.

Maybe it leaves you with a bittersweet taste, but for once, here is a real story instead of all the happily-ever-after crap. It reminded me a bit of another film I watched recently, Gigantic, which might have been one of the reasons I didn't rate it even higher. See it, enjoy it, get invested.

Pretty good try. Nice. I have an advice to M.W. Pls make 300 with Fall , 200 with Winter and just 50 is enough for Spring. Calculation is nice way of love, but not abstract. Frankly film is too dull for me. Sorry , I could not catch romance. Where was it ?

Some would say "[500] Days of Summer" is nothing but a light romantic comedy, and some would put it in their top 5 or 10 of 2009. I have to agree and join the latter. I'm never a fan of this kind of films (In my opinion, most films in this genre just exposes the cuteness of the a...( read more)ctors/actresses), but this film brought a distinct visual style and honest emotions to completely separate it from the rest. It is about love at first sight, love lost, new found love, and new found love lost. All of this were Tom's inner struggles, and in a period of 500 days, a woman has let him experience all of these. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel gave exceptional performances, again, a rarity in romantic comedies. There are much to say about "[500] Days of Summer", but to sum it all up, it is a kind of a film that is pleasing to the eyes and at the same time, subtly teaches the heart of the viewer the complicated art of love.
