WARNING: Obscure references and bad analogies ahead!

Do you know the band "Tool"? If so, have you seen their music video for the song "Sober"? This film is an elongated, Disney-ized, burlap version of that video, I swear!

The visuals are fan-freakin-tastic but, unfortunate...( read more)ly, the story is a little too convoluted. I realize that Acker didn't want this project to turn into just another frivolous cartoon, but a little comic relief now and then would have been nice. Its as though he tried sooooo hard to make 9 sophisticated that he sometimes forgot to make it entertaining.

Interesting take on the dark apocalyptic future world genre.

The movie is excellent. Well done. Great voice talents and amazing attention to detail by Shane Acker.

Never before has a movie been so respectful with its audience, never looking down on them or thinking they are less than morons. This is one gutsy, s.o.b. film: with the full knowledge of the tons of kids and money in merchandise (toys and games) they were going to lose, they sti...( read more)ll managed to pull this off - a movie with no concessions and no sugary fairy dust, just pure post-apocalyptic action, gruesome visuals and extraordinary imagination beyond all expectations.

I'm glad and at the same time disappointed by the respect they had for the original short film. Yes, they respected the original plot and expanded it in clever ways but, c'mon! It felt so freakin' brief. The good thing? It doesn't matter. The screenplay is so round, so tiny, so perfectly written, it takes you to a roller coaster ride and never lets go, til the end. The characters are lovable and real (they are, after all, all that's left of the human soul/spirit) and the action sequences are so goddamn well directed and crafted.

Shane Acker is a truly genius on his way to the top. Just wait. You'll see.

I loved how the small mature details like corpses and drug-use (the magnet, anyone?) reminded us that we were not watching just an animated film, but a full time tiny masterpiece, beyond filming techniques.

The Over the rainbow scene is probably one of the top scenes of the year. Maybe even the decade. It is out-of-this-world fantastic.

Solid movie, slightly disappointing but solid. I saw part of the original short and this movie looks exactly like that. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends from person to person. Personally I thought the animation would be better than it ended up being. I thought it ...( read more)just lacked color. I know it's a post-apocalyptic world but everything just looked too dark, it's like whoever did the animation wasn't very good with colors that weren't dark. Also, the story is an absolute mess in this movie. Just a mess. Something about a Albert Einstein-like scientist and a Hitler-like tyrant. It's all very allegorical and slightly stupid. Also the movie has no real story until an hour into the movie where the scientist reveals that the little sack people have a piece of the scientist's soul in them. That idea is great, but when that happens there's like 10-15 minutes left in the movie and you have no time to think about it. If they had done that at the beginning it would have been much better, in my opinion, than just telling us 10-15 minutes before the movie ends, that was just a stupid decision. Also if every one of the sack people had a piece of the scientist's soul then why was the big grunt so dumb. Wouldn't he be smart as well? It just makes no sense. It just seems like a wasted opportunity, because if done at the beginning you could have dealt with how the sack people felt about it and what that actually makes them, if they're human or something else. See what I mean, that would have been much more better, as you would have created an interesting backstory to these characters. In the end we just got crappy one-dimensional characters and rushed scenes. It was still a pretty enjoyable movie, it definitely looks good and it has some decent action scenes, but in the long run it's just a very disappointing movie that does not live up to its potential.
