An alright movie with not a lot of things happening until the end... They should have divided the action a bit. Not the best acting from Cage's part but Phoenix was great.

The most ufoal film I have ever seen! Too much violence! I really hope this doesn't happen in reality! The film was thrilling some how just because you yourself want to know what happend.

One of those movies that leaves horrible memories behind and provides new vocabulary at the same time.

Great acting from NC again but i dont think showing some of the 'videos' was necessary. Story was good but that seemed a bit pointless, i think we get what it was!

Cool movie. The premise for the story was great and the movie was very visually engaging. Applause goes to Joaquin Phoenix for his great performance in this movie.

This is a very difficult movie to watch. It is also one of Nic Cage's best in my opinion. A judge dies. His widow finds a 8mm film in his things. She watches and is shocked to see it is not just a porno, but a snuff film. She hires Nic Cage to find out if the girl in the film is really killed. Cage's character enters a world he finds changes him. It has strong issues and may upset many viewers. Not a light film. James Gandolfini and Joaquin Phoenix give strong performances as well.

I am not a Nicolas Cage fan by any means. That being said, this was an excellent film that takes Cage from being a sort-of pushover at the start of the film to an almost sadistic madman at the end trying to get to the bottom of a snuff film that has been proven to be real. Typical excellent performances by Phoenix, Stormare and Gandolfini highlight this lengthy (it seems longer than two hours) film about taboo pornography. Schumacher adds one of the best DVD commentaries I've heard as well.

I found this film very disturbing !! . The thought of someone killing a person, filming it and then selling it to sick individuals is horrific.

In my opinion, one of the best movies to portrait this reality. What should remained as a "normal" investigation based upon an 8 mm tape where a girl is killed, becomes a downward journey into a world of things that should not be seen by common eyes. Tom Welles's duality between cold investigation focusing and emotional fascination for the extreme hidden world unfolded, guides him into a lot more than he could handle. As the story goes, the bridge which separates Tom from those who practiced the deeds of death becomes uncomfortably short. That inner conflict of uncomfort is brilliantly shown throughout the movie due to a very good incarnation of his role by Nicolas Cage. Another brilliant incarnation goes to "The Machine"...no words, just see him and you will know. After all, evil things can be done by those who resemble "normality". A fist in society's face. This movie is raw, complex and moral shredding. The answer to the question "Why?" stands high above all in its absolute simplicity and whereas the "snuff reality" is true or an urban myth...well, one thing is a fact, if it is indeed true and if some old 8mm tapes circle around through shadowed hands, you will never know.

Revolving around whether or not a snuff film is real or fake. This is the only movie I ever wanted to leave the theater before it was finished. There was nothing redeemable.

Definitely not for everyone, that's for sure, but I still think it's one of Schumacher's best effort(with A Time to Kill, Flatliners and Falling Down,of course).Dark, provocative, shocking, but quite exhilarating, and dramatically effective.Cage actually does a pretty good job with his character, who's believable and sympathetic. And he's greatly supported by such great actors as Catherine Keener,Joaquin Phoenix,James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare, the last two of them playing hateful yet very realistic "bad guys".Another thing I appreciate about this film is that it's not all "Hollywood".No big happy ending here...So,while it's not exactly a film you watch to feel better afterwards,it's worth seeing for those who have the stomach for it.

Condemning violent pornography through violent killography? At least the contradiction is addressed through the evolution of Cage's character, even if I don't like him much as an actor. As a psychological thriller it succeeds, as even when the momentum slows the atmosphere is still adequately disturbing. That's pretty easy to accomplish with the subject matter, though. Points to Joaquin and Gandolfini. It accomplishes what it sets out to.

First half is a tense and shocking detective story, but at the half way point it does a complete 180 and becomes an average revenge flick with some saving graces. It has a very strong story and is pretty well directed. Not too bad, but not great.

Though its synopsis about the underworld of scum may be a bit dawned upon, it is truly a scary movie that intrigues the mind about concept: humans.
