Attenborough's epic telling of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery's Operation: Market-Garden. This film is simply bursting with well-known (and some not-so-well-known) screen talent. Combine that with the best action of the pre-Saving Private Ryan era and the story itself (which needed to be told) and Germans that speak German (with some memorable appearances by von Rundstedt, Model, and Bittrich) and you get what you get: one of the best late-century WWII epics of American Cinema. EVER.
Released during the summer of 1977 and this is a great war movie with an great cast. the movie maybe to long. but you will enjoy three hours of action from world war 2 from beginning to the end. Released during the summer of that year, next to another successful movie was Star Wrs and that was movie of the year back in 1977. but still this has to be one of the best war movies of the 1970s and also one of the best movies of 1977.
Released during the summer of 1977,this film was impressive from beginning to end.but its the best three hours you will enjoy sitting with the action and rama within it. : Released during the summer of that year, next to another successful movie and it had to be movie of the year 1977 which was Star Wars. A Bridge Too Far does have a great cast and it stars Sean Connery,Michael Caine,James Caan and Anthony Hopkins. a good war movie but not the best i have seen.
Just a little lacking - certainly when compared to newer war films like Saving Private Ryan, a little poor. The story doesn't really hang together and the characters dip in and out, and altogether it's not great.
An historic telling of the failed attempt to capture several bridges to Germany in World War II in a campaign called Operation Market-Garden. a great World War 2 film. although this film was made in 1977, it is still an excellent film with great special affects. great acting by James Caan (The Godfather), Sean Connery (Dr.No) and Michael Caine( The Itallian Job). great action war scenes throughout this film. a great epic. a great storyline to this film. one of the best films of 1977 and war films of the 1970's
An overblown war film which tries to duplicate the success of such film as The Longest Day with its huge ensemble cast, but focuses on the wrong story, you can see the disappointment coming miles away.
A Bridge Too Far is seriously one of the best WWII films. The cast alone demands attention. Everybody who was anybody is in it. James Cann and Anthony Hopkins were the stand out performances for me. Gene Hackmans performance was a bit off a letdown. His accent was horrible, but not to the point were i was wincing everytime he came on screen.
The film is epic. Almost 3 hours long. And the action once it gets going thirty minutes in doesnt let up. I never found myself bored. The fights were staged magnificently. And the paratrooper air drop near the begining was incredible.
The film tells of the ambitious yet ill fated Operation Market Garden. Essential viewing for War film fans!!
Tells the story of the ill-fated Operation Market Garden. If you know your Second World War history, you know that the good guys didn't quite pull this one off. That's right - they tried to go a bridge too far. Wonderful performances all round, with Anthony Hopkins a stand out for me. Also includes Michael Caine and Gene Hackman, who are, as always, wicked. Best bit: the tree-level flyby by a Spitfire while reconnoitring the Dutch countryside.
as someone else on here said... no one shined. this was all about the reminiscing of how we really fucked this up and alot of allied soldiers died. this film was more about the action sequences than anything else and they were good action sequences. it was a history lesson as well for those that didn't know about arnhem and monty's operation market garden. if i was in that market i'd be hiding under a stall!!! not a bad action/war flick by richard attenborough. a bit short on dialogue and drama
allied forces during ww2, must take several key bridges in holland, to cripple the germans plans, we see in ngreat detail, varrious missions at diferent points in the country, which each play a key part in a bigger plan, great all star cast, robert redford, anthony hopkins, sean connery, and many others, all tail off on there various styorylines, great action war scenes, and great production value, a 70s longest day, a big view and a epic film, from director richard atenborough, one of the ww2 films that has been considered quite authentic,
One of my favourite war films... scratch that, one of my fav films ever. Based on a tragic and extremely important Operation through the Cornelius Ryan novel this all star picture is a constant and thrilling ride. Defionatly one to watch!
Was taken to see this in the pictures when it first came out and has remained one of the best big screen war films of all time and one of my favourites, I used to be told tales of the actual event by family friends who were there. Still hard to beat for authenticity.
This has some excellent, epic war action but is too long and its parts too disparate. It does, however, boast one of the most the most impressive casts in Hollywood history. $26m in 1977 was a huge budget, (2x Star Wars) and you can see most of it on the screen.
Although this movie had some great battle scenes, it was marred by poor casting. I thought the Brits and the Germans were right on the mark for their roles, but we (US) failed. With the exception of James Caan, I thought that the US actors were poorly casted and failed to make their characters convincing.
