Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory. In an unprecedented undertaking, acclaimed director Oliver ...( read more

Not to be misunderestimated, Oliver Stone's latest is much more sympathetic and engaging than the slanderous parody one might expect. Josh Brolin's impeccable performance goes beyond mere comic impression to find the heart of the character, to show that the movie intends to be a character study more than a political jab. He carries the movie with one of the year's best performances. Sometimes hilarious, occasionally chilling, and always interesting, the film is a surprisingly well-constructed portrait of one of America's most complex and fascinating presidencies.
I am counting down the days until january 20th, why in the hell would i want to see a recap of the ineptitude of this president?
Although the movie may have a great cast that acts exteremely well, W. is not quite all that great. It can't manage to interest me all the way through the 130 minutes of it.
I get a sense Oliver Stone is trying to get a monopoly on history before any one else has a chance to come along and direct it. Both this film and "World Trade Center" suck all relevant political information from the screen and re-place them with stories, that could be about anyone, or anywhere. "World Trade Center" cus it doesnt try to tackle or even touch the politcal nature of the event, becomes a movie which could be about ANY disaster, where people came together after a tragedy. Likewise "W' could be a film about any president, if you read their wikkipedia page, got an actor who kinda sounded like them, and a bunch of supporting characters who may bave seen the characters they were supposed to be playing.
Of course Bush is a "real human bieng" were we expecting a robot, or space-man, or private detective. Do we really need to see imagined pespectives of his life, in order to confirm, in fact, he IS a real person just like us. I don't think Batman is better off because we see him crying alone at night calling for his mommy, or because we can see the sweatstains in Super-Man's armpits, and getting to see GW drunk trying to fight his dad after he got in to Yale, is just more of this psuedo-realism masquerading as the call to 3-dimensional humanism.
Movies arent deeper or more realistic, because you can relate to the character, just as someone is Not more suited for the presidency because you want to share a beer with them. This was the equivalent of the movie you want to share a beer with.
I you want to cover a historical character, wait til there's some actual historical perspective. Otherwise you wind up, trying to include every mis-quote sound bite Bush ever uttered, into an out of context situation, like a beloved television character, who needs a script re-written to have more chances to spout their catch phrase. Continously Bush says things, we all heard him say in speeches or public adresses in private, like "misunderstimated" is just common Bush-speak, and not a public speaking fuck-up.
I enjoyed parts of this movie, but over-all, I failed to see any point to this. Like "Alexander" it fails to capture history, because it avoids history and tries to capture "the man" who can't really exist for us, without a proper historical context. That's why one of the greatest conqueres of the ancient world, came of like a sexually confused, hot-head, who won a few battles by accident, dragged his army all of the world, and died a failure. And all of that is true-ish, but unless the audience can understand why, for ex; the greek language throughout this region lead to the spread of christinaity, and laid the groundwork for Rome, etc. Well then there is no point for the audience to watch your history free, historical drama.
Likewise one of the great modern world leaders, also has no context, and is rendered an emperor with no clothes. W. ends up a movie of a naked caricature, who just wants to please his daddy, and then his "higher daddy", and then well it just ends...poor Bush, poor us. Bad Oliver Stone.
Also Collen Powell does not sound like Scruff Mcgruff the crime Dog, and Condeliza Rice is not stuck on permanent bobble head. And if the Simpsons can find an voice actor who sounds like GW the 1st, why could this movie only find James Cromwell, who doesnt even attempt a Conneticut accent, but a few shoddy performances are the least of this movies troubles.
He has already screwed up our country now they have to make a movie about what we as a country just lived through is the movie industry bored????
I agree with a lot of people that some very important things were glossed over, but that doesn't mean what's there isn't worthy. The performances are excellent, production values are in check, and, it's surprisingly even handed in it's portrayal of "Dubya".
Many filmmakers simply present one version of Bush, which is a war-mongering and oil-hungry idiot, this film doesn't follow that stereotype, portraying him as an actual human being, not the soul-less devil that a lot of people make him out to be.
It's fantastic to finally see a filmmaker that isn't a republican portray Bush sympathetically.
While much of this movie is purely speculative, 95% of the cast, particularly Josh Brolin in the title role, does a very good job of humanizing its characters, the exception being Thandie Newton, whose Condoleezza Rice is more caricature than character.
josh brolin is superb as george bush, in apearence and voice, and while oliver stone hasent gone out to make a film to destroy the man, hes made him out to be both lovable, and a bit stupid, but full of conviction for what he wants to do, some moments here come off very spinal tap, if you watch it right, and others, especially anything concerning them talking about situation in irak, and plans are handled very well, and frightening, we have a look at his early life in texas, and his relationship with his father, also former preseident, and his disapointment in his son, bush comes out at times a lovable fool, if thats possible, and shows at the end of it all, put a guy in a job, he becomes that job, some great speeches also fom bush in this, using well, his famous bad use of phrases, theres also great support from james cromwell, richard dreyfuss, and sprcial mention to jeffrey wright as his advisers, oliver stone has said he didnt want to make a film to destroy him, but in a way, hes poking fun here, but thats not to bad
A truly fascinating film about our favourite Texan Governer.
