Visually spellbinding film from acclaimed director Tim Burton and the up and coming Timur Bekmambetov (who brought us the Night Watch films and the 2008 hit Wanted) about a ragdoll named 9 who wakes up in a post apocalyptic world where humans are extinct. 9 teams w...( read more)ith a group of similar creations to eliminate the evil machines that have taken over the world.

Almost groundbreaking in looks and style, 9 still fails to deliver anything valuable. The story is too thematic for children, but lacks substance for adults. The plot isn't horrible, but it's nothing engaging either. I've grown to expect more from people like Burton and Timur. Burton's signature flare is present, but the story was just too boring to enjoy.

WARNING: Obscure references and bad analogies ahead!

Do you know the band "Tool"? If so, have you seen their music video for the song "Sober"? This film is an elongated, Disney-ized, burlap version of that video, I swear!

The visuals are fan-freakin-tastic but, unfortunate...( read more)ly, the story is a little too convoluted. I realize that Acker didn't want this project to turn into just another frivolous cartoon, but a little comic relief now and then would have been nice. Its as though he tried sooooo hard to make 9 sophisticated that he sometimes forgot to make it entertaining.

Interesting take on the dark apocalyptic future world genre.

The movie is excellent. Well done. Great voice talents and amazing attention to detail by Shane Acker.

Never before has a movie been so respectful with its audience, never looking down on them or thinking they are less than morons. This is one gutsy, s.o.b. film: with the full knowledge of the tons of kids and money in merchandise (toys and games) they were going to lose, they sti...( read more)ll managed to pull this off - a movie with no concessions and no sugary fairy dust, just pure post-apocalyptic action, gruesome visuals and extraordinary imagination beyond all expectations.

I'm glad and at the same time disappointed by the respect they had for the original short film. Yes, they respected the original plot and expanded it in clever ways but, c'mon! It felt so freakin' brief. The good thing? It doesn't matter. The screenplay is so round, so tiny, so perfectly written, it takes you to a roller coaster ride and never lets go, til the end. The characters are lovable and real (they are, after all, all that's left of the human soul/spirit) and the action sequences are so goddamn well directed and crafted.

Shane Acker is a truly genius on his way to the top. Just wait. You'll see.

I loved how the small mature details like corpses and drug-use (the magnet, anyone?) reminded us that we were not watching just an animated film, but a full time tiny masterpiece, beyond filming techniques.

The Over the rainbow scene is probably one of the top scenes of the year. Maybe even the decade. It is out-of-this-world fantastic.

Good animation movie, story was original, and the animation was really cool, all in all a good animation movie :)

Completely forgettable, this is a movie that doesn't know what the target audience is.

Beautiful to look at and Crispin Glover plays the creepy sneaking pajama-wearing mutters-to-self-cryptic-phrases-while-drawing-nonsense character so I was pretty pleased. The film kind of loses steam around the final act, though.

While 9 was nowhere near a total disappointment, the anemic script and surprisingly weak vocal performances from the otherwise talented cast were overshadowed by creative, dark and dense imagery that helped to propel the film. Any fan of animation should definitely give this a v...( read more)iew or two, just don't expect Pixar level quality entertainment.
