Plot: A prequel, set in Saigon during the fall, and the weakest link in the trilogy, unacceptably restrained in both action and emotion. Chow Yun-fat plays a younger version of Mark, his original character,...( read more read more... ) a hesitant young man digging for his roots in Vietnam, which was also Tsui's birthplace, and we get to watch him assemble his totemic trappings: the duster overcoat, the French shades, the twin .45s. The surprise is that he gets most of them from a torchy dame played by Anita Mui (the seductive singing ghost from Rouge), who's a more-than-worthy high-noir love object. She can perforate miscreants with the best of them. (John Woo wrote the original script, only to be supplanted as director by his boss and supposed pal, Mr. Tsui; much of Woo's original material ended up in his later magnum opus Bullet in the Head.) --David Chute

Unless Chow Yun Fat isn't kicking someone's tail or acting like a pirate, then I don't want to seee it.

    REVIEW: Part 1, plot:
Trying to get his friend Mun (Tony Leung) and his father out of Saigon, Mark (Chow Yun-Fat) requests the help of a local crime boss, named Kit (Not the same Kit from I+II, this one is played by Anita Mui) When a South Vietnamese General tries to mess up their escape to Hong Kong, the two of them fight their way out in a terrific gun battle (the only real good part of the movie) which cements their bond, and the two soon fall in love. Mark tries to get Kit to leave Saigon with him, but she declines. Mun, his father and Mark escape to Hong Kong where they open up a business together, but the Japanese, ex-Lover of Kit, Tanaka, has other ideas...
REVIEW Part 2, Verdict: Three must be Tsui Hark's unlucky number, as both A Better Tommorow III and OUATIC III were overlong, had little to nothing to do with the other two films and had love storys that just didn't work. Had the movie been given a different title, i probably would have given it a better rating, because as bad as the movie is, the ending is kinda sad. still this movie is a dissapointment and a discrace to the A Better tommorow name.

Different to John Woo's original two films, but it's almost as good. Chow Yun Fat, gives a very charismatic performance, hilarious in the opening scenes when he walks around the airport with an unlit cigarette hanging from his lip, and gives a raw, powerful, emotional performance at the end. The action scenes although lacking the finesse of the John Woo trademark mayhem, are still high velocity and powerful. Aided well by the soaring soundtrack, this film although it can be a little slow, is a welcome and worthy addition to the better tomorrow films.

This final installment of A Better Tomorrow series isn't bad action without director John Woo from the sequels that Tsui Hark took over. Anita Mui makes a fine performance as a femme fatale and lover of Chow Yun-Fat.

This film should not use the name A Better Tomorrow III in Mandarin as well as English.

Obviously Tsui Hark is not as good as John Woo. You may feel a little bit disappointed when you watch it because the screenplay was set to be independent from the first two.

Anita Mui is very cool and the theme song is very classic too. What a waste for a great actress to die for cancer in 30th December 2003.

If there will be a IV to be made, I hope John Woo will think twice and look at the screenplay carefully.

Anyway, you will be convinced here that it is always not easy to be a good man.