I have to hand it to Stone, moving against expectation, this is a nicely balanced and oddly compassionate film.
One thing is for certain and that is, Josh Brolin is a dude.... His work here is flawless. He has captured W. and his mannerism's perfectly. The rest of the cast are good value too, with props to Thandie.... Not liked her much before but she is v good as Rice.
A definite return to form for Stone. I guess it helps when your subject is as comprlling as this.
awful - shallow plot - as Bush hater - was looking for more meat in script. So W has Daddy issues, gets spirituality from near cult character - just doesn't float this boat
OK, for those of you eho know me, you know know I'm really potically aware and into politics. So of course I wanted to see this.
I was actually happy with how realisitc it seemed. Stone managed to be funny without being too harsh (not that I think Bush deserves that) but he also managed to "gp there."
Bits of the dialog were hilarious to me, and Brolin did an excellent job getting the voice and mannerisms down.
Not for everyone, but I really liked it.
Eh, I think you could've waited a bit longer on this one, Oliver. Distracting impersonations (Condi Rice isn't *that* weird) and superficial skimming of most significant events. I expect this history will be better revisited.
Hitler wanted to be a painter, he ended up being the most hated man that have ever lived. Bush wanted to be a baseball player, he ended up being the most hated man this decade and possibly the most hated president of all time. Funny how things could change in an individual's life. How do men like them go from such innocent dream to an extreme one?
This movie was all i wanted and more. When we heard Stone was directing we immediately though this will be another hate campaign against the soon to be ex president but Stone did a superb job in showing us a different side of maybe a misunderstood man. We all are misunderstood sometimes and the path we take could be anything. It just shows how things are never certain in life.
When Bush's dad started the gulf war, Bush Jr. ended it. In the movie it seems like we are being told that all Dubya wanted was his dad's approval that he never received unlike his brother. Bush became the president and beat his dad's record by staying 4 more years and getting rid of Saddam from this life. Whether this was a personal war or just a conspiracy we will never know in this life time but it's an interesting prospect or theory to the last 8 years of his presidency.
The movie has heart and I left feeling good afterwards because I realized that it is never impossible to achieve what you want. Bush is not or never was the sharpest tool in the box but he changed his life around to becoming the most powerful man. Surely that is inspirational enough to anyone who dreams.
The performance was one of the best I have seen this year. I really feel like Brolin deserves an Oscar nominee for what he did. The performances in general by all Bush's staff were fantastic. Dick Chaney was spot on, even the looks. At some points it felt like i was watching the news because he looked so much like him.
I am baffled by the negative feedbacks and low ratings but if you enjoy movies, acting, politics and Oliver Stone than this is really one of the best movies this year.
I've already been living this movie for the past eight years. I'll watch it one day in the future if for some reason I need to be reminded of this.
it came at a right time -the guy [bush ] is depicted as a person who just was surrounded by a lot of dead beats!
We need to run Stone, and his Dumbocrap friends, out on a rail. A few moments at the end, where Brolin sort of resembled W were fun, but too little to save this piece of shit.
Brolin puts in a mind blowing performance, nailing the voice and mannerisms of Bush. In fact, most of the actors do a great job. Sadly, the structure of the film is weak, supporting characters are not given the 3D sympathetic angle and it feels rushed and unfinished. Well worth checking out though.
A sub-par script saved by incredible performances makes it a watchable biopic. You must see it to really make your own judgment
This movie was entirely worthless on all levels! Comedy = 0, Drama = 0, Informative = 0, Historical accuracy = 0, Entertaining = 0. I don't have a clue what Stone was thinking. Don't waste your money or time!
In my opinion, Oliver Stone had lost his talent of directing after seeing Alexander, one of the most pointless epics I ever laid my eyes on. World Trade Centre was better, but it lacked a certain powerful feeling to it the subject it was based upon, really needed. And now, Stone is tackling the history of one of the most hated men in history, George W. Bush, but only to help us understand him. I was excited for this one, Bush seems like a shallow/interesting character in reality if that makes any sense, and would've been interesting to see his life in whatever way Stone took on the project, comedic or serious, it was something a bunch of people were hoping would be done right, for the sake of the people who have apparently suffered under his leadership. I'm not an American, so I wouldn't know what this terror has done to the country, but from what I can tell and after watching this film, is that if you were in hot-seat, would you be any better?
Dubya takes a look at the life of Bush, and what a fascinating life that has been. He may appear stupid in reality, and in some ways, that's true, but in other ways, Bush is slightly bright, after all, how would he have made it into office after all. The great thing about W. is that it doesn't try to change your mind on Bush, it only enlightens it and doesn't go overboard with the details in the process. It's a very evened out story with a lot of humor, drama, and it never dries up. I gotta give it up for Oliver Stone for really getting it right, from what we can tell. And at least Bush is interesting, as are the people around him. And you know that crazy war going on right now, this film sheds some light on that topic. A lot is covered and it really never gets old.
The highlight of W. is definately the performances that shine as bright as Bush's ego. Josh Brolin is perfect, I mean PERFECT as Bush. You can tell he researched for his role highly, or just watched a bunch of Youtube videos, whatever the case, he's done his work and he's done it well. An Oscar-worthy performance, prehaps, only time will tell on what's coming later this year. Brolin is also what keeps the film going and holding our interest throughout. And he's flippin hillarious, in a realistic way. The supporting cast is also fantastic, particularly Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush and James Cromwell as George Sr. The cast is well selected and each part fits so perfectly, sometimes it's scary. But it all helps with the history that's unfolding before your eyes.
Thanks to superb performances and top notch story-telling, W. is a fantasticly done show that ends up being slightly short of a masterpiece. There's no particular negativity to it, it just doesn't feel perfect, or close to perfect. But it's a wonderful film non the less and also raises the question. If you were in Bush's shoes, would you be any better? Bush surely ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, but heck, not everyone's a genious. Bush is mainly a man who wanted to do some good and carry on the family legacy, but the weight of the world squashed. He's pretty much like us, he's just got the fancy office and of course the rule of country, but otherwise, as many are saying after seeing this movie, we are Bush, and that just flat out sucks!
It's funny that this movie might not appeal to most Bush detractors, and of course Bush supporters will just steer clear... it's a polarizing film, just like Dubya himself. Oliver Stone fans may be disappointed yet again since the guy avoids the inclusion of conspiracies; World Trade Center played it safe, why not W.? Besides, we already had Fahrenheit 9/11 four years ago, and I think one anti-Bush movie was good enough. But unlike Moore's propagandist "documentary," I think Oliver Stone's W. could very well stand the test of time.
Will type s'more laters... :p
I liked it alot. Very intersting and the film makers really didn't put any partison spin into anything.
Very Interesting movie here,You should definitely check this out.Josh Brolin does a really good job right down to that annoying ass laugh.See it!
If I knew nothing about film and watched this movie I would never had thought that Oliver Stone directed this. This is a movie that is driven by its performances. These performances are what bring out that Surreal Stone presence we are use to. His usual camera work and editing is no where to be seen in this film. This is Stone doing straight narrative.
The Wars, Ecomony, and Oliver Stone making two PG-13 movies in a row is the real sign things are not right in this country. I want the Stone of the late 80's and early 90's. I want R rated Stone. I want gay Bacon, and wacked out Downey Jr. covered in blood. I know Any Given Sunday is not a good movie, but its Fucking Stone. After you watched it still had that stone stamp on it. I watch that every time it comes on to just laugh at how absurd it all is. Cause that is what he use to be so good at just making you think what the hell just happened. He needs to get back to that or start doing drugs.
I will say though Josh Brolin is awesome in this film, he really brings out the man and all the emotions with it. Jeffery Wright and Thandie Newton also gave really great performances. Dreyfuss is a evil bastard as Chenney, but I wasn't blown away because this is the character he has been typed cast as in his later stage of life.
I really believe that if the American electorate doesn't wake-up and start supporting intelligent responsible leaders soon none of us will be rating any movies. The frightening thing about this cartoonish portrayal of the 43 president is that its' not far from the actual TRUTH!!!! Do you Sarah Palin supporters get it????
This has to be really stupid on so many parts, also it should get a bad rating it's first week because the government would think it to be wrong or however you say it. The government made at first a big deal out of a few war games that came out this yr one of which was Metal Gear Solid 4, because even tho it wasn't MENT to it sounded a hell of alot like the war now in Iraq and such. When you make a movie or game it's more acceptable after either a war that the movie or game is based on has ended or a Bio of a president once that president is out of office yeah I know Bush with soon get out since his 8 yrs are up but still I think this move should get a bad rating it's first week or two... me honestly would give it a 0/5 so I'm not at all interested besides it'll do lies anyways that's all the USA Government does any more is lie through there teath...
